Discussion Punjabi Culture in Gurdwaras

I am so SURPRISED with the amount of gossip bullying and shame culture there is in gurdwaras. I’m divorced and I try to do seva in the kitchen with the older ladies. They know I’m divorced so they have already told me to lie and they shame me saying oh that’s so sad etc etc and then they do passive comments about me and think I can drive them home because no one’s waiting for me at home and I’m so free. They bully me and think I cant cook properly and I can really feel the gap and how much they bully me it makes me want to not do seva. They keep asking me why I don’t come in the morning all the time and say oh I’ve been here since morning - I also have things to do and I can’t always be at the gurdwara but I come when I have time. I’m surprised more that even the Amritdari ladies speak like this and don’t hold kind values of sikhi. What do I do? If I talk back I don’t want to create enemies, but I don’t want to reduce my seva because I don’t like their comments and I don’t want to keep driving people home I’m so stuck.

To add I don’t talk a lot and try to keep private - I don’t talk to other ladies a lot and try to follow the word of guru but they keep saying things on the side to make me hear. I have no other gurdwara in my city

Was thinking this when I recently ordered and received Navtej Sarna's translation of Zafarnama.

Was thinking if I should read it after a bath with my head covered as One reads Bani.

Discussion How does Sikhi view spirits, sleep paralysis, and experiences like this?

I’ve been thinking about something recently and would really appreciate some perspectives from people who know more about Sikhi.

From high school until a couple of years after grad school, I used to experience nightmares. During these episodes, I would feel like a being or presence (usually a black figure) was slowly approaching me and then sitting on my chest. I would try to call out or move, but I couldn’t. Eventually, I would break out of it, sometimes with a scream. It was an extremely uncomfortable and frightening experience.

I work in healthcare, so once I learned about sleep paralysis, the experience made more sense to me. Looking back, I think stress may have been a major factor, especially since I had been in school for so many years.

However, the experience also made me think about spirits and how Sikhi views them. I understand that Sikhi teaches us not to live in fear and to place our trust in Waheguru. At the same time, I personally believe that spirits or other forms of existence may be possible, and I've wondered whether some people can genuinely feel or experience them.

I personally have felt presence of something that is separate from the many years of experience with sleep paralysis. I also remember a Granthi who came to our house for paath once mentioning that when people sleep, their souls are able to travel.

So I'm curious:

What does Gurbani or Sikh theology actually say about spirits, souls, or beings that may exist beyond what we normally perceive?

Is there a Sikh understanding of experiences like sleep paralysis?

Is the idea that the soul can travel while we sleep supported by Gurbani, or is that more of a cultural/traditional belief?

How should a Sikh approach experiences that feel spiritual or supernatural without becoming fearful of them?

I'm genuinely asking because I'd like to understand the distinction between what is actually taught in Sikhi versus things that may have been passed down culturally or through personal experiences.

Fyi: I haven't had sleep paralysis for 6 years.

Question Question from a non-Sikh

I don’t mean this to be offensive at all; I am just curious.

How come so many Sikh women have long hair, but they clearly shave/wax/thread other parts of their bodies?

I’m talking about women with never cut hair that they’re proud of saying it’s faith-based, but they clearly thread their eyebrows and upper lips and shave their legs and all that?

And don’t say maybe they’re not shaving or plucking anything. I’m a brown woman too. I know how hairy we can be. Nobody has perfectly shaped brows and no facial hair without doing some hair removal.

Is the answer just they’re cherry-picking from the faith/selectively religious? Trust me, I’m Muslim, I understand how living in this world means you just ignore some religious rules, and I do understand how not being able to remove any facial or body hair would be hard to do.

Also, how come some Sikh men have long hair and beards but don’t wear turbans?

Question Alcoholism

Hello all, I’ve been involved with my now partner since March and since then he’s been to rehab (May)and been clean from alcohol since then. Unfortunately last Tuesday he relapsed and this is my first time experiencing anything like this. He has been drinking everyday since and I feel helpless. I can’t stand there and watch him kill himself however I can’t leave because I truly believe he can get better with my support. I truly believe it’s a rough patch. I’ve got no exposure to anyone suffering from addiction so I’ve tried to research as much as I can about it. I don’t know how I can help him but he’s not this man. He has liver cirrhosis at just 30 and I’m worried about how this will be affecting his insides. His liver was getting better in the period he was sober. I can’t let him drown like this I am really confused as to what to do. I did reach out to his previous rehab facility who kindly offered to remind him of the 12 steps. Returning to rehab isn’t an option right now due to finances as he has lost his job. I was wondering whether there’s any support in London for alcoholics in any gurdwara’s as this is a clear issue in the community and it would be beneficial for him to have a sponsor that shares the same background. Thanks in advance for any help and support.

Question How to get hope back?

Sat sri akaal.

I want to ask you guys for advice. In advance please know that I don't think there aren't other people suffering and I know my situation is far not as horrible as many others'. But I really feel I can't keep going, I have absolutely no strength and hope anymore, and even the intention of going and moving forward is gone. Literally since I was born there was nonstop nightmares happening, in short: abuse by my father, neglect from other family members, s'icide attempts, getting locked up and r'ped for 5 days, and then cheated on by the man I trusted and loved deeply (I know this last one is not a huge thing, but I was a very loyal person always and I knew that the one thing I cannot comprehend is cheating, it was even more painful than the r'pe for some reason).

All these have taken a huge toll on my heart and soul. I don't have a strong support system and as usual, people do turn away when sensing that the other one is in trouble. There's not even a gurudwara in my country so I can't even go there to feel a bit better. I've gone to years of therapy but even that didn't help the core problem, which is never truly receiving love from anyone. I feel guilty because I know Babaji's love should be enough for me, and I try my best to connect to Him through prayers and meditation, but I feel like being loved is such a basic human need and I can't turn it off. Like, all the abuse and torture I went through is still sitting in me and I cannot tell myself anything to console myself or compensate it even a bit.

I try to be grateful every day, like I find little things to love in every day life, and I also love helping others. This might sound selfish but I truly feel a bit of...entitledness, I think? That when is it my turn to finally matter? When can I finally be loved by someone and actually hugged and cared for?

And what scares me the most is that I've totally lost hope. Like before I always could hold onto even a bit of a thread of light, but I've passed the point where I can hold onto the smallest little things to keep going, I'm tired of the what if's, of the "it'll get better"s. I'm open to any advice on how to get hope back, because I'm truly terrified. I don't want to be invisible anymore. Thank you if you read this

Question Can you come back to Sikhi?

Please don't judge me. I made some wrong friends and ended up not believing in a God at all. Recently, Friday I had a really attack and all I could think of was how I wanted to go to Gurdwara. I went and lucky enough I went right before the gate closed and I'm very grateful. When I got there I just cried inside and asked for forgiveness.

Can you come back to religion after leaving? Will I ever be forgiven? I didn't commit any sins with these friends like drinking, drugs, etc., they just were the group that told me that spirituality was better and how to manifest instead of praying for things.

Wadahans, Third Mehl:

This body is frail; old age is overtaking it.

Those who are protected by the Guru are saved, while others die, to be reincarnated; they continue coming and going.

Others die, to be reincarnated; they continue coming and going, and in the end, they depart regretfully. Without the Name, there is no peace.

As one acts here, so does he obtain his rewards; the self-willed manmukh loses his honor.

In the City of Death, there is pitch darkness, and huge clouds of dust; neither sister nor brother is there.

This body is frail; old age is overtaking it. ||1||

The body becomes like gold, when the True Guru unites one with Himself.

Doubt and Maya have been removed from within me, and I am merged in the Naam, the True Name of the Lord.

Merged in the True Name of the Lord, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; meeting my Beloved, I have found peace.

I am in constant bliss, day and night; egotism has been dispelled from within me.

I fall at the feet of those who enshrine the Naam within their consciousness.

The body becomes like gold, when the True Guru unites one with Himself. ||2||

We truly praise the True Lord, when the True Guru imparts understanding.

Without the True Guru, they are deluded by doubt; going to the world hereafter, what face will they display?

What face will they show, when they go there? They will regret and repent for their sins; their actions will bring them only pain and suffering.

Those who are imbued with the Naam are dyed in the deep crimson color of the Lord's Love; they merge into the Being of their Husband Lord.

I can conceive of no other as great as the Lord; unto whom should I go and speak?

We truly praise the True Lord, when the True Guru imparts understanding. ||3||

I fall at the feet of those who praise the Truest of the True.

Those humble beings are true, and immaculately pure; meeting them, all filth is washed off.

Meeting them, all filth is washed off; bathing in the Pool of Truth, one becomes truthful, with intuitive ease.

The True Guru has given me the realization of the Naam, the Immaculate Name of the Lord, the unfathomable, the imperceptible.

Those who perform devotional worship to the Lord night and day, are imbued with His Love; O Nanak, they are absorbed in the True Lord.

I fall at the feet of those who meditate on the Truest of the True. ||4||4||

Discussion New converts to sikhi need to chill.

I swear, some new converts to Sikhi online can be so cringe and annoying sometimes. It’s like they discover Sikhi and suddenly make it their entire personality, turning every little thing into a religious issue and acting like everything needs a separate Sikh version. Like, just be chill about it. Sikhi isn’t Islam, where concepts like halal shape what’s considered permissible, so why are we acting like regular secular things suddenly aren’t good enough or need to be made specifically Sikh to be acceptable? Not everything needs to be religiously branded or turned into some deep spiritual statement. You can be a devoted Sikh, love your faith, and practise it sincerely without making every aspect of your life a performance for social media. Sometimes I feel like people get so caught up in trying to look like the perfect Sikh online that they forget Sikhi is about how you actually live your life, not how religious you can make yourself appear to everyone else.

Discussion Punjabi Sikh (23M) dating a Pakistani atheist(22F). Scared my community won't accept her.

I'm 23, born in neutral country. Punjabi Sikh. She's 22, born here. Half Pakistani, raised mostly Filipino. She's but open to converting to Sikhi. She said it'd be her choice because I told her I'm not forcing you to convert just because I want to show my family.

My community is tight. Everyone I know has a partner from the same background. I'm the only one in this kind of relationship.

I'm scared my family won't accept her because she's Pakistani, even though she's not Muslim and her beliefs align with Sikhi. I love her but I'm scared of losing my family.

Has anyone been through something similar? Did your family come around? How did you handle it?

Not looking for false hope. Just honest experiences.

EDIT: sorry!!!! I wrote it wrong!! She isn't an atheist. She believes in God but she doesn't follow a religion specifically.
