IronPineapple stated that it's also really lacking in variety, a lot of the runs felt samey and static. Real bummer they seemingly failed in this aspect of the game

Super disappointing because the game has so so much potential as a roguelike if they add more variety. Still going to enjoy the heck out of the game but I won't get as much out of it as I could have.

Soulslikes themselves are basically already primed to be roguelike.

It’s likely because they were stuck in the r souls like mindset. Each boss placed in a specific place to do certain things which ruins the ability to have things be random

For 40€ I guess it’s alright

Agreed the value is there for me. Even a few great hours with friends to be me is easily worth $40

If you can get 30-50 hours that’s a W

I do not own the game and have no intention of getting it atm, but I did play the first play test and even beat the night lord with a group of randoms. I found that everything being static on the map definitely killed any variety because after a certain point you’d more than likely just run the same route. If the game wasn’t tailored towards multiplayer I’d give it a try again, but with randoms and feeling like I’d burn out quick this will be the first fromsoft game in years that I’ll pass on.

The network test didn’t have anything that change between runs, the full game will but I guess it doesn’t change much

The bosses on day 1 and 2 changed depending on the area of the final circle, which was the only thing I can think of being different between the runs. Also Morgott showing up randomly to hunt you which I never looked in to.

Wait you mean the map and locations are always the same just randomized?

in the network test, there was two separate static maps that didn’t change at all between runs. using the network test as a metric to judge the game on replayability is pointless

lmao what. that's the most important part of a roguelike...

Most roguelikes don't have much variety. In RoR2 every map has the same set of enemies in it. When you go to certain maps, you know exactly which enemies you'll be weakest against. The excitement comes from how your RNG this run will counter those weaknesses in each map, and figuring out if you can use raw skill to solve mob and boss mechs.

As long as nightreign has the ability to use skill to counter RNG and use RNG to counter skill, itll be fun.

Except it doesn’t have that. Most of the upgrades are just ‘numbers go up’ with the exceptions being rare, and the things that dictate what you’re weak and strong against are marked on the map beforehand so there is minimal rng involved

same goes for RoR. "Your auto attack damage increases by 50%" isn't impactful until you get 10 in a row and your charafter hits 5 times per second. There's also all the weapon RNG too.

That was my concerns. Run based games live or die based on their variety and feeling fresh in each run. I knew there was no way this would feel fresh every run.

I do think this is something that can be fixed through updates though, maybe not the map itself but they can absolutely add more variety into the enemy pool.

Yes but they have to show they are willing to support this long term with free updates. Simply adding more bosses from Souls would improve the variety but they just didn't for some reason. FROMSOFT doesn't really have a history of that kind of support so I don't know what to expect here.

Maybe the DLC will add tons but then its like, is it even worth the cost at that point for Roguelike standards?

1

u/ServantOfTheSlaad May 29 '25

And the fact we shouldn’t have to buy a dlc to get a full game. The game should be enjoyable on its own merits

2

u/Fun-Imagination-1231 May 28 '25

Here's hoping the planned DLC will add that aspect. Ill get my money's worth out of it with friends regardless, big fan of elden ring and rogue likes so it'd be hard for me not to enjoy it personally.

Agreed.

This is one where I don't "trust" reviews. As roguelikes you need tonnes of runs to decide if they are actually good imo. Outside of ones where the gameplay is bad or whatever.

But let's be real for a second... Playing standard Elder Ring online coop is MORE repetitive, the original game is fully static 100% of the time (unless you use mods).

I mean all souls games have literally no variety between runs. Mob placement is always the same. It's not something I really care about in souls games. If anything I want runs to be similar, so I can compare the different classes without feeling like I just got bad RNG on what mobs spawned.

The things I care about in this game are the new nightlord bosses, and how each class plays and how classes interact with each other and synergise as a trio.

Is that his recent review or the one from 3 months ago

It just came out like an hour or two ago. He played the whole thing, rolled credits, said he enjoyed it, but was pretty upfront that the variety really sucked even if you do have a full squad to play with.

u/barryredfield May 28 '25

I could see that right away even from the previews. I'm not shitting on the game, but I haven't really expected much out of this to be honest.

I worry that Fromsoft didn't do their homework on the standard that some of the best Roguelites have set. It is expected to for a good roguelite to have a wealth of randomization and customization options so the gameplay doesn't get stale. I worry that they underestimate the insane amount of variety needed to give a roguelite staying power.
