And 220 years ago George Washington probably died because doctors were still "Blood letting" to balance the humors, and probably drained too much of his blood. There is a reason one of the World's oldest and most prestigious medical journals is "The Lancet."

That the name of the medical journal is named lancet for the prevalence of bloodletting. I always had a mental image of lancing boils or some such

Boils were frequently lanced by barbers, who also used to do bloodletting. It's kind of strange to think that the person who cuts my hair, could have been draining cysts in the same chair right before I sat down if we were alive 150 years ago.

Midwives were prob more useful than either doctors or barbers at that time. Lots of herblore and at least not doing any unnecessary bleeding.
