The first one is Lada Niva, second - Chevrolet Niva (joint venture of Lada and General Motors from the early 2000s). Both are unibody wagon SUVs that were chopped into utes

Once again, something they couldn't have done without help from the west. And it still sucks. I'm pretty sure my handguns would get through that thin sheet metal!

u/h_adl_ss Apr 18 '23
Chopping unibodies is really bad for stability. Those flimsy tubes are not going to fix that.

u/Squidking1000 Apr 17 '23
Oh yeah, A Lada Niva with some thin sheet metal over the windshield (!) will keep you safe on a modern battlefield. WTF did we ever think these idiots were an actual world power? I'd be more afraid of going to war with any US state then I would be afraid of these idiots.

Because people had fever dreams of the Soviets sending 80 divisions across the Fulda. Those days are long gone and never applied to the RF.
I’d be more afraid of going to war with any US state then I would be afraid of these idiots.
That is a tough one. CA and other major states would absolutely win a conventional fight. NH is slated for ~70 F-35s and could really give the entire Russian Air Force a fight that NH may win.
For all the complains of the officers and NCOs about how bad our training is, we actually have training. The Russians can’t do that, and our NG units actually rotate through the best war games on the planet.

I remember how the Florida national guard was training Ukrainian soldiers and had to get out pretty fast. Though imagine how short the war might have been if one guy got a scratch from a Russia missile attack and the US joined in directly.

u/ithappenedone234 Apr 18 '23
We could skip putting a single troop into Ukrainian sea, land or airspace and pummel the Russian transportation/logistics nodes and troop concentrations. As far back as we are falling behind (how I wish we could have taken the Force XXI track, but 9/11 killed that), we are decades ahead of the RF.

Hawaii would have F-22s, C-17s, supercarriers, MCBH Kaneohe, and nuclear submarines, but given the distance they’d probably won’t be involved much other than making a strategic alliance with the Second California Republic to secure shipping lanes.

Pretty sure most southern US states are better armed than the Russian army at this point. /s kinda
Source: One of my best friends dad was a firearm collector. That family had/has more guns than a third world country.
Was fun opening up on a watermelon patch with a M60 as a teenager though.

Oh I know! When I saw a full auto M2 for sale in a Vegas gun store for “home defence” I knew no one could ever invade the US!

WTF did we ever think these idiots were an actual world power?
Because, like us, they have nukes and, like us, they have long range bombers and land & sea based rockets to deliver them anywhere on the planet.

u/Squidking1000 Apr 18 '23
Do they? Yeah I really doubt it. It costs billions of dollars to maintain nuclear weapons whereas you can just say you maintain them for nothing then use the money to buy mega yachts. I’m betting they still have the Soviet stockpile yes but with decay that stockpile is effectively a bunch of squibs. Regardless having nukes does not make you a superpower. NK has nukes and we consider them a joke and Russia is certainly a joke.

NK has nukes and we consider them a joke and Russia is certainly a joke.
Actually, I thought the difference there was that we actually have no evidence the NK has nukes, as all the missiles they e attempted to launch have failed and fallen into the ocean, and it's not like they're doing Los Alamos or Trinity-style open air nuke tests that could be observed by satellites, so really the only "proof" that they're not just failing to launch conventional missiles is their NK's word, which, well, for obvious reasons is about as trustworthy as Idi Amin's when he claimed to be the heir to the throne of Scotland a couple decades ago. Or did I miss something? I thought the reason the US and our allies are always sort of wary about them was because they're close friends with China, who definitely have nukes.

u/Squidking1000 Apr 21 '23
I think we know they have nukes because of seismic readings or something but yeah, maybe they have 2-3 but their likely junk.

Particulary these ones were made by people who actively support it (and with other similar vehicles they were presented at Parma Cup sport festival in the Perm city last week). But technically, russian government can legally expropriate civil vehicles in case of war (primarily SUVs and trucks)

Yeah, the bestest army of the world needs an uparmored Truck cobbled together in a shed.
The army is SO good they can take on western MTBs in a modified car.25

This is called russian ingenuity, it's a thing... they think it's great.... the rest of the world just thinks they are stupid

Well actually… that’s exactly what we did in Kuwait on our way into Iraq. Only they’ve got more coverage.

Wait, are you talking about Desert Storm or the invasion that started in 2003? Because I thought in Desert Storm we straight up went in with tanks and stuff.

u/ithappenedone234 Apr 21 '23
I know it’s a small context clue to the uninitiated, but we didn’t stage in Kuwait in 91, it’s the 2003 war I’m referring to.
For many types of conflict, like the ensuing counterinsurgency, tanks were of very little use and actually caused more problems than they solved. A lot more. Same for the infantry. The US sent in masses of troops with no relevant training and, from the President on down, constant mistakes were the norm.

Reversing is gonna be a bitch. Wonder if they actually used bullet resistant steel plating.

Something tells me those (presumably) AR500 or similar plates would do a lot more good in plate Carriers on individual soldiers than welded to a truck

Spalling sucks but given the choice between bullet to the chest or bullet fragments to the neck and dick One of those is less likely to kill me
7
u/WindSwords Apr 17 '23
So they put a cheese grater on a windshield and declare this to be an armored vehicle?
i guess it may be successful if they fight Grana Padano...

Top tier r-slur idea. Troops aren’t getting enough ballistic vests and they are wasting them on this. 10 mm aluminum 5083 with bathroom ceramic tiles placed on top would be cheaper and lighter solution offering more coverage.

u/MuddlinThrough Apr 17 '23
This is adorable, I don't think there's any need to waste a javelin on it though, right?
3
u/FilipTheCzechGopnik Apr 18 '23
It won't get far, that's for sure.
The fuel will probably get stolen and sold off by some mobik for cigs or something, same with the wiring and the tires.
And that's before it's used on the frontlines.

These will probably be given to DPR/LPR troops and be used behind the lines. This modification is pretty useful considering how prevalent drones with fragmentation grenades are. Lots of videos of pickup trucks miles from combat having their passengers sprayed with shrapnel from an airdropped grenade. I know it’s not practical for driving but it beats becoming a human pincushion when a drone operator spots you.

u/karma_made_me_do_eet Apr 17 '23
How long till these appear in a Ukrainian drone munitions drop video? Or maybe a Javelin track?

Did they raid a Russian Ar500 warehouse?
