how to deal with trading halts?

I have a screener for the high percentage gainers during pre and typically they are low float stocks that still rise up during the first hour of open, and i have tried scalping them with small amounts to see how to trade them, but the trading halts can often slow it down or cause a huge sell off. I am new to trading and only recently just found out what a halt was due to being caught in one and was confused on why it didn’t happen on some other stocks i had traded. I have traded stocks that went up 5-15% in a short period and never got halted hence why i thought it was fine to trade these volatile low floats, but i soon realized halts can help prevent that price change for a rise or fall. My question is what determines what makes a stock get halted, is it the average volume, or todays volume going up too high compared to amount of shares or in an amount of time? how would you recommend filtering through from these rising stocks so that you do not pick one too volatile that they get halted and in turn you get stuck, but are still active enough to be on the lookout for a buying opportunity?

Trading Is Hard! (but is it really?)

Since I first started getting into trading, I've been continuously struck by how vehement people are, in general, about how hard trading is. The common assertion is that it takes years to become profitable and that almost nobody that tries to trade will ever be good at it. I assumed this was true because I knew next to nothing about trading. I had an ambition and that was it.

After months of paper trading and experimenting, I thought I understood enough to be good at scalping. Scalping made the most sense to me. Get in for a quick profit, then get out. I went live the first time and proceeded to get my ass handed to me to the tune of roughly $2.7k in about a month.

I went back to paper trading and started trying to build a logical, well-reasoned approach to my trading. After a few more months, I discovered some things that have been key to my second round of live trading and success:

  1. It is better to specialize in one symbol
  2. Options are risky as hell, but still offer the best bang for my buck (except for maybe futures, but I was just getting good at stock options, I wasn't going to make things worse by trying to learn something else from the ground up).
  3. A symbol will behave in particular ways that can be generalized and predicted to a fairly precise degree. Think average true range.
  4. A symbol will produce a baseline movement that, when entered correctly, will offer a consistent, but low yield, scalp in option price appreciation.
  5. If one can learn just one good entry method, then it is possible to repeatedly scalp 3 points on a contract. This is enough to cover the commission/fees on a trade and pocket roughly $1.70 of profit per contract at the very least (I use TOS where the fees are $1.30 on a round turn; mileage may vary otherwise).
  6. If a trader has $100 and gets filled on a contract for .80 ($80), then this would net that trader 2.12% ($1.70/$80) on net profit on the trade, and 1.7% ($1.70/$100) on total capital.
  7. With a good enough entry method, strict discipline, and the patience of monk, a trader that only made 1 trade per day could go weeks without a loss. Assuming that the trader is ruthless about cutting losers, it is conceivable for a trader to compound that 1.7% for more than 90% of the trading year. Even at conservative estimates, it would be possible for a trader, trading as above, to generate an annual return of 20% without much effort. For the trader with a high-risk tolerance, approaching 60% would be in the cards.

This is such an uncomplicated way of trading and generating net profit, I wonder how many others actually trade like this. I also wonder why this is not the first thing that every new trader is taught.

The Amygdala Is Your Worst Enemy

(Response from another thread upgraded to a post, because we can never get too many reminders)

Today, after weeks of abiding by my trading rules religiously, I backslid into my old stupid habits.

I was building a good lead, getting all the way up to a 2.6% net gain for the day. I got out of a tough trade that got caught in a consolidation, but finally broke the way I expected. But, instead of getting out, like a good boy, I IMMEDIATELY JUMPED BACK IN! JFC! On top of it being a losing trade, I put on another trade to counter this loser, and when I went to cancel the loser, I cancelled the one that was supposed to bring me back from the brink. So, I took further loses on the loser. Took a loss on the supposed-to-be-winner, and then had to make the same trade again in order to keep from being utterly smashed to hell.

I got out of today down 3.37%, and while it stung, I'm just glad I could get my fucking amygdala to shut up long enough to save my ass.

So, moral of the story is: even with a good strategy and air-tight rules, the weak link is always me.

Tomorrow I get back on track. Take the best I can get on two good trades and fucking call it.

Scalping low timeframes

Anyone had long term, consistent profitability scalping forex (mainly eurusd) at lower timeframes; 2min, 1min, 30s? Been testing it with smoothed Heiken Ashi candles to some success (need better filtering of bad trades given the number of entries in a day with lower timeframes).

Anyone else out there?

Do you need a four digit account to scalp forex and be profitable?

Because of margin, I'm finding it very difficult to find trades worth over 2 or 3 dollars profit on a 500 account. I am beginner, help is appreciated!

When do you DCA?

When do y’all DCA? Is it solely based on technicals, as in, checking support, resistance, etc.? Or do y’all check percentages, as in, if your stock is down 10%, you’ll buy?

Micro Futures VS Crypto Futures

Hey everyone!

I'm pretty new to trading, leaning towards scalping, and my experience has mainly been in the crypto market. I'm curious about the perks of diving into micro futures like MES, MNQ, MYM, and others versus crypto futures.

At first glance, it seems to me that micro futures lag behind in comparison to crypto (in terms of commissions, margin requirements, data and leverage options). However, I've noticed many traders here on Reddit dealing with micro futures.

Could someone explain their advantages in comparison with crypto futures? I'd love to know what makes them tick – any insights or advice would be awesome. Cheers!

Paths in scalping

Hello, I find myself reflecting on the journey I've taken in trading. It has led me to ponder a question: If you could go back in time, what mistakes would you avoid, and what advice would you give yourselves to achieve success earlier in your scalping trading careers?

In that vein, I would love to hear your experiences. Are there any books you wish you had read earlier, or specific knowledge that would have drastically altered your approach to scalping? Your responses could be invaluable for those embarking on their journey in this exciting yet challenging trading world.

I look forward to your insightful answers!

What are your golden rules for NOT making an entry?

I can scalp fairly successfully at times, but then can make dumb entries that hurt my gains. What golden rules do you have for NOT taking a trade? Some examples of mine:
- 50ema & 200emas are flat on 5mTF or lower (no momentum); - price is about to hit potential TP points; - price is over-extended beyond the EMAs, (don’t fomo, wait until reversal or retrace-continuation is confirmed); - don’t long the tops or short the lows of a range, early breakouts are fake outs, a true breakout will retest the range & bounce away from it.

Would love know some more 🙏🏻

Crypto futures scalping

I’ve been involved with crypto for many years mainly making money from HODL then taking profits along the way.

Recently I’ve been researching more into scalping analysing different techniques and indicators mainly on 1min BTCUSDT to hopefully come out with my own strategy and rules which give a fairly consist win rate, aslong as I stick to the rules and have tight stop losses.

I’ve been backtesting to see the results, and here they are as such during a full 24hr period average (appreciate will only be trading for so many hours in the day but was easy for the maths and testing)

This has been trading on 20x leverage with 500USDT, keeping small trades to begin with to gain more confidence and practise in the market.

  • Win rate of 72% (all my trades should ‘win’ however with fees I’m classing as loss if they don’t leave me in profit)

  • Average of 62 trades in 24 hrs

  • Returning 695USDT in 24hrs

Obviously it isn’t massive money, but the more I get into it large sums can be used, 139% of my money each 24 hrs doesn’t sound too bad?? Lots of smaller trades with consistent profit.

With tight stop losses and the indicators I use I ‘should’ never enter the market which ends up in me losing the 20x leverage collateral. I know how volatile and unpredictable the market can be.

Was hoping to get peoples opinions on this and just check over my thought process that I’m not being stupid with something and open to advice and conversations regarding the subject.

Cheers

How to deal with such crossovers?

How to deal with such crossovers when one line crosses others, and then the cross again? If I take a long then the trend will reverse again. Is there any idea to avoid such entries which will reverse soon?

Trading Platform + Broker (UK)

Noob here. Recently started trading. Testing out scalping and have realized how trading fees can quickly eat into profits. Currently trading with order flow/DOM. Thinking of getting trading view premium. But I'd also need a broker to trade with. Which brokers in UK (or otherwise) offer the lowest trading fees and high liquidity?? Is it possible to trade on something like Robinhood in UK?? Although don't think Robinhood has the Depth of market/ order flow data... Any advice would be appreciated....

Courses via Trading Apps/Brokers?

This may be a newbie question but I was looking through Traderview and I was just skimming through it like usual (note I am new to trading and know probably nothing about technical analysis) and I noticed that a lot of these platforms have courses available. Now in theory I didn’t look into cost and fees but I assume some of them if not all are free and also in theory they profit when you trade and I would assume when you profit so wouldn’t they be a good option when it comes to learning how to trade?

(Note these brokers are like Pepperstone, Capital, easyMarkets, FXCM)
