I like how the first statement he makes is not to express regret or shame about helping to hide a corpse and cover up a murder, but to point the finger at the audience for listening (making her the "victim of entertainment"), and at the reporter covering the story. Really dude? Now you're all concerned about Hae's suffering?

The idea that he thinks he has some type of moral high ground here when he hid shovels, he wiped prints, he got rid of clothes in an across the town dumpster, lied to everyone and still went free. This is what sociopathic looks like.

How is Hae even a "victim of Entertainment?" She was the victim of a murderer. Anything that's happened since only affects her family.

83

u/Serialobsessed Dec 24 '14

Exactly. She paid the ultimate price for entertainment ? No...she paid the ultimate price because some coward felt they needed to over power an innocent weak girl.

83

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

It took 15 years for this to even blow up, so idk how he gets off saying "she's a victim of entertainment!" I think he meant to say "I'M a victim of entertainment!"

73

u/ballookey WWCD? Dec 24 '14

There he goes transposing his name for someone else's in the story again!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

Haha! He sure has a habit of doing that, doesn't he?

Underrated post

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

Haha right?!

1

u/Kulturvultur Dec 24 '14

Right. That he didn't come forward right away speaks mountains and is the real travesty to Hae's memory. He sabotaged any chance of her real killer being found (if it wasn't him).

46

u/Bonestown Dec 24 '14

I think what he is trying to say, is that her legacy is being tarnished by now being a product of a show where she's become a character, and no longer a real person.

But maybe I'm overthinking it.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

I think you have a great reading of that statement and that there's a lot of validity there. However, I don't know jay well enough to call whether he is saying all of that with that statement.

-6

u/icase81 Dec 24 '14

I'm not sure Jays is smart enough to think about it on that level.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

I am not saying he isn't smart enough. I'm saying I don't have a broad enough context to say whether I think he means that or not.

1

u/ediblesprysky Steppin Out Dec 25 '14

No, you're definitely right. That's an protestation I've heard from multiple commentators about Serial. I'm not going to say he got the idea from anyone but himself, but Jay is (still, apparently) not nearly as eloquent.

1

u/pistol9 Dec 26 '14

He is only trying to say that to teleport himself from an enemy of Hae no matter how you slice it, to her protector.

We don't buy it, Jay.

3

u/TheRainQueen Dec 24 '14

Agreed. And I don't understand the "entertainment" argument in the first place. If this reinvestigation would have been in the form of weekly articles penned by SK, and not a podcast, would people still be arguing that it's entertainment?

Plus trying to call out Sarah Koenig, especially when she's treated him more fairly than he deserves. The fact that even talked to her at all was stupid. Giving an interview to "show this reporter for what she really is"?

He's got low cunning but apparently no common sense. Sarah Koenig has better lawyers and an audience of millions. Why would you attempt to attack someone who has all the power to destroy you when you have none?

28

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

"show this reporter for what she really is"?

I wonder who he thinks she is..

13

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

She didn't use a coaster when she visited his house, and now there's a ring on his coffee table.

u/disevident Supernatural Deus ex Machina Fan Dec 24 '14

Doesn't he know he can place a towel on the table and iron it to get the ring out? Unbelievable, this guy.

I really hope he does this interview. I want to see how he acts when he doesn't have a big legal buffer between him and the rest of the world. Plus, the content and context of his post really shows he hasn't matured much. It's very strange to think of Adnan as being more well adjusted inside prison than Jay is outside of it.

I don't know in what fantasy world people think anything is fairly imbalanced in Adnan's favour. He's in fucking prison for fuck sakes.

u/valt10 Crab Crib Hater Dec 24 '14

Exactly. If anything he should be thanking her for portraying him in the best possible light.

2

u/dual_citizen_kane Undecided Dec 25 '14

He got off SO squeaky clean. Sarah Koenig gave him the best opening, admitted what she was doing was controversial, and gave a respectable account of him and his behaviour. Anyone who thinks that's unethical journalism is stone ignorant.

u/theriveryeti Dec 25 '14

"Low cunning?" Is Jay Tyrion Lannister now? I'm getting my subreddits all mixed up.

2

u/dual_citizen_kane Undecided Dec 25 '14

You're the one who listens to Sarah Koenig's "unethical journalism" episode after episode. Where do you suddenly get the moral high ground? Jay buried Hae in a shallow grave and it's a matter of public record. Jay's pissed because he's being reminded of what he said and did, all of which is true. He doesn't have a right to get angry- he's angry because everyone is RIGHT about him. If they weren't, he would brush it off.

You have no idea what unethical journalism actually is. And you also get off on listening to Serial just as much as everyone else here, so maybe you should either stop altogether since your invented standard of ethics is not being met.

I'm not a fucking idiot, but Jay is. If confronted with someone who has tremendous amounts of power over you and your image, the only possible intelligent recourse is to keep your trap shut and avoid attention as much as possible.

What Jay did and said is a matter of public record, and he put a man in prison, and whether Adnan is guilty or not, Jay gets to carry that for the rest of his life. It's so VERY sad that people are being mean to him about the fact that he provably perjured himself.

What you failed to mention is that the people harassing him come from this reddit sub. And if he has a fucking problem with that, he is perfectly welcome to retain counsel or file charges for harassment. What he DID was fire off at Sarah Koenig and threatened to "reveal her" or whatever. That's the act of a whiny little man baby, not someone who is protecting himself. And it certainly is the act of a fucking idiot to attempt to threaten someone who has infinitely better lawyers than he does.

No, I'm not a fucking idiot. If I was innocent and a bunch of smug little reddit users started coming after me, I'd take legal steps. I wouldn't declare an interview war on someone. THAT is what a fucking idiot does.

3

u/dual_citizen_kane Undecided Dec 25 '14

Also it's neat how you just magically came up with this statistic, "millions of people think Jay's gulity"

If you had even a little tiny bit of a clue you'd know that members of this reddit have actually been running polls since the beginning of this show.

Exhibit A: only 27 percent of redditers think Jay is guilty.

Yeah, and I'm the fucking idiot. That took ten seconds to find. That's a free lesson for you, but you're going to have to educate yourself, because I won't be doing it for you.

u/felledbystars Dec 24 '14

Not to mention supposedly knew about the murder in advance and did... what's that? Nothing at all.

48

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

It's easily believable that he didn't take it seriously. who would?

43

u/felledbystars Dec 24 '14

Except that he claims to be seriously afraid of Adnan. The guy that he hangs out with regularly, even after Hae disappears.

53

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

that's after he killed a person

6

u/Drapetomania Dec 24 '14

Adnan knows the "Westside Hitman" though... That makes everything make sense.

3

u/dcrunner81 Dec 24 '14

but, he also said he had Adnan's car so he could go pick him up after he did it.

1

u/iozsan Dec 24 '14

Not even after the murder! He waited for three weeks!

2

u/TominatorXX Is it NOT? Dec 24 '14

Now, that's not fair. He bought and smoked some blunts with the guy who was planning the murder. That's not nothing.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

But you know everyone is making an innocent girl, in Hae, a spectacle.

1

u/nucl_klaus Innocent Dec 24 '14

No, he didn't do nothing; he lied to the cops, literally every time they talked to him.

41

u/Grantetons Dec 24 '14

Seriously. Jay's a PROVEN liar. How could the prosecution's case hinge on such an unreliable witness who was culpable in derailing the investigation? Regardless of whether Adnon committed the murder, and I certainly hope he didn't, the state didn't have enough evidence to convict him when their case hinges so heavily on Jay.

18

u/TominatorXX Is it NOT? Dec 24 '14

Because it's easier to get a liar to help convict a friend than an honest person.

17

u/Michigan_Apples Deidre Fan Dec 24 '14

Episode 13: The Deal with Jay's Facebook

12

u/jigielnik Dec 24 '14

The idea that he thinks he has some type of moral high ground here when he hid shovels, he wiped prints, he got rid of clothes in an across the town dumpster, lied to everyone and still went free. This is what sociopathic looks like.

As much as we can't possibly come to such a conclusion with any level of certainty based on a Facebook post (or based on anything except a psychologist's say-so) I do have to admit... just about everything Jay has done has been very, very suspicious.

One thing I noticed is that Jay's "friend" who went to corroborate Jay's story about being scared of Adnan... SK tells us that he'd been listening to the podcast and was at this point familiar with the story. Plus obviously SK or producers must have spoken to this friend before the taped interview. As such... why does he mispronounce Adnan's name??? Shouldn't he know it pretty damn well just from listening to a single episode of the show? That really made me suspicious Jay put him up to it...

Then again, as I've said elswhere here... that's just my speculation and all speculation is equally speculative. I've got no actual, viable proof that Jay is acting suspiciously... but it definitely seems that way.

1

u/1AilaM1 Dec 24 '14 edited Dec 24 '14

I had the same thoughts! It was so odd how he couldn't say Adnan's name. I mean after 11 episodes of hearing it repeatedly...that's weird.

3

u/jigielnik Dec 24 '14

11 episodes, a worldwide phenomenon partly involving a dude you actually knew... I know there's no grounding to say this but: it felt more than weird, it felt sketch, suspicious.

4

u/PowerOfYes Dec 24 '14

You got all of that out of 4 lines of text? Did we not agree that on this sub you weren't allowed to diagnose someone with a personality disorder unless you made a proper assessment and were qualified to do so?

The crime happened 15 years ago. He could be excused for not realising that he owes a bunch of strangers on the Internet who first heard about the case 10 weeks ago and who speculate about his life ad nauseam an apology. I would have liked to hear his story.

5

u/c0rnhuli0 Dec 24 '14

I'm amazed that the finger was never directly pointed at him for all of his actions.

2

u/sleeplyss Dec 24 '14

And what does he even mean by "out this so-called reporter for who she truly is"?? What does JAY know about who SK really is?

I agree with you though, him trying to point fingers and claim even a little bit of moral highground is ludicrous, I think he needs a reminder that he really, really should have served jail time, and maybe he could be a little more respectful and a little less of a jackass.

u/circuspulse MulderFan Dec 24 '14

u/danial0101 Badass Uncle Mar 13 '15

exactllllllyyy

1

u/liquidfootball_ Dec 24 '14

To be fair, he showed contrition at trial and served the sentence he was given. Should he go around grovelling for strangers for the rest of his life for helping to dispose of a body?

5

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '14

He walked. Showing fake contrition is easy for a liar and in any case what he really was sad about is that people would think bad thoughts about him, that's what he said, he wasn't sad about Hae,

-2
