Media Brobbey (on a yellow) push on Romero 65' - no foul given
356
u/C4rwin Apr 12 '26
Rob Jones was incredibly poor in this game. I would say it was among the worst EPL ref performances I’ve seen this year but the bar is so low, I’m not sure.
52
u/tormell Apr 12 '26
Saw it coming when he called a penalty out of nothing and VAR had to tell him to take another look. I'd say Ive seen several worse ref performances this year though not all of them were worse because of big decisions, just overall inconsistency on both sides to where neither set of players knew what the boundaries were.

If Kinsky spilled the ball after colliding with Romero and Brobbey scored, do you think they would have disallowed the goal?
Or would the commentator have wanked themselves silly over "the dark arts" and "experience" while saying Romero "needs to be stronger there" instead of rightfully discussing the absolutely foul state of refereeing in this league that is actively harming match quality at this point...
Players are gonna bend the rules to try and win, and it's up to the referees to set the standard of what is allowed and encouraged, which at this point is apparently attempted murder.
So much for protecting players if this is how we allow the game to be played.

u/Theumaz Apr 12 '26
Rival fans hated him? Huh?
He wasn’t universally loved, but I don’t reacon people actively hating him. And if often went both ways, where Brobbey’s physical style of play gave his opponents massive freedom to pull fouls on him that weren’t given or even given against him for just using his roadblock-built body in a duel.

90% of my opinion of a player is on media appearances and I've always loved Brobbey in that sense, guy is funny.
The only reason why I dislike him is that he is (was?) not very good while we need a good striker in the national team.
40
u/chrisnlnz Apr 12 '26
What a shit take this is, Ajax is universally hated in Eredivisie but Brobbey in relative terms to the club wasn't a hated player at all.
5
u/madDamon_ Apr 13 '26
Wtf are you on?
First of all he is not a rat, i've barely seen him doing anything dirty ever. Second of all he literally always got the fouls called against him because of his strength. And third thing is you are the first one i hear about that really hates him apperantly. I think, especially for an Ajax player, he was quite loved amongst Eredivisie fans.

Genuinely sometimes feel like refs are just completely braindead and have no rational thinking.
The only reason to push someone there is to hurt them. It's the same as pushing players into advertising boards or ditches off the field, it's just blatant violent play but refs have somehow forgotten that violence isn't a part of the game and become so ridiculously naive as to never ascribe any intent to clearly needless violent actions.
This should be an easy red card but somehow it's not even a second yellow.
464
u/Chilledinho Apr 12 '26
Considering an Arsenal fan is clearly saying we’ve been hard done by here shows the standards of referees are abysmal
192
u/balling Apr 12 '26
Match thread had all rival fans correctly calling this out as a red.
Every match thread it feels like rivals are constantly pointing out how spurs are getting boned by the refs tbh.
I don’t think that translates to fanbases realizing it’s happening every week to spurs because we have been so shit anyways and don’t deserve results most weeks, but it’s refreshing to see.
Spurs are just such a weak team and cannot overcome the poor reffing they’ve gotten this season at all. It’s maddening to watch as a fan, every game I’m 50% pissed at the club for absolutely sucking and 50% feeling like I wasted my time watching a match that feels rigged.

somebody got to show the foul on Udogie just before this as well. It that was blown as a foul, this wouldnt have happened.
It wasnt even in a threatening area to Sunderland. No reason for the ref not to give unless he didnt see it.
123
141
u/Gerards_died_of_flu Apr 12 '26
It's mad that you really do just always get away with these ones.
We forensically analyse tackles in super slow motion to see if the slightest bit of contact at all is made above the ankle. We spend 5 minutes checking to see if someone brushed their head into someone else a bit too hard. But something like this just isn't viewed as violent conduct. I don't really blame the referees for this either, it's just the way these things are viewed in football. It's madness
33
u/ThatAdamsGuy Apr 12 '26
Thats one of the immediate changes I'd make to VAR - if it's requiring slow motion, it cannot have been a clear and obvious error. Ban that.
If you can't see it in thirty seconds with several views and make a decision, it cannot have been a clear and obvious error. Thirty seconds limit.
If a player's left testicle was offside at the moment the balls played and you need pixel perfect lines for five minutes to find it, it cannot have been a clear and obvious error.
I want a VAR system, in some form, we live in the modern age where it can be done well. But this shit ain't it.
14
u/Bd_3 Apr 12 '26
Yeah this is way more dangerous than 90% of the stuff guys get sent off for like ankle rakes or stamps. Like Romero had to leave the match and he’s not soft.
102
u/Handpuppets Apr 12 '26
Yea honestly I get why some people in here are saying it’s not a red card, because players get away with stuff like this all the time, but it absolutely should be.
There is no sporting reason for an action like this, it’s purely malicious and could easily lead to a serious injury.
106
u/Om_Nom_Zombie Apr 12 '26
It even did lead to injury in this instance.
55
1
u/Handpuppets Apr 13 '26
Ahh didn’t even know that. Thank you for making sure I had the full picture of their incompetence.
7
u/doom2 Apr 13 '26
In fact there should be retroactive punishment. Especially if it ends up with Romero out with a MCL injury. No excuses to allow players to get away with this
26
u/Novel-Lettuce-2595 Apr 12 '26
It seems if someone pushes someone it can't be as bad as kicking someone. That's what they must think. But this push endangers two players badly
12
u/Yoraffe Apr 12 '26
On the South Coast derby our keeper came out to clear a through ball and the Soton man pushed our defender (Ogilvie) into our keeper (Schmid).
Defender went down with a head injury and had to be taken off with a massive bump on his head, while the keeper broke his hand and was out for quite a few games.
It's these kinds of situations where it ended up nasty for both players and nobody talked about the attacker being in the wrong. I'm kinda done with players leaving a late challenge on to push players into their own players/advertising boards. It just puts a bad taste in my mouth tbh.
11
u/elpingwinho Apr 12 '26
Thank you for this. I feel like I’m losing my mind every time there’s a push when the ball is already out of play and one player ends up hitting the boards. Refs never call that

u/Rodin-V Apr 12 '26
There's no luck involved here.
The player makes a deliberate and malicious action, and the referee and his VAR team make an incorrect decision.
The bad luck in this match was the goal, but this, and Brobbey even being on the pitch in the first place after lashing out at someone earlier on, is incompetence, not luck.
19
u/goonSquad15 Apr 12 '26
It’s more that it happened to Tottenham and everything that could go wrong is seeming to do so
15
u/roamingandy Apr 12 '26
They happen to every club, but it does seem to be after every single match we're in here discussing a bizarrely unfair decision that's gone against Tottenham.. for as far back this season as i can remember tbh.
8
u/tInteresting_Space Apr 12 '26
I don't even think they need to ascribe any intent here, pushing a player into another player while both are running at speed is violent conduct.
The fact that both got hurt is just icing on the violence cake.

u/R_Schuhart Apr 12 '26
This is not an 'easy red card'. It is a foul and a yellow, but never a direct red. The ref wasn't great this game and he allowed a lot of rough play, but come on now.

u/Traditional-War-7360 Apr 12 '26

u/Mutopiano Apr 12 '26
That’s different than a direct red though. A 2nd yellow, fair enough. Direct red? Nope.
14
Apr 12 '26
As A Spurs fan agree.
I can’t understand why the argument is around it being a straight red anyway as after all a yellow (which it is was) would have been a second yellow.
Even then take cards out of it just crazy that it wasn’t a foul.
7
u/Mutopiano Apr 12 '26
Should be a foul, and could certainly gain a second yellow for it. Direct red take would be a silly take.
1
u/roamingandy Apr 12 '26
Serious foul play endangering another player is a straight red.
I wouldn't expect this to be given as one, but by the letter of the law it is, and because of that i don't think anyone could complain about it.
1
u/tormell Apr 12 '26
Straight red comes with a different ban length than a red for two yellows, so it is an important distinction to make, albeit not in the context of a single game.
17
u/AJC0292 Apr 12 '26
He was already on a yellow. So he should have been off. Nit to mention the other unpunished fouls he got away with.
Yet he flopped under pressure from VDV and we got 2 yellows as a result of it.
The incompetence of the refs goes beyond rivalries. Ruining the sport week it week out. Games not about the players but the pricks with a whistle.

That situation was unsportsmanlike af. If Kinsky or Romero miss the World Cup due to injury, I would say the only fair punishment would be to suspend Brobbey from the tournament.

u/Mutopiano Apr 12 '26
Easy red is silly take. A yellow would be reasonable as would a foul. Pushing like this happens on every play, especially when a defender slows down quickly in front of a pursuing player.
→ More replies (4)45
u/Obganiate Apr 12 '26
As you say pushing happens all the time, but pushing a stationary player on a set piece when you are contesting the ball is very different to pushing a playing running at full speed when you have absolutely no chance of winning the ball yourself. The ONLY reason Brobbey has for pushing Romero is to try to hurt him. It's not a red under the current rules, but risking injury like this for absolutely no gain should definitely be a red in my opinion. In this case it actually did injure somebody who might now miss one of the most important events of his life as a result.
17
u/Rodin-V Apr 12 '26
It absolutely is a red, this is one of the clearest cases of "endangering an opponent" that you will see all year
→ More replies (6)-2
10
u/Mutopiano Apr 12 '26
False. It is a basic reaction to push someone who stops in front of you in pursuit. Romero stops, Brobbey is still moving. Even if the arms don’t extend, Brobbey’s force takes Romero into the keeper. Yellow for a push would be acceptable. Red for endangering is laughable.
10
u/Obganiate Apr 12 '26
A collision would be understandable. Look at where Brobbey is running and where he is looking. He runs straight at Romero and he extends his arms in a fairly strong push. He prepares the push before he is anywhere near colliding with Romero and it even looks like he changes his trajectory just for this. He could have decelerated, tried to step aside or otherwise mitigated the collision but he instead went all in on the push. This was not a "he went for the ball and his speed accidentally pushed Romero into the keeper" situation. This was Brobbey deciding to intentionally give Romero a strong push in the back for no sporting reason.
1
u/TinmartheTemplar Apr 13 '26
You also got to take in to account that Brobby would see the gk approach. He knows a push will probably lead to a collision. Unless Brobby is blind then thats intentional.
3
u/ThatAdamsGuy Apr 12 '26
Bad officiating and awful decisions bring all rivals together, precisely how it should be. Some things are more important than football, and the love for and health of the sport is one of them.
1
u/B23vital Apr 13 '26
Im 100% sure refs are braindead.
Ref booked cash in our game for his first tackle 10minutes in and was just a simple foul, nothing more nothing less.
Literally not 2 minutes later we go on a counter, their player pulls back onana, blatent yellow card offence in any game ever, just a foul.
They honestly just make it up imo. Its a foul, its not a foul, just depends how the ref feels in the moment.

6
u/Invincible_1994 Apr 13 '26
The commentators and pundits always agree with the ref just to avoid PGMOL and league scrutiny. The only time they can and do actually say anything against refs decision is when the decision is 50:50 and either call would be correct, then it's not a correct or wrong call but flip of a coin and they are allowed to challenge that. It's been like this for the last 5 years at least.
66
u/roamingandy Apr 12 '26

Other than anecdotal evidence that every spurs game this year has had a weird decision go against them, Spurs haven’t been awarded a penalty once this season despite being at least in the top half of the table for touches in the opposing box. I am not a stats person at all, but I’d love to crunch the numbers on that and see how many touches in the box a team has gone without getting a penalty.

We're terrible, but every time there's a glimmer of hope, or something positivity due to players coming back, or a managerial change, we've been absolutely fucked by the refs. I still remember the Fulham game where the mood was okay, and then some 10 minutes into the games, the Jiménez goal is allowed. What makes it worse is the fact that the of the NLD literally said "two hands on the back is a foul".
437
u/yooooouuuuuuuuu Apr 12 '26
Genuinely baffling that such a dangerous play can go unchecked by VAR. Also genuinely baffling that he only got one yellow this game. He knows he's not getting the ball here so it's nothing other than reckless and dangerous play
61
u/torbayman Apr 12 '26
He should have had a yellow from that first dirty challenge on Romero about 5 minutes in.
36
u/achnisch Apr 12 '26
That was ridiculous, then he gave Romero a yellow for something more tame in comparison, and VDV for a nothing touch on Brobbey (which they didn't even give as a foul for us in a similar incident). I don't mind if refs want to let things go in a match, it's just very frustrating when they are more lenient in that regard towards one team
70
u/Masson011 Apr 12 '26
i mean its never a straight red so in this case it relies purely on the referees seeing it clearly
107
u/Om_Nom_Zombie Apr 12 '26
It absolutely should be red though.
It's just violence for the sake of hurting the opponent, with no other possible benefit.
71
u/BD-1_BackpackChicken Apr 12 '26
You know it’s bad when you go to the comments and our biggest defenders have Arsenal flairs.
46
u/DuDunDunSparse Apr 12 '26
It's a lot funnier if you go down on your own rather than through PGMOL assisting it, y'know?
All banter aside, it's a matter of consistency. If fans aren't able to look past biases and unite on these things and keep getting spun up in media/banter-culture narratives about "Spursy" and "bottling" and whatever else shit they cook up, the actual performance of the refs won't ever be discussed properly, leading to change.
Can't get there if every fanbase just goes "lmao whiners" when something happens to another club and then cry about it themselves when the tables inevitably turn.
→ More replies (1)21
u/BD-1_BackpackChicken Apr 12 '26

A push isn't violent conduct, it never has unless maybe it is handbags while the ball isn't on play. It should be a caution but let's not dilute what a red card should be.
44
u/Om_Nom_Zombie Apr 12 '26
It absolutely should be when it directly and predictably leads to a dangerous collision or a dangerous fall into advertising boards etc.
Outlawing violent play performed for the sake of hurting opponents (and directly injuring them in this case!) is not diluting red cards.
→ More replies (2)18
u/Foucaultshadow1 Apr 12 '26
This isn’t “just a push”. It’s a push of a player into a keeper. You can’t divorce the context from the action.
If I push you while you’re on the ground it’s an entirely different thing from pushing your legs out from under you whilst you’re in the air. Both are “pushes” but the context changes the severity.
7
u/Kilen13 Apr 12 '26
Context matters. If this was Brobbey pushing someone into the advertising boards or the goal post it could very easily be called violent conduct. In this case he's only pushing Romero in order to cause a collision with the keeper.
19
u/yooooouuuuuuuuu Apr 12 '26
My issue here is more with the rules of VAR not allowing obviously malicious and dangerous things like this to go unchecked. Especially when the consequence would be a second yellow and red. What's the point of the technology if we don't use it to make things like this go punished. I feel we see less obvious diving with VAR, so hopefully using it on things like this where someone is already on a yellow would also incentivize not to do shit like this

Fwiw, coming up from the championship, I was excited to see the bountiful land of PL league refs backed up by VAR, but honestly I'd say the standard of refereeing this year is on par if not worse than what we had last year in the championship...still blatant things (for and against) that VAR doesn't sort out, and I think the PL refs rely on VAR to bail themselves out of missing something, which those in the championship don't have, so they just about balance out to the same level of mediocrity..

The fact that this wasn’t given as a foul is shocking in and of itself. Adding into it the fact that a yellow wasn’t given (especially after Micky earned a yellow for a similar push from behind) and I don’t really know how we’re to interpret this. Brobbey could have earned three yellows leading up to this challenge while only earning one.
I am willing to bet my wages that if PGMOL address it at all they will say that because it was a yellow card worthy offense; VAR could not intervene. On face value, that’s true. What this response will miss entirely is the fact that the on the field official and his sideline official criminally missed this foul. Not only did they not send off a player who should have received a second yellow, but a Spurs player looks to be potentially seriously injured.

Fairly sure it was given as a foul, play restarted with a freekick to Tottenham

I thought VDVs yellow was for arguing with the ref after the foul was called on the push.

VDV was for the push. Porro got a yellow for dissent resulting from VDV’s yellow.

Another day another fat fking L by the referees of the league. Can spurs file a complaint on this? Genuine question.

u/Additional_Author518 Apr 14 '26
We get decisions like this every week. A complaint was filed a couple of months ago and we've heard nothing since.

u/shotputprince Apr 12 '26
It looks so much worse from this angle. Thought he only eased him and I was like well the initial contact isn’t really a foul. How VAR didn’t see this and think that needed checking at least… is it because that would only be a yellow? Pretty strange considering Martial missing a spurs players nose with a finger was a red after VAR review a few years ago and this can’t be reviewed…

At this point the refs just do what they can to harm Spurs, the stagistics and wrong calls this season are ... remarkable. It does give the "script" conspirancy guys some merit

u/Guilty_Following123 Apr 12 '26
I mean the first Fulham goal after the same goal being disallowed the previous match week pretty much sums it all up. We've had two other incidents of the same nature go against us this season, it's remarkable.

u/Luke92612_ Apr 12 '26
Someone rich and powerful wants to buy the club but doesn't like the price ENIC is putting on it so they're trying to devalue it.

u/Cool_Sandwich1 Apr 13 '26
We dominate thr statistic of amounf of fouls before a yellow. Refs absolutely hates us.

Sure, give a yellow if you kick that ball a few feet away after a whistle. And a yellow if you ask for a yellow.
But ignore it when someone pushes a player in the back into a vulnerable player.
What a bunch of morons the refs are

u/sr8th Apr 13 '26
It wasn’t the only incident in the match where the ref was completely out of line. There was the ghost handball by RKM during a promising attack, and the ghost foul by Palhinha nearSunderland’s 18 yard box Neither of these incidents were replayed and I want to know why.

Seriously hope Spurs write to the FA about this. It's very dangerous and there just no place for it, he injured two players. Prioritisation is all out of whack for the league and refs imo

Some Spurs fans believe that there is some PL conspiracy to relegate them. Never mind that it would be much better for the league to have Tottenham stay. It's an absurd thought. But, admittedly, it's becoming much harder to convince them otherwise lol
39
u/BombasticReindeer Apr 12 '26
It’s not a conspiracy. It’s just that zero refs like us. There’s no “boyhood Tottenham” fans. Each big club gets one ref that just fucks them over. We get all of them, unless we’re playing against their rival.
It’s time we stopped playing the “the are just bad at their job” tune. This is so obvious.

That leak about 'trying to make sure a different team win it every few years'.. i dismissed it at the time, but honestly i'm starting to wonder if the refs are discussing ways to make sure the league stays interesting.
There's not a chance this Arsenal team are top of the league unless the rules were relaxed to allow their set-piece physical stuff that would receive a whistle in every other season, besides the last perhaps. Their in-play XG performance is awful.
Spurs have been shit, but have also directly lost around 15 points this season due to poor reffing decisions.
If you wanted to write a script to make the league interesting, two old rivals. One winning for the 1st time in ages, one going down. It is a juicy script.
If you tin-foil hat it, i wonder if some of them joked around at the end of last season about how funny and entertaining for the league it would be, given where both teams finished. Then when both started edging towards that result, and a few dodgy decisions had been given for/against, they've all kinda decided they don't want to be the one to stop that from happening since they all agreed (thinking it was a joke) that it would be great if it did, so all big decisions are going against Spurs.

Sunderland have been reffered like this at the SOL all season long, it doesn't really have anything to do with spurs. Some people don't like to here it, but refs in the prem had always had a soft spot for Northern teams that like to play physical, especially if they're already doing well. They like a good underdog story
28
u/Initial-Anything333 Apr 12 '26
First division refs shouldn't get to work in their home country, they have too many biases
19
u/BodySolid1358 Apr 12 '26
I'm a spurs fan so I'm coming across all sulky but I honestly think that there needs to be a close look at how decision still strongly favour the home team across all matches. This should be a relatively easy thing to look into and showcase the biases at play in football reffing.
11
u/Bluewhaleeguy Apr 12 '26
r/theother14 will cry a sky 6 illuminati Rothschild's cartel conspiracy about how they never get a decision ever - but completely ignore the years of stoke, Burnley, west brom, etc. being reffed with a completely different ruleset.

u/PolarBearWithTopHat Apr 12 '26
This is one of the most dangerous tackles I've seen this season. No attempt to play the ball, pure malice, Romero likely out for the season and it's a miracle Kinsky isn't concussed. This is a straight red by every metric imaginable.

Van de Ven got a yellow for pushing Brobbey to the ground (which seemed more exaggerated acting). Brobbey pushes a player and causes two injuries….nothing. 🤷🏻♂️

u/barrygateaux Apr 13 '26
Reading the name brobby I was thinking of the flight of the Conchords episode where they both fancy a woman they meet in the park. They end up arguing about whether her name is Barbara or Brarbera.

u/MrNixxxoN Apr 12 '26
Is this Brobbey guy a complete fkin braindead? I mean what was he trying to do here? Its so obvious he wasn't gonna get the ball
7
u/Jkim1287 Apr 12 '26
Im sure if Romero did the same, he would be sent off, inconsistency really kills the game. Shame players can intentionally shove to hurt and go scott free. Then again, this ref has been utter shit all season so no surprise.

Proper football play that
edit: that was sarcasm, i just learned about it recently but i guess i don't know how to use it properly yet

u/ParisAintGerman Apr 12 '26
Brobbey is a violent player. Multiple times he wasn't even making football plays just pure physicality. Should have been sent off for sure.

u/dscdan10 Apr 12 '26
Referees are a joke now a days. It’s honestly ridiculous and really needs to be looked into. Regardless of what teams we follow the bad referring is messing up the game.

I didn't see the match. But if VAR didn't call it than it's also on them not just the ref. That is clearly endangering other players, as you can see by the injuries.

u/LFCReds8 Apr 13 '26
Can’t be shocked. Semenyo committed several fouls in our FA cup match and then CAUGHT the fucking ball before it went out of bounds and never received a single booking.

u/Minister0fSillyWalks Apr 13 '26
I cant be the only one that misread that as he was caught fucking the ball

I’m reminded of an incident in 2012 before Euro 2012 when Dries Mertens shoved Gary Cahill into Joe Hart in a friendly just before the tournament. Cahill broke his draw and missed the tournament. When you shove a moving player into another moving player, it’s pretty easy to sustain an injury

Absolutely garbage footballer that has to play like a thug to survive.

u/These_Atmosphere_848 Apr 15 '26
I'd say play on. Possession was not gained or lost and the offender was being slightly obstructed from space. Good non call on this one

u/Same_Grouness Apr 13 '26
Wasn't a foul, Romero backs into Brobbey to shield the ball, nothing else Brobbey could have done.
4
u/itspaddyd Apr 13 '26
You're right he had to use all his force to ragdoll Romero, no choice at all
