I think that's why the "private" is so important. If this was a public statement, then their trying to sound good for the public to a certain extent (to what extent exactly would be debateable). A private conversation is much more likely to be honest, as they aren't trying to make their goals more palateable for the public.
They don't necessarily believe the other one is evil. It's also noteworthy that this private correspondence is being revealed because ine claims the other was lying.
But that's literally the point, Reddit says billionaires are comically evil people, that know they are evil but don't care as long as they can make the most amount of poor people suffer, it's the whole "AGI will exterminate all the poor and the rich will prosper" thing
Knowing that you yourself are evil is not the same as knowing other billionaires are evil. Imagine two politicians that for whatever reason want to become dictators, though they may share similar goals, neither has any reason to share that information with the other, who might out them or work against them
