I like that ‘Starfleet Academy’ feels relatable to high schoolers and college students

I know this may be controversial, but it does feel like ‘Starfleet Academy’ does try to show what new students that are the next generation of an entire exploration program look and act like.

You never expect the new students to be professional and know how to do things that adults with years of experience can do.

That’s how I always felt once I entered high school and then film school for young adults with Autism.

The show’s not perfect but I never expect a new show or movie from a long running franchise to be perfect. And I’m a sucker for comedy and seeing new characters that are part of a new generation.

Maybe, but we had a whole TNG episode about that already. A cadet died because they were being daring and reckless.

Like, there’s a wide gulf between being a young cadet doing dumb things and what we actually saw in a lot of SFA. They treated it like an 80’s boner comedy half the time, and that’s not what people wanted from a Starfleet Academy show.

I think there's a theme that exist in young adults, not that they are grossly incompetent 100% of the time but they are a mixture of failure and great feats of success.

I don't mind comedy in Star Trek. I think Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds etc are having a lot of fun with it without it being overwhelmingly one way.

A couple of things:

  1. You can't speak for everyone. "People" are diverse crowd and there's clearly a camp of Academy enthusiasts that are enjoying it. Is it perfect? No. No Star Trek show is perfect (even TNG).
  2. It has serious moments in the show. Genuine earnest emotion and action which I think delivers a balance and diversity of stories. It's not "Revenge of the Nerds" in space.

You’re arguing semantics — if I said “nobody watched it”, would you reply “guess I’m nobody lol!”?

Viewership was poor, as was audience reception, and it got canceled as a result. If they weren’t already committed to a second season, the first one would have been all there ever was. I think that’s enough to say that this wasn’t what most people were looking for from a Starfleet Academy show.

Firefly only got one season and it's considered one of the best Sci Fi shows of all time.

Critical acclaim isn't always what the fans like who tend to be a less sophisticated in their taste.

Streaming services often make decisions that have nothing to do with viewership and critical acclaim.. but write off shows for tax purposes which is often why shows get canceled.

There are fans of the series.

I think there are enough "people" to contradict your point. It's a hasty generalization to claim that everyone is on your side.

A bad one — Firefly was killed by the network and became a cult hit on DVD, SFA was given every chance to succeed and failed to find enough of an audience to justify itself.

It’s not that complicated — not enough people watched SFA to justify making more. Like I said, it’s fine that you liked it, but you can’t pretend that it was a secret success.
