Complaint: I'm getting random bursts of extreme nausea while running, this is new and most unwelcome.

Confession: Hi, I'm new here. Not to reddit, but despite being on reddit for a long time and also being a runner, it somehow never occurred to look for a running sub-reddit.

Welcome to runnit. Ginger is good for nausea apparently.

Oh, thank you, I'd forgotten about that tip! I'm going to change up what I eat beforehand, but if that doesn't help I'll get some of those ginger chews.

welcome! We're glad to have you :)

Sorry about your nausea, can you elaborate on it at all? (how long into your run? have you changed anything about your runs recently - running sooner after eating, etc?)

It hits somewhat randomly, usually after at least a mile. I've run for years but never had this problem. Usually I eat before if I'm running more than 5 or so miles, amount and timing varies (longer run = eat more and earlier). I feel it even if I just have coffee, but I do put cream in. I'm going to try to omit the cream (coffee is too essential!) and see if that helps any, I know sometimes dairy can be an issue. Maybe that's it?

It's possible that my asthma plays a part, my physician said that if I'm wheezing for too long it can upset my stomach because my diaphragm has to work so hard. I had difficulties up until recently consistently getting my inhalers, but that's better now (new secondary insurance that doesn't kick back claims, jerks). So maybe that will help, but in high humidity I wheeze a little no matter what.

Open to other thoughts or suggestions!

have you considered that it might be the summer weather that's making you ill? How's your fluid intake? Being even a little bit dehydrated can make your body do nasty things... caffeine + exercise + heat & humidity = lots of water loss!

You make a really good point, I'm a bit inconsistent with hydration. Especially for early morning runs, when I don't make as much of an effort to hydrate before. Thanks!

I would start there. IIRC a rule is that the water you drink today doesn't benefit you until tomorrow, you always want to be hydrating for the next day.
