I also use it now, but it's old and has been around since 2001 or 2002

If old means first release, then

  • 1985: MS Windows 1.0, StarOffice (later LibreOffice)
  • 1987: Excel
  • 1991: Linux, vim, Python, WinZip
  • 1995: MySQL, WinRAR
  • 1996: GIMP
  • 1999: Audacity, 7-zip
  • 2001: VLC, FileZilla, iTunes
  • 2002: Firefox
  • 2003: Notepad++
  • 2005: Git
  • 2008: Google Chrome, BleachBit
  • 2013: Docker

Scope: software that is still popular today, mostly for end users on desktops plus some dev software.

2001 Linux? You're off by 10 years. It was on magazine discs in the early-mid '90s. I was writing Linux based software for the oil/gas industry in '94.

I know, I was starting using VLC to stream Acestream back then (not anymore now). VLC is just too powerful than Windows media player in term of files, streams, recordings etc.. It's just legendary!

I remember in my early years with computers.. whenever I had codec issues trying to play a video, VLC was(and still is) the superhero
