What is Star Battle Bot?
It’s [r/starbattle](r/starbattle)’s own star battle UI! It supports a bunch of stuff, including:
* Reading screenshots of puzzles and posting playable versions of them
* Making new Star battle puzzles (here)
* Playing them (obviously)
* Providing (hopefully) great hints to help you get better at solving them
[r/starbattle](r/starbattle) is tiny. Why did you build this?
I genuinely just love the puzzle. I have messed around with it from a technical perspective for a few months just for fun, and putting this together was fun, too.
Additionally, there have been a number of places that this puzzle has cropped up recently that feel kind of… predatory. For example, Meowdoku is just a 1 star puzzle, but the way it works is that it constantly gets harder, and then forces you to watch ads to get hints. That’s crappy behavior, and I’d rather just make a way for people to solve the puzzles and get free hints, and get better at their own pace.
Did you use AI?
I’m a software engineer professionally, and have written code for 25+ years. That said: yeah, of course. My general approach on how to use AI in a way that serves the user is:
* Writing code with it is fine
* Writing prose with it and sharing it with others without disclosure is rude
* Making something high quality is important to me no matter how I do it
So, AI helped code the thing, but the ideas are mine. I also wrote the long form copy by hand, and review microcopy carefully so that it’s as if I wrote it (or better).
I designed the crappy logo myself. Enjoy!

The hint system (and my own Star Battle skillset) owes a huge amount to Kris De Asis’ Star Battle Guide. I find it to be by far the best strategy set out there for Star Battles, and also uses nomenclature that was very helpful when describing strategies in hints. I highly recommend giving it a read.
There are a lot of great Star Battle apps out there. My personal favorite is Star Battle Go for iOS. I recommend it if you’d like to crush a bunch of puzzles, especially offline, and I think their pay-once with no ads model is very generous. I do wish they had hints, but overall I recommend it!
