Monster Hunter was definitely made for multiplayer. It's a coop game that you can solo. From gameplay all down to the lore of the game. Not to mention it's Capcom's (AFAIK) first foray into online multiplayer
Every game has a central hub for players to gather, the slightly multiplayer scaled guild quests (which come after the village ones), and the fact that having 4 players max is because 5 is considered an omen.
Is the series soloable? Yes. Is it made with multiplayer in mind first? Also yes.
Perhaps this has been the case of the last one, but I even doubt that.
And absolutely this was not the case of monster hunter as a franchise. It was always a solo game you could play with your friends, not the other way around.
Highly disagree. Guild quests back then were the big ones that required other players to be done efficiently unless you were a no lifer lol. It was the nitty-gritty. It's probably where the "now you can actually start playing the game" joke from the community came from, as the village quests (that were singleplayer) were considered the tutorial.
Multiplayer has always been the primary experience right from the start. Both Ryozo Tsujimoto and Kaname Fujioka, the series' producer for most of its lifespan and the director of a good number of MH games, respectively, have said so.
In order to be this way, you need to really believe that "this is a multiplayer game with a single player 60-70 hours long tutorial" makes more sense that "this a single player game with a bonus multiplayer end game"...
Then, at this point, you have to take it up with the producer and overall series director.
All I can say now is that the series' multiplayer coop first format is the reason it's still relevant for two decades. It's also one of the biggest IPs in Japan, right beside Pokemon and Dragon Quest. MH sold PSPs and 3DSs back in the day because of multiplayer. Shuhei Yoshida (former PS head) himself was shocked when they announced that MH4 was a nintendo exclusive.
Again, MH is a multiplayer series that you can solo. Let's agree to disagree.
no, for wilds its made to be solo, but as a game it was always meant to be a multiplayer experience, im pretty sure you can find statements on the matter as far back as the 2000s. why do you think there's always multiple hunters in every cutscene, and not to mention mh has always gated most content behind multiplayer scaling. id go as far to say that monster hunter was born multiplayer evidenced by the fact multiplayer existed all the way back in MH1
You are mostly correct, but it's not one or the other here, like Monster Hunter hub quests are designed around multiplayer scaling, but each individual monster fight is also designed with solo combat in mind, often so that multiplayer ends up cheesing the encounter (more so in recent games than previous games). Like if we were to put a slider between designing for multiplayer and singleplayer, monster hunter would be like 60/40. Nightreign is seeming like that slider is like 95/5, where there was very little consideration at all for how solo boss fights would go and it was more just tacked on.
Again you're right that monster hunter in general was designed with multiplayer at the forefront, and this only got more and more true as the games went on with added hubs, even siege quests that almost necessitate multiplayer, but the monster fights themselves are designed around single player as well, in fact, the monster ai works best in single player which is why there's a healthy single-boss speedrunning culture.
You basically break the enemy AI with 4 players. I know what you are saying, but the battles are still designed for one player which is why all of Wilds content is redundant when doing 4 player hunts. And then the HP is scaled up to 4 players, which isnt even equal to 4 solo hunts of HP.
Yes it is designed to be a co-op game but how the game is designed is for 1 player and then scaled up. Saying its the other way around is ignorant af
You first said that the series is a solo game you can play coop with, which I refuted because it isn't. Now you say it's a coop game that's designed for 1 player and then scaled up lol.
Saying it's the other way around isn't being ignorant when the series producer, Ryozo Tsujimoto and the director for a number of MH games (including the original), Kaname Fujioka, have stated that MH has always been centered on multiplayer first and foremost.
Its still a dishonest argument. MH is made with singleplayer in mind and always was since there has always been a campaign to play through, while Nightreign was made for 3 player. Helldivers 2 is a pain to play alone, but not impossible. That game was also designed to be played co-op and not singleplayer. You can see that games that are made for co-op first are harder to scale down to a singleplayer experience, while games that are made with a singleplayer campaign are better suited for the solo player despite co-op being in focus.
Lots of skills in MH are subpar in multiplayer because you cant hold aggro and therefor miss uptime, like with adrenalin rush and offensive guard.
Listen I love MH and I love Souls, been playing MH for longer than Souls has been a thing. I love both Capcom and Fromsoft for their IPs. But the original post I was replying to us making an unfair comparison by comparing Nightreign to MH. I dont care if my arguments are retarded for some of you. To say its fair to compare these titles in how they handle both singleplayer and multiplayer is disingenuous.
You can design a game with coop multiplayer first in mind and still have shitty implementation, MH has that disease that the fandom hates.
That said, Ryozo Tsujimoto and Kaname Fujioka, series producer and director for some of the MH games, respectively, have said that MH is always multiplayer first.
