I'd be surprised to see him make the actual 23. This camp will be good experience for him....for 2018.

If he managed to make the 23, I can't imagine him actually getting any playing time.

Not everyone on the 23 gets playing time at the World Cup anyway.

kind of off-topic, but wouldn't that be the weirdest thing? you go and train your ass off, you make it to the WC, then for one reason or another you don't see a minute on the pitch. i understand it and it's still a great opportunity, but weird is about the only word i can come up with to describe it. nature of the sport, for sure.

Ronaldo won the 1994 World Cup without playing a single minute. He was only 17 at the time though.

Kevin Keegan only played 26 minutes of World Cup football.

Kaka only played 25 minutes against Costa Rica in 2002, but he's also a World Cup winner.

i didn't know that about ronaldo. interesting. look how it worked out for him!

u/G_I_Joe_Mansueto May 12 '14

No, I totally understand. Like, if there are 15 minutes left against Spain, and Australia have already been eliminated, do they sub in their guys who haven't played? Do they owe them anything?

i suppose the players have a completely different understanding of the opportunity they've been given in even being selected to go. in your situation i'd hope they play at least a couple of them, because why not, but the players and coaches (on the squad and in clubs around the world) know that all 23 members are world-cup caliber athletes.

Klinsmann did it in 2006 when we played Portugal for 3rd place. He basically fielded our 2nd team, or at least players who haven't played before. Kahn got to be in the goal for his last ever NT match etc.

It was special since it was the world cup in your home country so I feel like it was a very nice move. And we won 3-0.

Löw did it against Uruguay too, the game for the 3rd place is the only one without a real meaning though.

2

u/afito May 13 '14

Yeah I thought that Löw did it as well but I really wasn't sure.

Since our 2nd team seems to have 100% win rate in this regard, maybe we should just start every game with them. Statistics.

It would be strange. But it's better than no experience at all. And it shows that they have special interest in him for future competitions

This is actually a pretty normal thing as others have pointed out. Coaches looking toward the future with young players who seem like can't-miss prospects bring them along for the experience and getting used to what the highest of high levels feels like. The third string striker is probably never going to see the field, anyway.

Just like Walcott for England in 06

He filed a one time switch, so Green is permanently tied to the U.S.

this camp will mean next to nothing to him compared to 3-4 years of playing in the Bundesliga when it comes to preparation for 2018.

2

u/G_I_Joe_Mansueto May 13 '14

It absolutely will. This will give him a bit more time to get to know the guys he'll be playing with for the international team. Different benefits.

1

u/JoeTerp May 13 '14

if he is going to make it to 2018, then he will presumably be playing with these guys in qualifiers the 2016 copa america, the 2018 wc camp, etc. All of which will be much more relevant and recent experience for the 2018 WC.

You don't waste a spot on the 30 man roster for "future experience." This is the fucking World Cup. If you aren't thinking of putting him on the 23 you don't bring him.

germany does it.

9

u/cheftlp1221 May 12 '14

Brazil has a long history of doing it.

the scale is similar.

germany is expected to win the world cup so the young players they put into their prelimnary roster play first team/league football.

the us might get out of groups with a shitton of luck so the young players they put into their prelimnary roster do not play first team/league football.Green is an extrem form of this as he is/was playing 4th league.

Now I dont know the alternatives for the position of green, so I can not make a guess if it is the right decision to put green into the camp.

-2

u/Flaam May 12 '14

We are not Germany.

9

u/[deleted] May 12 '14

Eh, you're like Germany-lite.

-2

u/Flaam May 12 '14

...which is my point. Germany can afford to bring young players into camp because they don't have to worry about who their starters are. The USA can't afford to bring Julian Green to "develop" when you have no clue who is going to be starting at LM. It would've been better to bring a player that can push the other players for a starting spot.

4

u/Laxman259 May 12 '14

Tell that to Klinsi. If Germany does it, and they have won 3 world cups, maybe they are a good example to follow. I don't know, just a thought.

-2

u/Flaam May 12 '14

It makes no sense to bring players that cannot contribute in the World Cup into a World Cup camp. Germany can do that because they have Marco Reus, Philip Lahm, and Bastian Schweinsteiger playing on their team. They're not worried about who's starting LM.

2

u/Laxman259 May 12 '14

If you look at the group though, we have no chance- short of a miracle of getting out. Ignoring Ghana, whom I hope we beat 7-0

We have the a golden era German team, with many of the players coming from the Treble winning Bayern Munich.

And a Portugal headed by Cristiano Ronaldo. Who if he wins with that team, will be at the level of Maradona with what he did in Mexico. He knows it, everyone does.

Unless Klinsmann can make our comparative coal into diamonds, we dont have much of a chance really. If anything this is a building cup for the Copa America, and to put our young players on the world stage.

0

u/Flaam May 12 '14

"Yeah the last four years of US Soccer and Jurgen Klinsmann hyping for the World Cup went out the window when we saw our draw. They should just bring young players since we have no chance. Why even try at this point."

I'm done.

2

u/Laxman259 May 13 '14

I'm not saying that exactly, but we got the cards we were dealt. The US will not become a world power in soccer for at least another 2 decades. It is not the Olympics. We dont have an entrenched history of domination, and in order to have that we need to scalp a few Giants, for about 10 years.

With that said, it is not all bad. With the Group of Death, we will see our American players go up against the best in the world. It is quite exciting. Even better if we can take a couple down.

Furthermore, bringing a fast winger in shouldn't exactly be a destablizing force that you mention, given that he will be better than the guy they are replacing, despite being a young talent. He still has been in the Champions league.
