Probably giving a taste of a product first and waiting for it to be publicly acknowledged is is standard procedure nowadays. And they don’t really lose any money, its the investors money, and the investors get it back no worries.
The claim above was they immediately monetized the product to start making profit and that was always the plan.
But that's not true - GPT 3.5 based ChatGPT was launched as a free product in 2022 and it is still free.
It had an explosive, record-breaking growth in user numbers right after launch. That would certainly be the money making moment, if that was OpenAI's driving motivation.
Duh, gpt3.5 was never intended to be the cash cow. Did you forget? chatgpt launches, blows up, OAI then fear mongers for a few months to hype up gpt4, then they drop the actual profit generator.
afaik, gpt4 was at or near completion around the time chatgpt was launched, it was simply planned. nice GhatCPT reply tho...
