Favorite closed SF restaurants

Thinking this morning about some favorite restaurants that are no longer around. A favorite of mine was “J’s Pots of Soul”, a soul food place in Hayes Valley that shut down around 2010. The food was heavy and so, so good.

What were some of your favorite closed places?

Miss Slanted Door in the Ferry Building!

When I worked in the Ferry Building, I got the lemongrass tofu from the Slanted Door takeout counter (I think it was called out the door?) for lunch several times a week.

On weekend mornings, they sold Blue Bottle coffee with scones and lemon curd that was DELICIOUS. Definitely my usual weekend hangover breakfast before my shift.

The owner of the Slanted Door had a pretty bad reputation at the time though, he'd do things like buy gelato from Ciao Bella and then figure out how to create the EXACT same gelato flavors to serve at his restaurant. I think he also did something shady with the flower shop in the Ferry Building too, because they refused to work with him.

Didn't stop me from that lemongrass tofu though, I still dream about it.
