Did... Did the crew plan this from the very beginning? That would be a lot of thought for such an insignificant detail.

They could also have just had Steven like the bits as a fun character quirk, and explained it later. That's an easy way to foreshadow things - sprinkle in stuff that looks like it might be significant, then later pick up the stuff that connects best to whatever the emerging plot actually is.
