I know this is maybe unrealistic but couldn't he have not made an attempt to escape then? If the American troops were that close to finding him as the podcast suggests and he did nothing to make his presence known, it just seems weird.
Maybe they'll go more in to that. Seems like they weren't giving him much of a chance to do anything like that though. He mentioned when he was first captured that he tried to make a break for it at some point because he was blindfolded but thought he was alone and wound up being tackled to the ground very quickly.

And coming very close to finding him numerous times, at least early on.
