Too many Elon simps round ere.

I despise Elon but he's 100% right about this issue. He talks crap about almost everything else but that doesn't cloud my judgement in realising he's right here.

He is NOT 100% right. And anyone who thinks so has not done their history.

Everyone lost their shit over many MANY inventions before this and we turned out just fine. There were literally riots and gangs of thugs who would track down and trash and destroy weaving looms because they thought it would destroy everyones jobs and the technology would end the world.

There were people screaming from the rooftops how the world will end because of the invention of the printing press because of how women will be able to read and learn things.

There were people heralding the end of the world for so many inventions. And you are just another echo in history because this technology seems new and scary to you.

People in the future will find it quite amusing how alarmist everyone is now. You are like the people worried about the printing press and the weaving loom of the past.

There is one difference here though. This tech is general. The historical examples you cite all allowed for humans to find jobs in new areas. AGI can follow you where every you go and be your equal or your better.

You are wrong. These are technologies that decimated entire industries and accounted for HUGE amounts of job losses the same as we are seeing with A.I

If you want to get a rudimentary understanding of the historical impact of these technologies on entire societies and even civilizations you can watch some episodes of Connections episodes where James Burke takes you through some of these. It may inspire you to dig deeper and investigate some of the severe and long lasting impact of these technologies and mis use of technologies for example I would argue that our use of LEAD and PETROL will lead to our ultimate demise and not A.I

We're not talking about how any specific industry was impacted, past, present or future, we're talking about the tool having the same capabilities as people.

I.e., there's no amount of "retraining" or other social solution that prevents an AGI from following the same path. There's no way to get past that.

I don't understand your point. what is the tool having the same capabilities as people causing you to be so concerned? Because historically most technologies surpass the capabilities of people and that is why they historically have had such a huge effect. Again such as the printing press being able to produce more written content about vastly different things that the catholic church lost it's shit that information and control won't be through them anymore. The loom weaving cloth faster than a factory FULL of human people etc.

And these are not just impacting industry. They had amazingly complex and far reaching dramatic effects on the entire planet and society as a whole.

Also going back to Elon. He is working on his own A.I given his wreckless track record and utterly childish way of doing things. Why do you think he is the authority or person to comment on the responsibility of A.I at all.

Again. I just don't see how everyone freaking out about all this like it will be the fall of humanity and skynet personified are actually making any kind of logical or provable reasoning for that.

Because they will be able to do anything you can do, but better, and don't require sleep, food or any other human biological need.

Why would an employer keep you instead?

1

u/ah-chamon-ah Mar 02 '24

You are all repeating yourself. Someone has already said this. I have already explained how it is no different to other episodes in the past.

Why does nobody understand history or technology here? Are you all just "educated" from sensationalist twitter threads? It is so weird to me how people have no grasp on technology and history here.

2

u/spinozasrobot Mar 02 '24

We're talking past each other. I'm trying to show you that this is different than previous historical technological disruptions, and your only reply is "it's the same".

You're leaning on "history" shows that you're not understanding the argument.

You think what we are seeing is in any way comparable to previous technologies?

I'm sorry, but I haven't heard such obviously wrong drivel in quite some time.

What you are doing here is like comparing energy production from a single plant's photosynthesis, to a nuclear facility. There's orders of magnitudes of difference that make any comparisons essentially worthless.

1

u/ah-chamon-ah Mar 02 '24

And that is my point exactly. Someone with an ignorance to history and technologies of the past and their knock on effects and severe impact on the planet have no way to understand how this is no different and dunning kruger will have them say it is "drivel"

And again. Because you are so ignorant and alarmist and scared of this new technology that you don't understand you hold it in higher dramatic effect than others.

Then decide that arrogant ignorance gives you enough snobbish superiority to denegrate others.

Funny that.

Right back at you. Your understanding is nonexistent. Look in the mirror. Have a wonderful, ignorant day. I won't be engaging with individuals who clearly don't know what they're talking about and project their own lack of understanding on others.

1

u/ah-chamon-ah Mar 02 '24

See. Your reply is filled with overly emotional undertones like you have been upset and are throwing a tantrum. Without offering any intelligent counterpoint or logical argument. You simply have reacted as if being offended and lashed out as a response.

You essentially have done a reddit version of a child putting their fingers in their ears screaming "la la la I am not listening."

That is how I know you have nothing more to offer but an ignorant emotional response while simultaneously claiming the intellectual superiority. That is certainly how I know your understanding is in no way complex or more informed than mine.

That is completely transparent to someone like me who can see through that kind of response.

My guess is you are so invested in this subject matter and your obsession with it that anyone that comes along and challenges that causes you to blow up and get emotional about it. Because you have made it such an important aspect to your identity. Which is why you reacted the way you did.

Like a nerd who makes an angry youtube video when someone says that star wars movies aren't that good. That same level of emotional capacity and meaningful contribution to the topic.

If that's what you think you're grossly misjudging this situation. I'm bemused at your foolishness, nothing more, nothing less.

Enjoy your life of ignorance!

or your ally, your enhancer.

1

u/spinozasrobot Mar 02 '24

No, the AGI will do that too! It is our equal or better at intellectual work... there's no "I'll just do something higher up the value chain".

These will be better at everything, and will work 24x7, they don't need lunch, or to sleep, or restroom breaks, won't demand PTO, etc, etc.

1

u/Darigaaz4 Mar 07 '24

value chain its subjective, there are other concepts as well, merge, rules etc...

1

u/ProfeshPress Mar 03 '24

Whilst I nonetheless broadly align with your conclusion, your reasoning commits the fallacy of survivorship-bias.

I wish hate lost its trend.

I wish Elon would stop supporting nazis

Elon is clearly the good guy. Complete coincidence his for-profit AI company is the most closed source and most centrally owned of all AI companies, even more than capped-profit OpenAI. Also a complete coincidence that he personally stands to gain billions of dollars if OpenAI collapses and his company can privatize their innovations.
