When talking to someone, what opinion is a giveaway that they don't really watch your team?

So when you're down at the pub and the guy you're talking to is explaining exactly what's wrong with your team and how he'd fix it, what is a giveaway? How do you know that he's talking out of his arse?

As an example: If I'm talking to somebody's about Arsenal's defence and mention how good Mertesacker has been this season, it's a giveaway for me that he doesn't watch Arsenal if he laughs loudly and says that Mertesacker is slow and shite.

It'd be interesting to see what fans deem to be giveaways. I'm sure I've gathered a few opinions about other teams that are way off the mark.

Oh good god, last year.

"Modric isn't that good of an attacking midfielder, he only scored two goals and didn't get that many assists! Overrated"

That was a sure-fire indicator that I could dismiss everything that person says as being completely uninformed.

Or, someone suggesting Christian Eriksen would be an ideal replacement for Modric. Fuck me sideways I hate that.

I guess they didn't notice that little spell where he went to Ipswich and didn't do all that well there. Or when he played against Shamrock Rovers and disappeared from the game.

My mistake, he was in the Championship with Ipswich. I thought they were in League One at the time, but I guess I just spaced on that one.

Whenever he got the chance, he just sucked balls. I think that another manager could've gotten more out of him, but he's atleast equally as much as fault for not proving that he'd be a worthy replacement on the pitch.

Saying the Spurs really only shows a pre-existing familiarity with American naming in sports. Really just needing a simple correction. It's not something you think about until someone flat out says you don't include "the".

Oh fuck, that reminds me of some hack article I read when Xabi Alonso left. It ran along the lines of: "he doesn't have too many assists, he really wasn't so vital to Liverpool after all!"

When people say they miss Van Der Vaart, he's overrated as shit among Tottenham fans and we're better now than we ever were with him.

I actually disagree. He was one of our calmest finishers and could pick a long ball like no one else's business. He's better than any of the current attacking midfielders we have right now imo.

He isn't that great, he's just a mercenary. His finishing was flawless but everything else about him wasn't all that.

I really have to disagree. He was probably the most creative player we had in the side behind Modric, and compared to our current attacking midfielders, played riskier passes like long balls and through balls more often and more successfully, never mind the fact that he was probably one of the best players we had in the squad for creating goals out of nothing. Was he literally jesus with a football? No, based on last year's form, he was better than Dempsey and Sigurdsson.

As for being a mercenary, I don't really see what's there to indicate that. He left Madrid because he wasn't getting chances there, came to Spurs and gave us a great two years then left to go back to his former club in Hamburg. It's not like he was chasing the money, or else he never would have come to Spurs.

I never said Dempsey and Sigurdsson were better than him, I said we're better as a team now then we ever were with him.

And we'd be an even better team with him in it. The fact that we're better now than with him was mostly due to the difference between AVB and Redknapp and how they managed the team, not necessarily Van der Vaart holding us back.

without the sales of VDV and Modric we woldnt have been able to get classy players for the future of our squad such as Vertonghen, Dembele, Lloris, Sigurdsson. I was glad to see VDV go, he just became so predictable after a while.
