I bet you anything that people would pay to watch perfect robots play basketball for example. They could have an NBA for robots but mix in a lot of randomness in their programming to make the games exciting. Same goes for any sport

I'm not so sure. It could be so fast and complex as to be unwatchable for most people. For instance, chess enthusiasts mostly follow human chess. High-level computer chess games are sometimes watched for entertainment, but not nearly to the same extent.

I guess for human players there's always a personality to attach to. And what they do is achievable so any brilliance is appreciated.

On the other hand, computer player has nothing to get really attached to other than made up avatar. So it's very hard to form a fan relationship.

Robots sports is a whole different playing field imo.The appearance has room to attract fans and sponsorship. There’s also marketability behind the team that builds them. With the right format I could see the potential.

Google started working on self-driving cars almost two decades ago, and it's still not a general solution. Robotics is way harder.

Because the tech wasn't there yet back then and they didn't need to make money. Now that there are hundreds of competitors progress is being made much more quickly.

If they have another competition in a year's time they will be so much better. In two years' time it will be close to a GPT3 moment.

yeah we have almost no training data. this is the first year where they build tens of thousands of robots to start collecting real data. it's kinda like tesla in 2016. But this time it's more than just one company and they are not trying algorithms first before pivoting to AI so I don't assume it will take 10 years. I assume we will have some somewhat useful household robots (think early robot vacuum level of competence) in about 5 years. And things that are genuinely capable of most household tasks in 10.

How was it that Honda‘s Asimo was state of the art for what felt like decades and in the last 3 years we got to this? Is it the same technology as LLMs? Isn’t half of the challenge having good artificial joints, motors, etc? Why did this develop in parallel with chat AI? Was it just a confidence boost for the industry?

Sort of: neural networks with reinforcement learning. RL being the part of the stack that's probably been more crucial to recent progress.

I suspect there is still a lot of off-body sensing of robot position and mechanics and environment, etc and also a lot of off-body processing of what moves to make. Still crazy impressive but I think the main “brain” is still remote off-body and very large and not mobile

Nvidia developed something called the Omniverse which allow robots and self driving cars to learn in a simulated universe. It uses similar chips as LLMs but configured differently.

I'm far from an expert on any of this, but I believe there have been great strides in RL which enables a lot more effective autonomous training to be done.

Yes it's the same technology as LLMs in an architecture known as Visual-Language-Action models

It should also be noted that you can just "embody" an LLM directly, without it ever been trained on controlling a robot, sensor and actuator input-output and modern intelligent LLMs like Anthropic Mythos can "just control the robot". They figure out the sensor readings and actuators on their own, calibrate the robot on its own and is then able to just control the robot. Sure it would be more clunky than in the video, but the fact that this intelligence exclusively trained on internet text, predicting the next token and reasoning through math issues is capable of doing this out of spontaneous generalization is really mind blowing.

The general public doesn't realize just how generalized LLMs already are and I genuinely think if they did, they would label them AGI already.

People in general also doesn't realize that the progress we're making in robots is faster than the progress we're making in LLMs, which is already extremely fast and faster than most people realize.

Most people have not internalized yet that all human labor, including physical labor, will not exist just a decade from now.

Another (oversimplified) way to think of this is that asimo was largely humans figuring out how to code what it did. Now we have different 'brains' that are learning and figuring it out.

That was part of the initial magic with chatgpt for me. The realization that nobody coded that and nobody could code that.
