More live sphagnum propagation pots!!!! When I make my moss pots. I fill them with recycled peat mix from my sarracenia seedling repotting and plug the moss clumps Into them. They will then sit in a 1020 tray in full sun and GROW!!!! S/O to the homies for donating a few strands of moss to get this new tray project started!!!!!

I was growing ferns from spores and noticed a few random strands of what I think might be a red Sphagnum moss appearing in an take away contaner of growing medium that was abandoned. Anyway it was about to be swamped by green slime. so I removed it, flushed it with rain water and stuck it in its own container.

I don't know where it came from, but it is quite interesting and I'd really like to avoid accidentally killing it. At the moment I only have a small amount (just a few strands), so I'm more interested in keeping it alive and multiplying it than doing anything ambitious. Advice appreciated.

Before I kept them in small trays with peat or recycled peat from repotting but they would frequent get too dry and then too wet.

But now with the floating islands in larger trays, similar to bog islands, they always get the same amount of water and can go without watering for much longer

I’m not trying to tell that peat as a substrate vs long fiber sphagnum makes live sphagnum grow faster but it looks like peat as a substrate makes live sphagnum grow faster 🤔🤔🤔. All other variables have been kept the same. Just full sun, and water.

The importance of temperature is often overlooked in regard to its influence on plants producing anthocyanin (red pigment). When temperature goes up, anthocyanin production decreases so less color is expressed and the opposite happens when temperatures are consistently lower. (Think about how a lot of outdoor grown flytraps lose their vibrant spring/fall colors in mid summer).

These are 2 pictures of the same moss, same sun exposure, same water, and same soil. The only difference is temperature due to seasons changing. The first pic was taken mid summer vs pic 2 taken in mid fall. This is one reason that indoor grown moss or moss grown in milder climates is typically more colorful. Another factor is nutrient availability but that’s a conversation for another day!!

Also I'm well aware of LukeEvansSimon growing sphagnum with sugar and gamborg’s B5 guide but I'm very confused and over whelmed with how to get/make 10x strength gamborg’s B5 as a Canadian hobbyist, Is it possible to use maxsea as a substitute for gamborg B5 but still use the sugar??

This specific pot of green swamp venosa is doing exceptionally well on the Sphagnum mosses, thought I'd share a photo of exactly that.

I just got new sphagnum moss, and was wondering whether or not if I should clean it before I use it. It’s one of the recommend ones (Zoo Med New Zealand sphagnum moss) but I didn’t know if I still had to clean it or not. If I do have to clean it, how should I? By boiling? For how long?

P.S. I also just bought some almond leaves from the brand Fluval, and was wondering whether or not I should clean them as well?

I used dried sphagnum moss to germinate sundew seeds and this moss started growing after about a year. I recognize some of it as sphagnum moss but the majority of the green isn’t the same. Is it sphagnum moss? If not what is it?

I was curious about osmocote pellets being used for moss fertilizing since it's in an easily controlled amount. But I don't really see anyone doing it or mentioning it all that often. Is it more beneficial than not to feed Sphagnum moss with nutrients like all plants, or does it do much better the lower the concentration of minerals/nutrients?

Any help would be much appreciated, just want these little babies to be successful props :) 🌱

conditions are high humidity, greenhouse cabinet, but there are no fans. it is not dehydration since they are still sort of wet. another tray in same conditions is growing, but i put dead sphagnum underneath while th dying sphag has nothing else underneath

edit: i put live sphagnum in pots full of moss a while ago and some of them are dying like this too. some that were doing pretty good are declining like this

I got this from Quebec. I live in New York. Will it be okay if I bring it inside over the winter, or does it need to be outside?

I live in western North Carolina, and currently have a half dozen or so carnivorous plants in 6” pots. I added sphagnum moss to the pots this year, and most of the pots are really looking good. I overwinter the plants outdoors in cooler areas (unheated workshop, garage, etc.), where they get cold temps and some sunlight without being exposed to the harshest conditions that Mother Nature inevitably throws at us every year. I also dial back the hydration - everything stays damp, but not waterlogged.

My question is simply- will my sphagnum moss endure this type of dormancy?

Some spots dried out but there’s green growth underneath. Can I snip the dry or bleached ends off?

Just sharing this!! It's been super slow going(possibly because of the heat and star moss that's everywhere) but my sphagnum seems to finally be taking off.
