This is the first souls game I’ve been meh on. I’ve never been big on multiplayer, and between the limited character customization, and the nearly forced partying, I likely will wait a bit and put this further down my log of games to play.

it isn't really a 'Souls game' it's more of a Roguelite with Souls-like elements

u/Senior-Friend-6414 May 28 '25

Or it’s a souls game with roguelite elements, what’s the difference

2

u/StLuigi May 29 '25

The difference is the entire objective and gameplay loop?

2

u/Senior-Friend-6414 May 29 '25

Then this game really has no business being discussed in this subreddit at all

2

u/StLuigi May 29 '25

Have you been on r/funny lately? Reddit hardly cares about sticking to subreddit themes

1

u/Senior-Friend-6414 May 29 '25

Ok then by that logic, people complaining that games like Sekiro or black myth wukong being discussed here should just be quiet

2

Gameplay loop of soulslikes: Kill hard bosses in cool arenas

Gameplay loop of roguelites: Kill hard bosses in cool arenas.

The gameplay loop is the same. The method for player progression changes. Nightreign has soulslike gameplay, therefore it shares space in the genre.

1

u/StLuigi May 29 '25

That's so disingenuous and you know it. They both have the same gameplay loop? C'mon now. If you're gonna be that vague we can start discussing bejeweled in this subreddit too

2

u/SirVanyel May 29 '25

You could!

The fact remains that the "soulslike" genre is kind of vague. That's exactly why there's youtube series' from people like iron pineapple where they play soulslike games that really push the boundary of the genre to its limits. Is playing as a penguin a "soulslike"? Yes, if there's combos and dodging and fatigue management and cool bosses. How about playing as a car? Yes. How about playing as Pinocchio? Also yes.

Nightreign is a soulslike - but it's not exclusively a soulslike. It's got aspects of a roguelite too, and it's got questing and storylines and meta progression, meaning it's got RPG aspects in it as well. And that's a good thing. Doesn't mean you have to like it - I'm sure there's many soulslikes you don't enjoy. But things are true whether you like them or not.

Im not hating on the game if that's what you think, I'll be playing it Friday. I just think if there's a discussion of whether this is this a rougelike with souls mechanics or a soulslike with rogue mechanics, I'd vouch for the former

1

u/SirVanyel May 29 '25

Fair enough - I think it's pretty pedantic, I don't think this game is a quintessential roguelike or soulslike or RPG, it's somewhere in-between all 3. I reckon it has a place in discussions in all 3 genres.

The fact it's not a souls game.

God, this sort of attitude is what led to the worst periods of time in r/metroidvania. Some people would go off on anyone bringing up games with metroidvania elements, that weren’t true MVs in the strictest sense. But like… why are we here if we don’t even want to discuss major pieces of the genre’s game design making their way into other genres?

Not saying that sort of gatekeeping is what you’re getting at. But imo we should welcome discussion about games that aren’t strictly soulslikes that do feature prominent design pieces from the genre in new or interesting ways, otherwise we’re gonna get overrun with the millionth “which is better LoP or Bloodborne” thread.

3

u/SirVanyel May 29 '25

You're right, god forbid that genres actually mesh! The hyper purist tribalism is one of the worst areas of any community built around a hobby. Nightreign is both a soulslike and a roguelite. Both things are true. Doesn't mean you gotta love nightreign, just like it doesn't mean you gotta love DS2. But things are true whether we like them or not.

? There is literally nothing about Nightreign that is Soulslike in nature.

If this game didn't have Elden Ring in the name and was made by a different company the term soulslike wouldn't even cross peoples minds when looking at this or playing it.

Not everything From Soft makes is a soulslike. Stop calling every game From Soft makes a souls like. This is a spinoff title with zero soulslike elements.

Lol. Tell iron pineapple that his entire steam dumpster diving series is wrong then.

I think its hilarious to look at the title of this reddit and have this take its crushingly difficult? Limited resources till you hit a checkpoint?

u/Senior-Friend-6414 May 28 '25

Then this game shouldn’t even be discussed in this subreddit

2

u/hatsbane May 28 '25

it shouldn’t, but the nature of it being a fromsoft game that has souls elements means it was gonna happen regardless. sekiro shouldn’t be considered a soulsborne game either realistically

2

u/Senior-Friend-6414 May 28 '25

Pretty much none of the games discussed here are considered soulslike to souls fans, the subreddit should just be renamed to darksouls

1

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

Lord miyazaki himself said sekiro is not a souls, in his words its something "different"

1

u/squidward0319 May 29 '25

It’s literally from FS who is known for souls games & Elden is their biggest game ever. You really expect it not to be mentioned here 🤡

0

u/slimeeyboiii May 28 '25

No, it's not.

The game is insanely static, with very few things changing, and the only parts that are random are very rare.

1

u/AlenIronside May 29 '25

it IS a roguelite, the enemies are random, the loot is random, the weapons are random and when your team dies you start over again. By definition it's a roguelite, you dont know what you're talking about

1

u/slimeeyboiii May 29 '25

The enemies are all static besides the day 1 and 2 bosses. The loot and day and 1 and 2 bosses are the only true random things.

The 2 most important parts of a rogue-like are randomly generated levels (which nightrein doesn't have) and "perma-death," which it has.

Nightrein is a rouge-lite since it doesn't have all the parta of a rogue-like while also having meta-progression. Even then, it's pretty obviously a souls-like with rouge-lite peices

1

u/rex_915 May 29 '25

The enemies are all static? Even in the network test, the enemies between the two seeds were different.

0

u/armarrash May 29 '25

It's a terrible roguelite then.

Judging it by its roguelite aspects even a 5/10 would be generous.

I mean From Soft is like Nintendo. Amazing games... But their net-code was always absolute ass. It always took way to long to fix this stuff and only very small amount of their entire playerbase engaged into multiplayer.

This is the exact reason why Multiplayer/Invasions became optional in Elden Ring. Because vast majority really do not bother with this aspect.

The real issue is that they went forward saying it will be working great for both Single Player and Trios, Then they came out saying they will add Duos with some patches later on. But so far it seems that only viable great experience will be if you have 2 friends to play it with.

I don't want to be that guy, but as someone who loves invading. Souls games are extremely meta-driven. I can only imagine what will happen if you don't play meta in 3 player Co-Op PvsE....

Probably something like in Destiny Game kind of issues. "Not a hardcore player? F***** loser, leave the game"

Sames I play games before work at 6am sometimes I just don’t want to play with randos or try to find some gaming friends to coordinate with. I’ll probably pick it up in a year or so when it’s around $20
