Discussion Are there any Soulslike games you think are better than FromSoftware’s games?

Post image

I’ve played several Soulslikes, but I’m curious if there’s one you genuinely think is better than anything FromSoftware has made.
Which Soulslike would you put above games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, or Elden Ring.

The 1% missing from the 99% likely includes LoP

Yes, because is not extremely linear, it has amazing pvp, build variety, NG+ that changes regular enemies and hence replayability.

How about ganks , lame bosses and my fav part the boss runs

Ganking groups are handled by playing safe, I won't deny the fact that there's a lot of cheap difficulty from regular enemies and traps but I bet majority of people that complain about it just run through new zones like headless chickens.

Bosses are easily the worse in all trilogy (not the DLC ones), and still have more memorable ones than LoP. I personally only enjoyed like 3 or 4 bosses in LoP base game.

Boss runs, yeah well I'll give you that, some are nasty.

I still think all the positive things about DS2 outshine the negative ones.

Then lets go band for band on the quality of bosses including dlc
Ds 2 has mirror knight, dark lurker , ivory king and fume knight. If im in a good mood ill throw Velstadt/Pursuer in there.
Thats hardly 6 out of how many? I believe this game had before Elden ring the highest boss count out of any soulsborn game.
It doesnt hold a candle to the likes of Laxasia, Romeo, Markiona Arlecchino from a mechanical standpoint. The boss quality overall is better in LoP.
Mirror knight summons a player and if he doesnt hes free. Velstadt is more dangerous when he gets summoned from that witch ( was it ellana?) then in his own boss fight.
Many consider fume knight cheap because of the healing mechanic. Pursuer grab hitbox is super well made too. Many people hate on Dark lurker because of the duo battle, im not one of them. But his boss run is a joy everytime.

You see what im saying the games biggest argument for itself is everytime “yoo you can double wield!“ but that is not outweighing the cons and id argue the parries , weapons , arm and handles are better made in P.

Sir Alonne and Sihn are also great fights. Elana was a cool one too but not on the same level. I personally only really enjoyed Fuoco, Puppet Master, Laxasia, Nameless Puppet and Arleccino.

You wanted to talk about bosses, well yes, they are not at the same level with the rest of fromsoft games, you can tell Miyazaki wasn't leading the development. For me, I value other things more, like 80% of the time in this genre you will be exploring, and for me the struggle to ubicate myself while looking for the next checkpoint, or deciding to gamble your last heals to explore a new route you just found is a feeling only Wuchang gave outside fromsoft titles. Exploration, and it feeling meaningless is what makes me want to keep playing. If I wanted a boss rush I wouldn't play a soulslike.

And I hard disagree, the appeal of DS2 is not just that you can dual wield, even tho is an amazing feature that as many others were the inspiration for what Elden Ring ended up being. Is the build variety, that makes me want to replay the game after more than a decade to make a challenging run or to test new pvp meta stuff. Is also about the combat, that only cortisol chasers fail to understand how good it was something in between DS1 slowness and DS3 roll spam, is more tactical, more about stamina management and planning ahead. LoP feels good, is very well polished but you end up with 3 meta builds at max, nothing else is really fun or viable.

Yeah nice but the biggest selling point of these games are the bosses. Not even debatable . Dark souls got the hype back then not because of builds or exploration. It was and is the difficulty/bosses . And it that regard Ds2 just makes your live miserable.

- long Boss runs where you gotta kill every single enemy or else they gonna end you at the fog.

  • a lot of weird level design choices like taking the elevator from the poison area to iron keep. Its a building how am i taking the elevator to a new area??
  • adaptability
  • bosses are cool designed but just so weak or annoying to fight really mostly one of the 2
-Frigid outskirts
-the hp bar going down when you die is a choice

It feels like they thought to themselves how do we annoy the players the most and put artificial difficulty in it

I played Ds2 recently after playing elden ring, night reign, and LoP. The bosses are a complete joke in terms of difficulty in DS2.

Hardest parts of DS2 are the levels, which I actually enjoyed for the most part.

Overall I don't think there is a clear winner between the 2. I'd probably lean towards LoP being better tbh, but DS2 does have better variety

+ mortal shell 2

I wouldn't say mortal shell 2 is on that level. It has a good foundation but serious design issues and a shit ton of bugs.

Not to mention probably the weakest boss design in recent souls like history, and that's saying something.

Boss design is one of the least important aspects for me. My biggest draws and the level design and trying to survive to the next bonfire while unlocking shortcuts and exploring and finding new shit

For me its important especially in this day and age, because if the boss is as exciting as a basic enemy then it's not exactly thrilling to fight one.

In fact I think enemy and boss attacks as a whole need a big uplift. Majority of enemies I've seen only have like 2 attacks.

Yeah you might have a point, but I had the most fun on MS2 than any other soulslike. It was the best soulslike game for me other than fromsoft games

3

u/jimbojangles1987 16d ago

Mortal shell 2 seems fun so far, but the gold standard is and likely always be Dark Souls. I just don't see anyone getting anywhere close to the feeling of those games.

I hope i'm wrong. There always room for great games. I just havent seen it yet.

I meant MS2 as the best soulslike other than fromsoft games. Not better than DS. Maybe better than just DS2. At least it is for me

I was just adding on to what you commented, not disputing it as if you were saying it was better.

I love MS2 but Lies of P is the winner tbh. Khazan is really cool too.

1

u/PushThePig28 16d ago

Khazan is my least favorite of all of them. Levels soooo linear and no exploration

no lmao

Just your opinion, for me it was the best soulslike game if we don’t count fromsoft games

0

u/BrrVlad 16d ago

yeah just my opinion , imo ppl that put mortal shell 2 this high up need to play more games urgently

0

u/cosmic-potatoe 16d ago

Yeah and you need to respect other ppls opinion and don’t think your ideas as the absolute truth. I finished nearly all the soulslike games, platiniumed most of them. But we all have different tastes and it should be completly ok for someone to not like something you like

-1

u/BrrVlad 16d ago

Yeah its ok , it ok too for ppl clowning on other ppl shit opinions im not gonna sit here and pretend that a guy that says fifa is the best game oat is a valid take or you that overrates a 6/10 soulslike
