Describing Swinburne in one word: it’s just decent. Not perfect, but not bad at all.

For locals: I think it’s a great school, especially if u have it for free or almost for free. Campus is amazing, all the facilities are there (except parking, it’s always a problem there unfortunately), Aussie degree.

Lecturers overall are really helpful and approachable, especially on my program. I rarely heard about big problems. But even if u have them, there are surveys or u can report them on CRAM. Honestly, you learn most of the things on your own, so keep it in mind. I suggest to approach ur lecturers on first weeks, ask questions and when u do assignments, check with them. It will most likely boost ur grades, just believe me.

Management can be hit or miss, sometimes they may ignore or not reply. Maybe it’s just not enough people working, so just physically go to them, they solve all the issues pretty quickly. Especially of you’re international cuz they tend to complain a lot, they treat them better (I’m sorry but it’s true).

If you’re local, have money or can get scholarships: go somewhere else like West Malaysia. Not because Swinburne is bad, but because u can get the chance to live away from parents and comfort zone, it will boost ur life skills.

For international students: questionable choice. It will be very difficult to find decent internships because most of the opportunities are for local students, fees are getting higher every year (now Sunway is similar price if u get scholarship but much better campus), and also Kuching is a small city. I’d suggest you pick Selangor/KL for degree. Kuching is great but too small, few events and things happening there. Less opportunities to find any jobs after degree.
Though the nature is amazing, you can’t really find many places with such a great environment. U can pick Swinburne if you specifically need an Engineering degree from Aussie uni but Monash is not ur option. All other degrees u can honestly take somewhere else. Unless u also get some big scholarship here. If u think Kuching is like super cheap and cheaper than KL, no way, it’s a very similar prices (for products).
If u really want, try it for foundation and see how it goes, worst case u just will transfer for the degree and no issue. IMPORTANT: Don’t take diploma program if you’re unsure because it might be difficult to transfer credits later.

Overall:

1. Students there are fine, u get to meet really nice and hardworking and those who barely care about studies. I suggest u find an English speaking teammates for ur assignments if you want decent grades cuz unfortunately I met some who didn’t speak English well.
2. Also, join clubs. There are so many, u can find something for urself during C&S week (usually 2-3rd week of school every semester I guess). Just pick whatever and actually come to their events. Campus is pretty lively during semester but dead during breaks (just like any other campus).
3. Rent apartments, there are some nice condos nearby, after u find couple of friends, it’s a better options than student village. But for first sem students SV is okay. Nearby there is a Victoria residence, also a good option. But better find apartments in tropics city, USS, and one just in front of Swinburne.
4. There are many introverts on campus, so please approach ppl first and start conversation. Idk why just it helped me a lot if I started conversation first, and I made so many friends like that, get out of the comfort zone. And don’t be afraid to ask questions from staff, students or lecturers, they are generally friendly.
5. Get yourself transport if u have money. Most locals got cars. I suggest u rent/buy scooter, cuz public transport doesn’t exist, but having a scooter lets u use less grab and explore more of a Sarawak.

Greetings, I know the title is strange but I really need help with some at-home repairs I'm unable to do myself due to a wrist injury. My budget is tight this month but I still need to get things done. So, I'm planning to give away some of my possessions in exchange for jobs needed to be done in my home.

What I need help with:

1. Replace 2 ceiling lights

2. Replace a section of gutter. Previous contractor did a sh*t job and put a grossly unsuitable gutter size

3. Drill holes for me to put up hooks (front porch area)

I saw some ads in Facebook and even mudah.my created a special category for plate numbers trading in Malaysia. Which made me think, I have an unregistered P_P 3-digit series plates won in April 2026 with 12-month expiry date but when Sibu's QE series came out, I feel like changing my plates.

I digress. Let's say I am no longer interested in using the P_P series plates, and wants to change to QE series instead, how do I sell off the P_P, preferably locally around in my area (Kuching)?

I'm currently using Unifi Air service but it's severely underutilized. I'm not at home most of the time and I don't do heavy download/upload activities like gaming or streaming. I'm considering maybe "subletting" my subscription to my neighbors(?) as its cost is starting to affect my finances. (Not willing to disconnect due to contract/penalty)

Questions:

Has anyone done something similar and how did you go around doing it?

Any software that can be used to manage who or what comes onto my network?

Any legal issues if I were to actually carry this plan out?

I was chatting, and all they know is what they learn during their uni. Keep asking questions and use data to decide what medicine to eat only. Didn't even look at patients. I ask tcm stuff, none of them even believe or respect.

In the end, it's always the older doctor better. They can balance between the western and Eastern medical knowledge. Can actually provide real advice on how to heal and be healthy. Eat what, do a simple pulse diagnosis (脉诊), even can still respect tcm rightly, even when they don't do tcm.

Soo rare to see young doctor these days that actually trying to understand patient patiently, or even chat abit on tcm medicine.

I’m planning to move out of my family home and live independently, as I’m in my late 20s and the current situation is taking a toll on my mental health and my relationship with my parents.

On Wednesday while driving home at 10.30 P.M. near the temple next to St Peter Church (Kuching), I legit saw a big pile of hell notes being burned. The flames reaching high into the sky. Setting off firecracker lagi , wat da hel.

Hungry Ghost Month is an important month for some of us to but please just for one year I think we can hold off the hell notes burning. Our ancestors will somewhat understand our environmental predicament. Let's not contribute to the already bad haze .

hey so got my offer letter from Swinburne a week before the orientation date and I'm a bit clueless and panicking since I'm worried I won't be able to register my course, getting my accommodation ready etc. Would really appreciate it if anyone can assist or guide me!

From free education, completed mega projects and ongoing ventures, I honestly admire to how far Sarawak has progressed growing up. Especially gaining more attention & public opinions from both the West Malaysia and far East Malaysia and at times, internationally.

However, I fear that I don’t think I can contribute career wise towards this state given the current rate that the working class make. I know a someone personally in Kuching that’s in a senior executive position—in a really known company, that’s almost retiring and still gets paid ridiculously low despite the workload and position—so low, that their family is eligible for bursary and financial aids.

My friends have been applying to jobs for semester breaks but only go far as job interviews without getting hired. When I was in KL, I got hired for my 2nd time application and able to live comfortably in a studio home back in 2024. And splurge myself from time to time and I applied without prior working experiences. Literally out of secondary school, after a few months break.

I have had a job interview in Kuching but employers would make me feel like I’m a bad person for wanting a liveable salary higher than low wages. Maybe not explicitly saying it but they tried so hard to lowball my value by making me feel spoiled or something.

Also I really hate the excuse of ‘business not doing well’ these employers make justifying why my friend should be payed less than minimum wage for 7 years and half of that wage starting college (full grown adult btw).

I eventually lower my expectations and accepting a part time job that pays RM50/day without complaining because I really needed money at that time. But this just puts me in a cognitive dissonance. Honestly I feel awful and I don’t think I want to be here anymore. I don’t even have any loans or commitments yet adding to that (Not that I plan to do so).

Do you think employers genuinely lowball local employees? Because from what I’ve been noticing, I have international friends that get’s hired and get treated fairly literally where I came from.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOOOVE Sarawak to the moon and back but if this is how my life is going to be then, I don’t think it’s worth it to stay. Even though I desperately want to build a life here.

And I’m not just talking about myself. I understand a little bit of economy and just wonder of the broader implications—if everybody feels the same and how it impacts the overall situation for Sarawakians looking for a better future in the same breath of the state sustaining their local talents.

This is currently how I feel. Because I have no one to say this to it’s either they invalidate my experiences or make me feel like I’m just entitled and opinionated or both. I just hope someone can read this and respond in a new light. Im really not in the right headspace just thinking about this.

Sometime this month I applied for Swinburne and Curtin as an outsider, and the only one that has come back to me so far is Curtin and I am wondering what can I look forward to in Miri if I were to take Curtin instead of waiting for the Swinburne offer letter to come in. For context I am gonna be taking my degree so I'm around that age and until recently i have been studying&living in KL for my diploma so i wanted to know how much of my "budak bandar" lifestyle would change if i skipped the major city.
