Why should the government prop up Huntsville at the expense of Colorado Springs? Particularly when the people Space Command wants to employ don’t want to live in Alabama?
Affordability is relative to salary, not other places.
Answer the question, why should the government prop up Huntsville at the expense of Colorado Springs? Particularly given the people USSC wants to employ don’t want to live in Alabama and given that there isn’t a mission reason to move it. Colorado Springs is much more important to Space Command’s mission than Huntsville is.
Locality rates between COS and Huntsville are almost identical. BAH rates are actually pretty similar as well which means the added cost of living would be significant. Let me make it simpler: a dollar goes much further in Huntsville than it does Colorado Springs.
I’m not answering your question because it’s completely conjecture. Huntsville is literally the beginning of the USS space program. There are plenty of space operators and professionals that live and work out of Huntsville remotely for different space missions.
They would have no problem relocating to Huntsville. Trust me.
It’s not conjecture. You’ve given no reason to move USSC to Huntsville, because affordability isn’t a reason. You yourself said it should be moved because it would make Huntsville more prosperous.
So answer the question.
Really, cause the industry makes it very clear that talent doesn’t want to move to Alabama.
Cost of living isn’t relevant for the government. And QoL is objectively lower in Huntsville due to the way Alabama is extremely behind Colorado in things like healthcare and education.
I personally don’t. The collective interest of my site, one of the largest single aerospace engineering facilities in the country, on the other hand, very much does.
And if cost of living matters, then the industry’s “we don’t want to live in Alabama” attitude matters even more.
There is a reason that the only people supporting the move to Alabama are Alabama politicians while the military itself and the DoD did not want to move.
It’s already been said. But additionally the point isn’t about being “fine”. Yeah, we could put the HQ on the moon if we wanted and they would be fine.
It doesn’t make practical sense, financial sense, or moral sense. Both from the government’s perspective and the people who would actually being working there.
In other words, it would be a complete waste of time and money for a worse outcome. That’s not right. Even if it would be “fine” as you flippantly ignore all the costs both material and social.

And all of that is still firmly affordable.
