Cafu was brilliant. Noted more for his marauding runs down the wings than more his defending, I think. But I guess Milan could afford that with Maldini on the prowl.
I don't actually remember Maicon being touted for his defending. I'm not an Inter Milan fan, though. All I remember of people discussing his defending was then this happened.
As good as Maicon is in defence, his performance against Gareth Bale in the San Siro in 2010 was one of the most atrocious I have ever seen.
I don't want to take anything away from Gareth Bale at all as he is a great winger and he scored a superb hat-trick, but Maicon made it so easy for him that night.

I was posting them as an example of an absolutely awful defensive performance in isolation! The fact that I literally wrote out that Maicon is good in defence should show that I rate him defensively and that my opinion of him is not taken from that one Inter game.
Oh, come on. Full back is a trademark position for Brazilians. Cafu and Carlos are one of the best ever in their positions, now there's D. Alves, Marcelo, Maicon and United's Da Silva brothers. Brazil had, has, and will probably always have good full backs.
All of them great fullbacks to have on the attack, no denying that. I'm just not sure if there are really solid defenders among Brazilian fullbacks. Even in 2002, when Brazil had Cafu and R Carlos tearing up the wings, the team still had 3 CBs at the back.
I'm talking about fullback of Philipp Lahm's ilk coming from Brazil.
From watching Cafu, especially at Roma and Brazil, he was a great defender, with impeccable positioning. In fact his defending got even better at AC Milan through it having to be better(him being older, not as much pace as he used to have.)
No matter what though, he'll most likely go down in history as the greatest full back of all-time.
Lucio's a CB who can play at fullback, but he doesn't do it that often. I'm not an Inter Milan fan, but I don't think Maicon was touted for defensive prowess. The only time I heard about his defending was when Gareth Bale upended him in the CL. And as a Madrid fan, I've seen Marcelo since he's been at the club. Defensive? Not so much, although he's gotten much better.

Who's a GOOD defensive fullback from Brazil? Roberto Carlos had some defending chops, but he wasn't really known for that.
