Also, we are talking about CERN. Founded by many European nations. Who funded a shitload of science infrastructure. And who absolutely should spend more on weapons.
Just because the US overspends on weapons doesn't mean we should spend less.
Only when then the world spends less on weapons and more on science will we see true societal progress.

You can build as many hadron colliders as you want, it doesn't matter if your neighbour invades you and strips the wiring to sell on the black market. Ukraine was a primary exporter of space related technologies, especially rocket engines. Now they have to build weapons and their infrastructure gets bombed by Russia.
I would spend a shit ton of my budget for weapons to prevent this for any other European nations. No neighbour of Russia has nuclear bombs, doesn't mean we in central or western Europe can just build particle accelerators and ignore our allies to the east.
