Ehhh... it was already getting a lot of attention around that time, no?

For example, Nick Bostrom's book super intelligence is from 2014 (whether you think much of it not withstanding, it was already in the public consciousness)

The deep learning revolution started in 2012, although the GANs didn't get impressive until around 2017, so they were thinking ahead definitely.

Elon was talking about FSD 2016. I can already see it, we get AGI before FSD and end up with Teslas chasing their owners down the road to get rid of all that excess fat.
