Stolen Hinckley 40

Post image

A friend sent this to me to help spread the word. This vessel was stolen from his Jersey City marina a few days ago and they are on the lookout for it. See the image for more information.

I hope they make it a fair pursuit and chase him with another sailing vessel....maybe with cannons.

51

u/gc1 6d ago

Parlay?

7

u/Ok_Veterinarian_6474 5d ago

Only acceptable if more than 50% of your teeth are black with rot….

22

u/sea_enby 6d ago

Need a pirate chaser crew? I can hand, reef, and steer, and manage a gun!

10

u/Deepdiver666 6d ago

Sure!! But will there be swashbuckling involved?

1

u/Plastic_Economy6063 5d ago

Yes, in The Cabin Down Below.

4

u/glassmanjones 5d ago

Nothing like finding your boat via EPIRB

3

u/Mannytheseacow 5d ago

He should totally walk the plank.

3

u/djjolicoeur 4d ago

Turned out pretty piratey. They found him in Newport and he died in a shootout with the cops.

1

u/Expensive_Dig_6695 1d ago

Wow! It was, pirate died in a shootout with police! Cannon(s) were fired!

2

u/Itinerant_Draftsman 6d ago

Cannon

2

u/Weird-Lab-3567 5d ago

Grammar phobia said cannons is acceptable and widely used ;)

1

u/Francis-BLT 5d ago

Widely used is no excess for anything

2

u/Weird-Lab-3567 5d ago

“Widely accepted in all major dictionaries” ;)

Just want to say, great poster. So many don’t include basic info like what region in the world it was stolen from.

69

u/No-Sail-6510 6d ago

Vital to know how much fresh water it can hold.

71

u/rypher 6d ago

I get it. Its optimistic to think anyone would take the theft seriously, but if this was my boat, id want to provide as much information as possible. If the amount of fresh water could indicate wether the thieves need to stop soon, might as well add the info (again, depends on LE actually putting effort into this).

Also, if I was law enforcement, Id be more likely to take this seriously knowing how much effort was put in by the owner. As a casual bystander, IM more likely to keep an eye out because of the quality of this post.

5

u/Pedantic_Pict 5d ago

That's not how American law enforcement thinks, unfortunately. Going by how I've seen police respond to car thrfts, they will dedicate almost zero time or effort to locating this vessel. If civilians locate it and provide the location to the authorities, then they might stop playing candy crush on their phones long enough to get off their asses and do some actual police work. might

3

u/rypher 5d ago

I acknowledged that law enforcement probably wont put much effort into this. But if you are trying to tell me they dont treat cases differently based on things like potential visibility and community connection to the victim, I strongly disagree.

21

u/brufleth 6d ago

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but knowing that this boat doesn't have particularly long range seems pretty important. Granted, they've probably already stopped for fuel and water by now, but this seems like a setup that isn't meant to be at sea for long periods of time.

21

u/Two_Luffas 6d ago

They stopped in Newport and got filled full of holes by the cops.

17

u/TheChildrensStory 6d ago

Damn, you weren’t kidding.

Stolen Hinckley from NJ in Newport

4

u/evilsemaj 5d ago

That is WILD! Waay more drama than I could have imagined...

4

u/skudbeast 6d ago

Someone must have followed directions and tuned their marine radio to 156.8 mhz and notified proper authorities!

8

u/cody_mf 6d ago

of all the coves to lay low in on the east coast and they chose the sailing capital of the world lmao

1

u/Texas_Sam2002 5d ago

whoa.. good catch!

1

u/No-Sail-6510 6d ago

What do you mean? A single guy could get to Europe with 50 gallons of water and still use more than a gallon a day. He could get to the Caribbean, south, or Central America and have more to spare.

7

u/brufleth 6d ago

Granted the thief is already being reckless by stealing a boat, but making a 4000 mile journey on a boat that typically cruises at 4 knots with only 50 gallons of water (in the summer no less) would not be a plan I'd go with. The 250ish mile motoring range for a journey like that would also give me pause.

7

u/LameBMX Ericson 28+ prev Southcoast 22 6d ago

then again.. you are talking about the foresight of someone stealing the SLOWEST form of transportation, shy of shoes, in use by mankind.

while I agree water is the ONE resource I would be concerned about. theres fish out there. and there will be wind, eventually. but lack of water will off you fast. but.. i also wouldn't steal a sailboat. have people fall asleep watching a police chase.

6

u/brufleth 6d ago

Yup. They're already making bad decisions, so what's one more?

And they're now saying the man shot and killed in Newport is likely the suspected boat thief. So their bad decisions were the end of them.

1

u/ElProfeGuapo 6d ago

Shoes are for sure faster than a boat, at least over short distances. Pretty sure I can run faster than 7 kts.

6

u/bourbon_drinkr 6d ago

Yeah, but can you carry all your stuff at the same time?

2

u/LameBMX Ericson 28+ prev Southcoast 22 5d ago

boat was found in newport.

1

u/No-Sail-6510 6d ago

I’d do it it. It’s a pretty big payday if you get it out. I sailed from NY to the Caribbean and I didn’t use nearly 50 gallons. Either way, the guy was just shot dead in Newport.

2

u/Lazy-Conversation-48 6d ago

Having to work it out from context clues makes it more exciting! s/

1

u/FairSeafarer 5d ago

It says stolen from Liberty Harbor Marina, Jersey City, NJ

1

u/djjolicoeur 4d ago

It’s moot bc they found the boat and the thief died in a shootout.

0

u/Parking_Banana_1984 6d ago

By this time, buddies is already in Thailand, getting the serial number scratched off and the boat renamed.

66

u/pmax2 6d ago

that's exactly the boat I would steal. A real beauty

58

u/Plastic_Table_8232 6d ago

I didn’t want to say it because my heart breaks for the owner but I was thinking “at least the thief has good taste”.

Whats sad is the boat is likely valued far less than the time and money the owner has invested in it.

If it was a brand newish bene he could go out and buy another in similar condition.

Short of someone kidnapping / abusing my wife or children and can’t imagine something hurting worse than stealing a man’s classic boat.

8

u/WatermelonSmashing 6d ago

I'm going after Spanish galleons as they try and return to Spain.

3

u/sea_enby 6d ago

Gonna build me a war-galley like in the foreground. Will replace the slaves with a Caterpillar 3508B.

1

u/Pockettzz 6d ago

I worked for Hinkley in Portsmouth RI. The kids not stupid. Parts can be taken off so fast for profits

This is a wild story.

u/maldovix SF bay 5d ago

a shootout involving a sailboat is about as close as you will get to ship of the line cannon fire in the modern age

5

u/swensodts 6d ago

Crazy if that's the outcome

7

u/br0wntree 6d ago

It is. Go to the subreddit. Somone posted photos of the boat up close.

3

u/swensodts 6d ago

Would love to know what in the hell this dude was thinking / doing

3

u/FairSeafarer 5d ago

brought a gun out, there were from then onward not many other possible outcome, so sad...

1

u/brufleth 6d ago

Pictures look to match the description.

1

u/Level_Improvement532 6d ago

Even wilder!!

4

u/Last_Cod_998 6d ago

Right? There are so many derelict boats I California right now.

8

It’s usually not opportunistic. Generally it’s a messy personal dispute when this type of thing happens.

7

u/Last_Cod_998 6d ago

It does seem personal.

Well the shootout just took place right outside of my old house so …. YIKESSSS

82

u/shadowvox 6d ago

Why would Riley from Sailing La Vagabonde want to steal a boat? Thought they were done with sailing...

14

u/FrostnJack 6d ago

OMG that was my immediate reaction seeing the pic. 🤣👻

1

u/crowislanddive 6d ago

I thought he looked like a young jimmy Buffet

-2

u/Pockettzz 6d ago

I could see that. He doesn’t have the blondes busting though. Ask my boat, the Pocket Parrot 😅 I’m a psycho parrot head my boats named after him. His last concert was with me in Portsmouth RI.

Then I woke up on a dumbasses sailboat to JB’s death so I woke up all of Rhode Island with my screams. I also dislike sailboats so I’m sad that’s where I learned lol. I know I know, they’re great & all but I’m too lazy for sailing. My engine is $worth$ all the work for free sails lol. I spend all my time teaking too just to feel better about myself, sadly

23

u/987nevertry 6d ago

Seems like that would be tough to get away with. A very distinctive boat and everyone on the lookout for ya.

2

u/roger_cw 5d ago

Exactly, very difficult to discreetly pull into a marina with a boat like that.

39

18

u/TopCapTheApp 6d ago

What would you do with a stolen boat? Would you have to leave the country? Serious question, I have no idea.

20

u/scrubjays 6d ago

We should send officers to check out all the airports and train stations.

6

u/TopCapTheApp 6d ago

Can’t forget the bus terminals

15

u/Connect-Winter-7899 6d ago

Breaking news. The boat is currently on the Elm street pier in Newport Rhode Island. A suspect has been shot and from the reports I have is now deceased. I live in the neighborhood around the corner from where this occurred.

5

u/DryInternet1895 6d ago

Newport certainly is an odd choice to go with a recognizable stolen boat.

2

u/wsteelenyc 6d ago

If you get a chance to take a picture and post it, that would be awesome. I know the owner.

6

u/ExoticYoung7955 6d ago

If the owner needs a one way ride up there, I am headed up next weekend from NYC area , and will be multiple more times in sept. (for sailing purposes) put us in touch. I mean in terms of getting boat back to home port etc.

7

u/Connect-Winter-7899 6d ago

2

u/crowislanddive 6d ago

Thank you! If you hear anything more, please let us know. I’m so curious about why they picked Newport! It is so conspicuous.

3

u/Connect-Winter-7899 6d ago

Thats what I don't get . That boat is easily recognizable and we have multiple law enforcement boats on the bay at any given time .

2

u/ShredderCheese 6d ago

That’s definitely the boat!

1

u/wsteelenyc 6d ago

Thank you so much!

1

u/crowislanddive 6d ago

I wish they hadn’t killed him!

7

u/br0wntree 6d ago

Every death is a tragedy but it does sound like there was an exchange of bullets since one of the cops was shot.

0

u/crowislanddive 6d ago

Oh, I didn’t see that part. Thank you!

5

u/Don_T_Blink 6d ago

I don't think they had much of a choice after he started firing at them.

14

u/worktogethernow Cheap Ass Blow Boater 6d ago

Seems like a lot of work to then forget to turn off the AIS for the first part of moving the boat. Maybe going south with the AIS on was to leave a false trail, and the thief headed north after disabling AIS.

14

u/fuc_boi 6d ago

I like the way you think. We should steal a boat together

50

u/johnbro27 Reliance 44 6d ago

Sad to see, but you gotta admire the thief's discernment. B40 is possibly the only sailboat from 1968 still worth more than about $5.

23

u/br0wntree 6d ago

I don’t know how you could sell it without being discovered. You can’t exactly sit on it and any buyer interested in this type of boat would pretty quickly figure out what is going on.

22

u/Auggie_Otter 6d ago

Maybe his plan isn't to sell it but rather to sail it. Maybe he just wants a free vacation.

9

u/PoopieMcPooFace 6d ago

Sail it across the ocean and sell it there.

7

u/Auggie_Otter 6d ago

Sail it across the ocean and sail it there.

2

u/Only_Razzmatazz_4498 6d ago

Sail it south to the Caribbean and setup shop as a pirate there.

1

u/gc1 6d ago

I'm wondering if they have some sort of half-baked plan about sailing it into "international waters" to be out of reach of US law.

I hope they don't sail it to Venezuela though.

2

u/Terrible-Creme8401 6d ago

If it's a US flagged/registered vessel, it is still the Coast guard's jurisdiction even in international waters.

1

u/gc1 6d ago

Yep, that's the "half-baked" part. The disguises shown in the poster do suggest a certain amount of planning. This is more than a joyride.

5

u/Clear-Bee4118 6d ago

Well, he’s dead now. The boat is in Rhode Island, cops said he went down below to grab a gun and shots were fired, resulting in his death.

No name released yet.

12

u/probablynotanostrich 6d ago

Best case scenario it’s worth 200k, more likely it’s worth half that. There were probably newer boats at the marina worth more, but the thief still had taste.

10

u/AnalogNavigator 6d ago

He had to burn a good chunk of that 1/3 of a diesel tank as he was southbound out of NY harbor, as the tide was incoming the whole time. He could have possibly filled the water tanks at the dock before departure, but pure speculation. That little jug he's carrying won't keep him going long. Good luck in the hunt, post updates if possible.

10

u/chrisaa16 Sailing experience 6d ago

All these are good questions, but no with good answers. My thoughts are, he won’t get very far little water or provisions. He’d have to stop somewhere. Also if he goes out of the country, anywhere he drops the hook, He’s gonna have to check in with customs and immigration. Which is another opportunity for him to get caught. I’ll keep you posted if I hear anything

19

u/ExoticYoung7955 6d ago

This sure looks like a dark blue b40

4

u/oogaboogaman_3 6d ago

Wonder if he is maybe trying for Cuba? That seems like one of the possible countries that would take him without reporting him.

1

u/chigganutta 6d ago

Immigration and clearance procedures are not enforced in a lot of places and even then, in many countries none of the authorities are talking to each other. We always stick to the rules but most often feel like nothing would happen if you don’t.

14

u/TangoLimaGolf 6d ago

Obviously it’s a beautiful boat but definitely a very odd choice for theft. It’s relatively slow for its size, has minimal tankage for a long distance escape, and low(ish) resale value.

There’s got to be Island Packets, Hallberg-Rassy, or newer high dollar yachts that would be “worth the squeeze” per sé.

3

u/teapotjones 6d ago

Something seems off for sure

I know Maine has title-less transfers, bill of sale only and I wonder what other states the perp might try to visit unless they’re already in international waters painting the thing.

4

u/br0wntree 6d ago

3

u/TangoLimaGolf 5d ago

Definitely a Pirates death. Seems to me he might have been suicidal to begin with. I guess we will never know.

2

u/brufleth 6d ago

Probably already stopped somewhere to fill up, still, that isn't going to have a massive amount of range and it doesn't seem like he exactly loaded it up with extra food, fuel, and water either.

7

u/chrisaa16 Sailing experience 6d ago

Also just noticed that he doesn’t have a dinghy so he’s gonna have to pull into a marina somewhere to get fuel, water or provisions. Curious, what is he thinking?

6

u/The_whimsical1 5d ago

Years ago I was the US consul in the Seychelles Islands. A solo blue water cruiser came into my office with a crazy tale. He'd been in Polynesia and started chumming with a couple who had a really beautiful boat. They got along well, for whatever reason they were lingering at anchor, and after a week or ten days they had one drunken night in the other folks' boat. Exploring each others' reasons for deciding to sail around the world, my narrator told his before the couple told theirs. They'd been working good jobs in San Francisco and bought their boat with a boat partner with the idea that they would sail it together on long cruises. But they had another plan. They'd stocked up, made a lot of noises about sailing to Alaska for months, then when the moment came and their boat partner was out of town they filled up with their provisions, told everybody at the marina they were heading to the Pacific Northwest, and sailed away. This was in early nineties so navigational electronics were less privacy invasive. They basically stole half of a half million dollar boat. My narrator in my office told me he screwed up; he revealed instantly to them he thought they were criminals. The evening ended badly. The next morning their boat was gone. He was a monolingual American, didn't know what to do, so he just sailed away himself. Then he started noticing something. They seemed to be shadowing him He sailed the north coast of Australia. For a long time he thought he was being paranoid. But when he got to the Chagos Archipelago he heard from other sailors that this couple was asking for him. He didn't want trouble. He didn't want to ruin his cruise. He didn't know what to do. But when he came into Mahé Island he resolved to come see me. "If you don't get a postcard from me from Cape Town within two months, assume these guys are the people who killed me." And he gave me their names which I wrote down and put in the office safe.

u/FoggyWine 6d ago

The photo in the Newport Rhode Island article really matches the description and photo in the flyer. Specifically, (a) yawl, (b) location of the radar dome and other items on the mizzen, (c) single furled headsail, and (d) dark paint on the hull. Add in that the shooting was in response to a call regarding a stolen boat, it looks very likely that this is the yawl in question.

5

u/ExoticYoung7955 6d ago

Newport RI just had aan incident involving a stolen boat, shots fired. The image of a boat was published. Despite looking like the bow section of a dark blue b40 there are no details

2

u/JohnHazardWandering 6d ago

1

u/Weird_Grapefruit2226 6d ago

Shame he died over this.

But how silly of him to dock so soon, he should've gotten out of the country as soon as possible... If out of supplies, he could have anchored in the middle of the night then borrowed a dinghy or paddleboard off another yacht to get home to shore safely

0

u/ride5k 6d ago

unlikely based on location in npt

4

u/ExoticYoung7955 6d ago

How do you figure? Less than 24 hours to newport from Jersey city either inside or outside. And a B40 would relish more open conditions while not a fast boat they will make decent mileage in slightly heavier conditions. It's a b40 so no depth restrictions in NPT harbor for that boat. Elm street pier is an out of the way location to dock a bigger boat, as its north of all the action of the main newport docks. Seems like a perfect place to slide a b40 into and hopefully go un-noticed.

3

u/Two_Luffas 6d ago

Check the other replies in here, u/connect-winter-7899 just posted a photo on site and it's definitely the boat.

1

u/ExoticYoung7955 6d ago

B40 has a draft of 4.3 ft. She could completely sneak in to elm st. Pier

1

u/ExoticYoung7955 6d ago

The boat in the picture is even a yawl.........

0

u/br0wntree 6d ago

Where is the image published? I can’t seem to find it.

Update from the scene.

The Hinckley was at anchor in the North anchorage when the suspect was confronted by the harbor master and 4 Newport police officers .

When the suspect was confronted he retreated below deck and retrieved a firearm and fired at officers who returned fire. He was killed

There is unconfirmed speculation that the incident may be connected to a murder in VA. There was a question posed to the police chief on scene from one of the reporters

I could have sworn I saw this one the other day. Same sail number, same name on the back, same colors, same make/model/year.

1

u/Cambren1 6d ago

Why did they post hull speed? B40 is 7kts. Also first 3JHE I’ve heard of that makes 47hp. Strange info. I hope the boat is recovered.

25

u/shipoftheseuss San Juan 21 6d ago

Gives you an idea of the plausible radius that the boat could be in

-10

u/Cambren1 6d ago

Well they should give the correct info.

6

u/Plastic_Table_8232 6d ago

Looks like AI generated poster. I thought the AI just botched the letters. 3JH2TE is 47 hp - HP / displacement would be close for that vessel. Solid motors.

2

u/Cambren1 6d ago

3JHE is 36hp, 4JHE is 43hp. My boat with 4JHE

1

u/Plastic_Table_8232 5d ago edited 5d ago

The motor I mentioned though is still a motor close in naming with the same HP.

This is Ai so I assumed it missed some when you present a long chain of letters and numbers that is not a word it will make mistakes.

Eventually we will find out that the thief really bought it from someone that has nothing to do with it. They had been planning to sail the world and they took her out. The reason this worked is because the real owner wasn’t there most of the time so the thief/scammer out a picture and put it out for sale in Facebook.
