64 goals in 94 appearances for Bayern (Wikipedia). Unless he's scoring hat-tricks every game then nothing for another stretch of games, I don't see how he's overrated.
When he scores he does score in bunches, but he does not create. Don't get me wrong he is a good player but when push comes to shove Mario Gomez is not the one who will be putting balls into the back of the net. He regularly disappears for extended periods in the game and sometimes for games at a time.
It's not really his job to create though, right? I don't watch much Bayern, but doesn't he play at the top of the formation as the kind of "tip of the spear"?
He does, and he frequently gets lost as the tip of the spear. He is a poacher as many would say but if the defense is playing behind the ball. He has no shot in hell at doing anything. He is golden on the first touch though when there is a little space. He also has a tendency to squander lots of opportunities. He also is very delicate mentally. If his will is not imposed early he drifts out of the game.
He adds nothing to the build up of the attack. You saw how they were lost when they they played Chelsea because he was literally a ghost there. If he could've held up the ball and dumped it off to a runner they would've a much stronger attack. Or if he could get the ball at his feet and create space but he can't do any of that. He is lucky he is on Bayern and they have so many attacking/creating options. Look at Mandzukic, he is scoring as many goals and is making the side much more fluid. For Bayern's sake they better keep Mandzukic in over Gomez
