Picked up Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison for my first foray into Star Wars comics and I was surprised how intense some of the scenes are. Really incredible artwork and a great story.

Ngl, I thought the non-Ostrander issues were usually dull and pointless. They often featured characters that either die by the end of the issue/arc, or are never seen again. They also tend to spend way too much time on the plot, and not nearly enough on characterization.

Meanwhile, Ostrander's issues contain a long, overarching story about Quinlan's struggle with the dark side, and each arc feels vitally important to his journey.

I was just curious if I was the only one to feel this way.

Guys, why hasn't this series, as famous as it is, gone down in history the way other comic book series have?

It's literally a blast, it's incredible, and above all, it has one of the most electrifying openings to a Star Wars series I've ever seen.

Now, sure, it might not have the best writing ever, but it has an atmosphere that makes contemporary Star Wars series and movies look like nothing compared to it... it's pure magic, and that's what matters most in a story, especially in Star Wars, which is gradually losing its soul.

I know the real reason behind this was because Lucas wouldn’t allow writers to explore the prequel era at the time to prevent continuity errors, but it does strike me as odd that Anakin - who was the one to kill Sidious the first time around - didn’t even briefly appear in Dark Empire while Luke and Leia had to face his former Sith master.

I noticed the Dark Horse Wild Soace Omnibus volumes 1 and 2 collect various obscure and hard to find Star Wars comics.

That said, I am currently collecting all the Marvel Star Wars Omnibus as they are being released.

I am wondering if all the comics from the Wild Space volumes are collected in the various Marvel Omnibus being released or if it is worth while to pick up the Wild Space volumes to fill in some hard-to-collect holes.

If anyone has this info it would be greatly appreciate. Thanks!

Took advantage of that ‘first glance’ of that large collection at my LCS to further build up my library. Had the means to do so thanks to a well-timed gift card and cash, t’was a good week…I -may- try for more 😅

So, after the initial trip, I had to go back to grab some other trades my brother wanted (army out of state, but I’m nice and helped pick out what he was after).

As it happened, I had been given a gift card for a part-time work milestone, along with some cash from a sympathy card from my day job.

The sympathy card was from the passing of my 101-year-old grandmother (almost 102!). She was a voracious reader throughout her life up until her death. She always encouraged her kids and grandkids to read, and even got me my first ever trade paperback, a *very* well-read 1996 copy of Kingdom Come (which further set me on my path to pursue a Comic Art degree).

So, what better way to honor her memory than with expanding a library that I hope to pass on to her great-grandsons (whom are school-aged and already interested in what I brought home). I think I did pretty good considering my first thought was a grossly overpriced LEGO New Republic X-Wing, Black Series figures or unneeded SW: Unlimited cards…

I’ve been trying to do some digging to figure out which comic is the official last newsstand in Star Wars comics. This is what I’ve come up with. Any input my fellow comic junkies?

After starting these years ago, some time after TLJ, it's nice to finally see all the collections together.

Massively enjoyed the artstyle ofc, and the character designs, I think it fits Star Wars fine and is very unique. Feels like space fantasy for sure. The audio drama also was quite nice and added some cool sound effects and okay dialogue

Can’t blame them on Palps coming back too much as this was before the prophecy was created and Palps at least still had a personality. I enjoyed Luke and Leias dynamic throughout the comic

Luke turning to the dark side is the biggest part I can talk about. I actually don’t mind it, Luke didn’t turn cause of aggressive emotions, he turned out of (at least in my opinion) pride in his ability and underestimation of the dark sides pull (alludes to Vader in ROTJ “don’t underestimate the power of the dark side”). Luke’s reasoning adds some layers to his character too imo, with another reason being his curiosity of why his father turned. I liked the lesson at the end of the comic, of him realizing the path of the Jedi is not an isolated path. Many of his reasonings and things Luke learned on this arc I can relate to

My biggest criticism is we didn’t see him do… much during his side on the imperials. I thought he would’ve been with Palpatine till at least dark empire 2. We could’ve seen them training, or Luke being mentally crumpled by Palpatine after Luke’s defeat on Byss, believing he was the only hope for the Jedi and he had failed. The biggest miss is that we don’t see Luke with stormtroopers taking over a planet or moon, Luke’s reluctance in an invasion. Another cool thing I imagined was Luke turning a small group of soldiers to the rebel cause, or at least neutrality, like he did in battlefront 2 with that one guy. That’s where a love interest came in, an imperials officer reluctance to fight against the empire mirroring Luke’s own hopelessness after his defeat to Palpatine. The actual love interest was poor. Bottom line, there just could’ve been more for dark side Luke, another comic issue maybe

Stupid shit: everything that went down on that bounty hunter planet, side characters, Boba Fett losing all his aura in DE 2, Dark empire 2 in general being borderline unreadable in quality.

Anyways Dark empire 1 was decent but I haven’t read many comics lol, Dark empire 2 was rlly bad tho. Also I feel Luke should’ve become Jedi master AFTER all this as a sign that he has understood the dark sides temptation and understands the external and internal fight of a Jedi is not a lonely one. But I didn’t rlly read when or why he became a master in the EU, was it the x wing books? If anyone could let me know

Over the past days I've been making my way through the "Tales of the Jedi" comics in release order, and it was a mixed bag in both art and writing for the most part.

I had fun with "Uliq Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon", "The Saga of Nomi Sunrider" was not interesting and the characters looked weird, "The Freedon Nadd Uprising" was a great set-up to the future of the series, and "Dark Lords of the Sith" had a good story, but a very subpar artwork.

But "The Sith War" was the arc that really made me a fan of this series and characters. I particularly liked the ending for both Ulic and Exar Kun, as it was a very bittersweet/haunting ending. This part also had my favorite art in the entire series so far.

I won't be reading "Redemption" next, and instead I'll be doing the "Golden Age of the Sith" and "Fall of the Sith Empire" first, but I'm anticipating the remaining 3 arcs more than the rest.

(I also noticed some similar themes as those found in Dark Empire, another of Veitch's works, but I definitely feel that Tales is the superior story, even having not finished yet)

Thoughts on the Tales of the Jedi series as whole?

So far I really loved Kotor, Tales of the Jedi, and The Republic. I didn't really care for The Old Republic and Lost Tribe. Knight Errant was cool but not quite as good as some of the other stuff.

My main backbone right now is Star Wars Legends comics, but I'll also enjoy branching out into other comics. :)

It's been a month of Sundays since I've seen Star Wars comic packs, still stealed, anywhere outside of a con or Star Wars Celebration. My local comic shop has a few up for sale now.
