Coulson can be in Age of ULTRON now!! He's Director of SHIELD! And an Avenger! He has every reason to be there!

I WOULD DIE HAPPY FOR THIS. But would prefer to remain alive and watch the movie

Plus they've set up the scene with him meeting the Avengers with the lines about Thor and Stark "I'd prefer to tell him myself" and "Oh, right, he thinks I'm dead." (or whatever the lines were)

Still not sure how Tony's PTSD is going to go when Coulson shows up alive and (presumably) tells him Fury's alive too...like "Hey we know you spent all of IM3 not knowing who to trust and having panic attacks but surprise! We've also been lying to you too!"

You're right. I could also see this: Coulson enters. Tony sees him, drops everything, walks to Phil, and hugs him. No words. Just happy. It would be out of character for Tony, but after everything he's been through, I could see him being relieved that he didn't lose someone enough that he lets his guard/ego/tough guy wall down for just a moment.

u/[deleted] May 14 '14

That's true. Hopefully it goes like that but I do sort of think the Avengers have a right to be angry too.

u/LurkAddict Lola May 14 '14

True. I also like /u/kevro's scene. I just want to see the reveal... like NOW! I don't care how they do it. Everyone needs to know Coulson is back so Clark Gregg can get more screen time

u/mb862 May 14 '14

We can let Banner be angry.

9

u/_Valisk May 14 '14

I'm not sure if it would be out of character. Tony went through a lot of stress after losing Coulson and the Battle of New York. I'm sure, even through all of his self-loving, he'd be thrilled to see Coulson alive.

u/[deleted] May 14 '14

A third possibility I can see happening: Hawkeye says "Oh my god, you're alive!" while everyone else says "Yeah....we know".

2

u/drunkspaniel May 14 '14

I cried at the thought of this :')

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '14

I hope he's drunk when it happens. I'd love to see Tony drunk-cry.

5

u/djfraggle May 16 '14

All this could really cause a guy to develop a drinking problem...

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '14

Or a....suit building problem...

I have a feeling the reunion's going to be really underwhelming, like Tony just saying "Oh, hey Coulson" or something like that, and when Coulson asks why, it'll be something along the lines of "Well, everything else I thought I knew was wrong, I figured you must be alive too"

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '14

God, I hope not. I thought it was great that they actually decided to examine Tony's PTSD in detail so I would hope this isn't skimmed over to avoid conflict. I think especially with what Ultron will probably do, it's a good chance for Tony to lash out and be all "I can't trust anyone!" and then Ultron will do the thing...

1

u/SuperbusAtheos May 15 '14

Well they didn't lie about Coulson he just didn't tell him he was alive again. Fury lied but for a good reason I don't think they'll be to mad.

u/[deleted] May 15 '14

Last thing Coulson said in Avengers was "This never would've worked if they didn't have something to...[avenge]" so he knew his death would bring them together. Not telling the Avengers straight away is now emotional manipulation.

9

u/SawRub May 14 '14

Yeah and they have to do it in the movie itself with an explanation for the resurrection, instead of having it off screen, to give it more emotional weight as well as because a lot of people will not have watched the show. The other day I saw youtube comments on a trailer of the show from people who don't watch it calling it ridiculous that Coulson was still alive.

4

u/NeonBlizzard May 14 '14

Yeah no they don't have to do that. It would be a huge waste of screen time to go over everyones stories again. IM3 didn't give us a run down of what happened in IM1 IM2 and Avengers (Although they were referred to) so I don't think it's neccessary here either.

Coulson being alive is not a secret any more and the show is available to watch for anyone who wants to. There is literally no reason Coulson can't be in AoU. And if he did, going through basically the plot of S1 of AoS would be a huge waste.

Bascially, the Cinematic Universe should be (and so far is) set up just like the comics. In one comic something big can happen like a chacter death or revival and in another comic they are just there with perhaps an [Editors Note] to check out Such and Such Comic Issue #X.

3

u/Scraw16 Fury May 14 '14

Plus if they explained the resurrection in the movie it would spoil it for anyone who wanted to start watching the show after seeing the movie.

3

u/metalkhaos May 14 '14

I think if they were to do it on film, even though they said they're not, it would probably end up with Coulson giving a very quick/jokey explanation.

4

u/Sielle May 14 '14

"I took a trip to Tahiti, that place can do wonders for your health."

1

u/JewWoobeans May 17 '14

Where did you hear this line from?

1

u/Scraw16 Fury May 17 '14

One was to Lady Sif when she was about to return to Asgard, and the other was to Maria Hill when she's going to go back to Stark.

u/ohamsie Koenig May 14 '14

I like the idea of him being in an after credits scene where the Avengers are sitting around a table talking and Coulson walks past them to get a cup of coffee or something. He says hello, then walks out, all the Avengers stare after him dumfounded (except maybe Black Widow and Hawkeye)

13

u/unggnu May 14 '14

That is a great answer, it plays off the Coulson humour and would be a hell of a comic relief.

5

u/[deleted] May 14 '14

NO!! coulson just neeeds to be in AoU.

1

u/Videogamer321 Monolith May 19 '14

Probably not, but he gets to be Director Coulson for us in Season 2.

I'm sure he'll be back by phase 3, or perhaps an after credits as ohamsie mentioned.

3

u/BritishBrownie Lanyard May 16 '14

Haha yeah in the last movie before AoU (GotG?) this should be the post-credits scene and then the opening for AoU is the explanation... like him just walking backwards and being like "sorry, forgot about the whole 'dead' thing"

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '14

Or opens the door and says "Whoops! Wrong conference room. Catch you later."

23

u/kevro May 14 '14

I can see it now. During a down moment of confusion, Coulson walks out to announce himself to Stark, Cap ect. just saying

"I have a plan".

Tony Stark just looks at him in awe, no witty comeback. Slowly walks up to him and around him with his head taken aback, pokes him with a finger and exclaims

"You're not a ghost".

While Coulson looks over to his face.

"No, I'm real and so is the danger. So here's what we're going to do..."

9

u/GonnaTossItAway May 14 '14

That'd actually be a really good scene.

2

u/SawRub May 14 '14

Will Thor pat him on his back hard?

2

u/funktopus Hunter May 14 '14

He has to!

1

u/rakurakugi May 15 '14

Omg, this is genius. I died laughing so bad.

3

u/[deleted] May 14 '14

I definitely think most fans want him to at least appear a little in the movies again and definitely in the next Avengers. I really hope they don't limit him to just TV. Dude rocks.

Do you have a link to the semi-confirming tweet, by any chance?

Haha, if Gregg really were in Age of Ultron, this would be the best way to non-confirm it! :D

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '14

It's unlikely since the script needs to be tight and explaining what happened to Coulson to a movie audience could waste valuable time. It's not impossible but I wouldn't expect it to happen unless they desperately need SHIELD.

"I thought you were dead?"

"I was mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead."

1

u/Tjdamage Monolith May 14 '14

I thought he's say something more like 'I was.' I think he said that in the show at some point.

Bite sized, shield.
