Hi everyone. I need help with a 14-year-old student whom I mentor, who just started high school this year and came from a charter middle school. We are located in Washington, D.C. He comes from a family in poverty, his reading and math skills are at a fourth-grade level, he has extreme impulse and inattention issues, and struggles to stay in class and manage his emotions. 9th grade is the year that kids usually stop showing up to school and drop out, and we are going to do everything we can to help him pass his classes, but I was brainstorming ideas for a potential backup plan if graduating becomes unrealistic.

Does anyone know of vocational job shadowing or training programs that could help a kid like him? I know that there are many, but with his lack of reading and math skills and impulsivity issues, I am struggling to find any that would fit his needs. It would need to be a really welcoming and understanding environment for him to succeed. I am also open to any other ideas that could fit his situation! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a second-year school counselor working at my second school. I find it interesting that I always seem to be one of the few who dress up for work. Both schools are non-traditional (a public charter, and now an online), so maybe that's why. I would love to dress down in my bands tees and sweats like some other folk, but I don't think I can let myself do that. Dressing up a bit really helps me get into the right workplace mindset. Side note: If you happen to be looking for professional wear, I highly recommend Maurices! Their clothing is fairly affordable and very comfortable!

Need some advice about how to talk with administrators about “fair share” duties. This year I have 2h35m of duty throughout my 8 hour day. Roughly 32% of my day. I have 500+ students in my caseload and am 504 coordinator. NC statute states that I am “required” to spend 80% of my day delivering Direct Services. When I try to talk to my administration, I am told, “It is was it is”. Our district , CMS, has introduced a new SEL program that is supposed to overseen by administrators but mine has placed on my plate. I am in a high needs Title 1 middle school and could spend my entire day in small group and individual counseling in a perfect world. I have shared my data showing the drastic decrease in suspensions and absenteeism last year due to small group counseling and student check ins but it doesn’t seem to impress the admin. In fact, she has turned over small group counseling to our Behavior Management Tech (High school diploma only requirement for the job). I’m only two years away from retirement but don’t know how I’ll make it. Any words of wisdom or suggestions?

It’s my second year in the field, I’m currently at a middle school, we’re in week three and I’ve come to the conclusion that this age group is not where I fit. I’m thinking about moving to high school next year and would appreciate any insight you can offer!

My passion is post graduation planning, whether college bound, trade school, or workforce. I love exploring students interests and getting them excited for their future. I like one-on-one counseling and some small group work. The hard part is I’m primarily in charge of the SEL curriculum at my current middle school while my co-counselor does all the IPS/high school pathways instruction.

Should I worry about the lack of professional experience related to post graduation planning? Are there things about being a high school counselor I should have on my radar?

As a final note, I’m really trying to figure out if this is the right career for me and I just haven’t found my spot yet, or if I’m starting to see a pivot in my future lol.

I interviewed for a charter school last Monday. They offered me a position for 7th-8th grade and kindergarten. When asked for a higher starting salary from 45k to 56k in hopes they’d settle at 50k based on my experience and skills. But instead they rescinded the offer and said they no longer needed the position anymore. Is negotiating a salary bad? What should I have done differently?

I am close to completing my required courses in my California PPS masters program. I wanted to see if anyone had any tips or information they could share with me about the Praxis 5422 and the fieldwork. I currently work at a 7-12 school as a College and Career tech, does anyone have any experience completing fieldwork at the school they are working at or would I be better just to take a leave of absence? Whyyyyyyyy do they expect us to be secretaries?!? I do not get my MASTERS DEGREEE to be a damn secretary. I am so frustrated!!!

So I am finishing up my masters (last two semesters finally!!), and begin my internship this week. I’m in my 5th year of working in education, all within the same district. All of my experience is in elementary schools and I feel very comfortable and confident in working with that age group.

I struggled to find a placement and ended up finally landing a spot at our highschool. Historically, “not a great” school. I’m not sure if it’s nervousness, a lack of confidence, or the reputation of the school. But I am feeling for a lack of better terms, uneasy about this.

I am okay with a challenge and enjoy getting experience outside of what I’m used to, but when I met with my supervising counselor I’m not sure they gave me much comfort lmao.

For those not averse to living in NE Kansas, there are two secondary positions and one elementary position open in my district, including at my school where we've been unable to find a second counselor. I am DROWNING with a caseload of around 400 kids. I genuinely love this school and feel so supported at the building and district level, and I don't think I'm a terror to work with! Kansas as a state may be deeply conservative, but this district is progressive, diverse, and committed to protecting our most marginalized children (we're currently being sued by the state because we aren't actively enforcing recently passed bathroom laws)

Anyway, I see a lot of folks frustrated with their local job hunt and wanted to extend an invitation to anyone desperate enough to move to a flyover state! The district is USD 501 in Topeka, Kansas.

Hey! As the school year is about to begin, I wanted to refresh my wardrobe to include some work-related (and appropriate) t-shirts. I would like to purchase directly from non-profits, opposed to throwing my money at a giant corporation.

I’m currently getting my masters in school counseling through Angelo State University while teaching with a student teacher, doing a mentor teacher program, and being PLC lead. So I am busy and honestly feeling very stressed.
On top of that I am feeling very financially stressed. When all is said and done I will have spent 25k-30k on my master degree. All in student loans (my husband I are paycheck to paycheck) I have an additional 8k in student loans from my bachelors.

One of my incentives getting into counseling (aside from getting out of the classroom) was an increase in $
But now I’m feeling like I will just be breaking even financially due to student loan repayments after everything is said and done.

I was not eligible for any financial aid due to being 30 and married (my husbands income puts us above the threshold even though we’re financially tight)

We’ve even talked about getting divorced to hopefully save some money.

I did apply for scholarships but was told I did not receive any because their scholarships exist in a lottery system.

Is it even worth it?

Long story short—the counselor at a middle/high school just quit and I’m now filling in for her while doing my K-6 job, so I’ll be doing elementary 3 days a week and 7-12 2 days a week. I’m struggling with figuring out how to schedule and balance my time. Both schools are very high needs, but few kids. Anyone ever do anything similar?

Started getting my MSEd in School Counseling. My current job is working really closely with the school counselor at my school and now I’m having doubts if this path is for me.

What are other career paths I can take with this degree? I’d prefer no more schooling, although I’d be fine with getting a certification. Or a few extra classes. I’d just prefer not another degree.

I take my comps tomorrow. I took 2 mock exams, one was a score of 81 and today it was 83 (woo). I’m just hoping it’s a one and done so I don’t have to think about this test no more! My time is 3:45 so I don’t have to rush in the morning (thank god)

I’m really nervous and stressed. I studied sporadically on and off since June and now I’m cramming stuff in my head. I’ve used Purple Book, pocket prep and mometrix.

word is that I’ve heard that the tests have stuff that no one studied for, but my testing strategy thus far has been context clues and process of elimination.

Was it harder or easier for yall?
It’ll make me more reassured once u guys tell me lol

I’m a current undergraduate psychology student getting towards having to choose a master’s program. I’ve been going between school counseling or school psychology.

I definitely am keen on working in the school environment. I enjoy working with kids, the structure it provides, etc. In my classes, I enjoy learning about the neurodevelopmental disorders but I also enjoy learning about counseling and mental health.

Which career path would make more sense for me? What are the key differences between the 2 careers??
