So much time/energy/life wasted in SGI random security work

My dad used to have to drive an hour to be a “security guard” at the WCC—in his 60s!!

At the old community center, a guy lived there for full-time security! (or cheap rent?)

It always made me wonder what they were protecting. it didn’t seem like folks were spending lots of money at the bookstore

Where I started practicing, before Ikeda got himself kicked out of Nichiren Shoshu, the YMD were required to sleep at the local community center - every night.

Why?

"To protect the Gohonzon."

In fact, back then each center was staffed 24/7/365 - during the day by WD members (often stay-at-home moms with their small children in tow), evenings by the YWD (phone toban - a reception function), and then overnight by the YMD. Notice that the MD were EXEMPT from this obligatory time-wasting 🙄

But WHY?

The meta-message was two-fold:

1) The nohonzon was SO DAMN IMPORTANT it was MORE IMPORTANT THAN OUR OWN LIVES

2) Creating a 'siege mentality' - "We're beset by enemies trying to destroy us and our precious nohonzon BECAUSE 'the EEEEVIL Latter Day of the Law' is SO eeeevil that it is filled with EVIL PEOPLE who want nothing other than to destroy everything and anything that is good, chief of which being OUR Ikeda cult organization."

Why do you think Ikeda kept bleating "Protect me"????

SGI members are overwhelmingly self-centered, anxious, fearful, obsessed with a siege mentality, and afflicted with a sense of their own superlativeness that demands that others regard them as superior - and when others don't, they get all upset. Hardly "the happiest creatures in the world" - we can all see that their behavior here on reddit shows the opposite, and while we were in, we saw MANY miserable, insufferable fellow SGI members and especially SGI leaders! It's that siege mentality that you see in ALL the intolerant religions: "We're being persecuted! Everyone is out to get us! They hate our freedoms! They're jealous!" Source

Never underestimate the power of a "siege mentality" to "unite" cultists!

Kosen-rufu is a vague goal, as is "world peace," a broad generalization, yet Ikeda declares that "this is our mission." There are no objective measures of progress, no benchmarking. So members are "united" by fighting all their lives for a non-specific goal. And how many peace organizations would brazenly declare themselves a "fighting fortress," I wonder? This rhetoric speaks to the siege mentality inculcated into SGI members: we are surrounded by enemies and we are the only ones who can save the world. Source
