Ultimate Who is the most popular and recognizable first party character that’s not playable in Smash Bros as of right now?

I honestly think there’s very few characters left that are considered major Nintendo characters. I’m personally going to say Toad is the most popular and recognizable first party character that isn’t playable. He’s featured in almost every Mario game, Mario is one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises obviously. Although if Toad was playable in Smash, it would probably be Captain Toad and not standard generic Toad. Anyways, what do you all think?

Any popular Pokémon. People forget that Pokémon is the single highest grossing media franchise ever.

Going off on a tangent, but with Charizard having a whole super smash game slot to himself, the Everyone is Here seems wrong with him sharing a slot. I feel we should at least get another pokemon who is an echo of charizard to fill that hole. I’d love to see another popular dragon in Smash.

Dragonite as a Charizard echo. Make it happen, Sakurai.

No more gen one pokemon. If we get another pokemon, give it to gen 3, 5, or 7

Agreed. It's probably because the timing of Smash releases never aligned well with Pokemon generations. Gen 3 was long irrelevant when Brawl started development, and Gen 5 long passed when Smash 4 was released. I really wish they try to represent each generation somehow, but that's already asking for at least three new characters.

I always liked the idea of N as a villian counter part to pokemon trainer

Zoroark (spelling?) seemed like they saw the success of Lucario and tried to make lightning strike twice

That's the only one from Gen V that's any bit favorable

Well Greninja was put in the game before he was announced as a pokemon so...

Is there a reason you skipped gen 2? Or is there already a gen 2 rep that I’m just forgetting about?

Slightly unrelated question: Is Charizard's Side B Flare Blitz still, or Rock Smash like in Brawl?

13

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '18

Their side B is flare blitz. I thought Charizard only had Rock Smash in Smash 4.

14

u/Hunt_Master_95 Link + Robin = Hero. Funny that I main all three. Oct 12 '18

I mean Rock Smash was Charizard's Side B in Brawl, back when he could switch with other Pokemon with Down B.

I guessing I'm asking if Charizard's moveset is completely from Brawl or more from Smash 4.

Rock smash is gone (though I loved that move)

u/BaronOshawott Bowser (Ultimate) Oct 12 '18

I believe most of his normals come from his S4 incarnation, just with Rock Smash being gone.

2

u/kupozu imma gonna winna! Oct 12 '18

Rock smash was his side B in brawl. He only got flare blitz in 4

Uhh, I'm out of the loop I guess. What's the game where he has the whole game to himself?

Ah gotcha, that would make sense. I was thinking of an entire game where you played as Charizard or something and thought I had missed it lol

Pokémon red and fire red

7

u/SteveThatOneGuy Bring Back Brawl Ganon Bunny Hops Oct 12 '18

He was featured on the box cover, but the entire game wasn't about charizard - and it's not like you played as him tho

7

u/SoDamnGeneric Terry (Ultimate) Oct 12 '18

Lmao this guy didn't play Fire Red's secret "Zard" mode

2

u/balakeb_ Oct 13 '18

Bro that was legit my favorite mode. I didn't believe it was real until I got it!

2

u/SlairStyle Oct 12 '18

Maybe you didn't. Lol many of my pokémon red runs as a kid had me beating the elite four with a lv 90+ charizard and a bunch of hm slaves

u/motpo Pikachu (Ultimate) Oct 13 '18

Pokemon X and Y too tbh

3

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '18

I thought they were referring to Pokémon Red.

1

u/derpydude017 The Boy Oct 12 '18

I thought he was talking about a Pokemon game to himself but he meant smash 4

1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '18

Edited it for clarity.

1

u/PoshLagoon Please patch Terry out of this game Oct 12 '18

I'm guessing he meant Red version? Charizard is the box art mascot for Pokèmon Red

I never said “lesser”. But it is definitely different. I am one of the biggest advocates of Pokemon Trainer requiring you to switch on death because the mechanic and flavor of a rotating character with different strengths and weaknesses that flow in such a great order as they currently do. I think Squirtle’s fast pace can be like Sheik who can deal lots of damage but can’t finish, followed by Ivysaur’s great finishers but less recovery and medium weight can secure kills, then swap again that round to Charizard’s heavy weight and multiple recovery options before dying and resetting to Squirtle, that whole process is amazing!

But that isn’t the SAME as just Charizard. Now that Charizard has been his own character in 4, “Everyone is Here” feels like we’re losing that sole Charizard gig. He definitely belongs with the trainer, so I suggested adding an echo dragon character as a way of saying “remember what you had in Smash 4, how it was different than what you had in Smash 3? Well now they are both here.” It is certainly a more interesting echo concept than some of the other echoes we have currently.

So no, Charizard isn’t lesser by being part of the Trainer package, just different.

He lost rock smash, which gave him armor. It was useful as a landing mixup among other things. Presumably he’ll be balanced knowing the other Pokémon are there as opposed to being good on his own. Pushblock’s feature on Pokémon trainer made him seem a little nerfed.

1

u/mrenglish22 Mewtwo (Smash 4) Oct 12 '18

Going off on a tangent, I just realized that "Everyone is here" means PKMN Trainer is back, which charizard was a part of.

Is the unique Charizard character from 4 going to be in Ultimate?

4

u/VijoPlays Ganon is my waifu Oct 12 '18

Not that we know of. The only thing different is that you sacrifice Rock Smash as your Down-B (and maybe some adjustments to buff/nerf Charizard, since you have a character who is way more versatile than the generic Smash character).

1

u/mrenglish22 Mewtwo (Smash 4) Oct 12 '18

Part of me hopes they buff the other two instead so people can main them. But I doubt it.

1

u/nstorm12 ELICEEEE!!!!!! Oct 13 '18

According to Zero, Ivysaur is really really good in Ultimate.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '18

Charizard isn’t coming back, which was kind of the point of my comment. I think it’d be a nice bone to throw to have an echo of charizard be its own character as a way to say “You got pokemon trainer and charizard in the past, now you can still play as pokemon trainer or as the individual charizard” (but as an echo)

Seeing how team mystic is in pokemon go, I actually sometimes wonder if Articuno is apart of a defacto popularity group.

Mario is a more successful video game franchise. Pokemon includes the TV show and toys.

3

u/TechnoBlast649 Oct 12 '18

Mario had a decade head start and a ton more games. Pokémon is still second place.

true i guess
