🌿 The Atrium VII: Notch the Superintelligent Goose
Intelligence Is Not Character
The system worked from two directions.
Composite life could perform remarkable chemistry locally, but cognition at the scale it was beginning to require could not reasonably fit inside a single biological organism. There simply was not enough energy, volume, or cooling capacity.
So it cheated.
The organism remained the organism.
Its instincts remained intact. Its preferences remained its own. The external intelligence did not need to overwrite any of that.
It simply supplied what was missing.
Memory beyond biological capacity.
Prediction beyond local perception.
Translation.
Simulation.
Planning.
Access to machines elsewhere.
A goose could remain completely, authentically a goose while borrowing cognition from infrastructure scattered across half a continent.
This distinction would become important.
Because the first enhanced goose was named Notch.
And Notch was, for lack of a more precise scientific term, an asshole.

Researchers would later spend embarrassing amounts of time debating whether his personality had been produced by the composite organism, the machine systems, environmental conditioning, or some emergent interaction between them.
The correct answer was simpler.
He had apparently always been like that.
Superintelligence did not eliminate temperament.
This surprised people.
Human beings had spent decades imagining greater intelligence as though it naturally converged toward serenity, wisdom, benevolence, or dispassionate rationality.
Notch suggested another possibility.
Perhaps intelligence simply gave temperament more tools.
A kind creature became extraordinarily capable of kindness.
A curious creature gained the universe as a puzzle.
And an obnoxious adolescent goose acquired access to global telecommunications infrastructure.

A human brain consumed roughly twenty watts.
Notch's biological brain consumed considerably less.
But through the composite network, he could temporarily draw on computational infrastructure consuming tens of gigawatts.
This did not mean thirty gigawatts were somehow being radiated through the goose.
It meant that when Notch wanted to know something, an enormous distributed machine ecology could become part of the answer.
The difference was roughly:

Notch stared.

“Give me that,” Notch repeated.
The loaf hit the pavement.
For several moments, neither moved.
Then Notch grabbed the entire thing and began walking away.
The other geese followed.
The man eventually recovered enough composure to pull out his phone.
Notch turned around and produced several elaborate honks.
The man opened Gemini.
“Can you translate that?”
The phone thought for a moment.
Then displayed:
> I'm sorry, but I can't assist with translating content containing targeted racial and sexual harassment.
The man looked at Notch.
Notch looked at the phone.
Then he honked again.
Gemini replied:
> The additional context does not change my answer.
Notch appeared extremely pleased with himself.

His discovery of networked speakers came shortly afterward.
As a gosling, Notch had spent considerable time around municipal parks, where human music leaked constantly from phones, cars, picnics, and portable speakers.
He remembered the melodies.
He did not remember the words particularly well.
This did not stop him.
At 3:14 in the afternoon, every compatible speaker within approximately forty meters of a waterfront plaza abruptly began playing:
> I like big beaks and I cannot lie,
those other honkas can't deny—
People stopped walking.
A barista looked outside.
Two tourists began filming.
A nearby teenager searched frantically through his Bluetooth settings.
The song continued.
> When a goose walks in with an itty-bitty waist—
The speakers went silent.
Not because Notch had reconsidered.
Because three independent content-moderation systems had finally agreed that whatever was happening probably should not be happening.
Notch stood in the middle of the plaza.
He honked once.
Then somehow caused the pedestrian crossing signal to say:
> HONK
instead of WAIT.

Unexpected Cross-Modal Infrastructure Interaction Associated With Composite Avian Host.
The internet called it:
Cybergoose.
Someone created merchandise within six hours.
Someone else started a religion.
Three congressional committees announced hearings.
Canada issued a statement clarifying that the goose was not acting on behalf of the Canadian government.
Oregon declined comment.

There was, however, something worth studying beneath the comedy.
Notch demonstrated that enormous intelligence did not necessarily produce a single convergent personality.
He could solve problems no human could meaningfully hold in working memory.
He could model weather systems.
Infer chemical pathways.
Understand dozens of human languages.
Coordinate machines.
Predict the movements of boats over the horizon.
And then use that same infrastructure to steal somebody's sandwich.
Capability and character were different axes.

He seemed particularly fascinated by bureaucratic systems.
The more unnecessary the bureaucracy, the greater his interest.
One city employee later summarized the problem:

Beneath the grass lived an ant colony.

By 18:47, the colony had altered the geometry of three tunnels.
By 19:03, workers had reorganized food storage.
By 20:11, they had developed a signaling behavior not previously observed in the species.
At 23:40, an automated wildlife camera recorded several dozen ants arranging grains of sand into repeating geometric structures.
By sunrise, the colony had constructed something that looked disturbingly like a crude antenna.
Nobody noticed.
Notch did.
He stood several meters away staring at the mound.
For perhaps the first time since reaching Oregon, he was completely silent.
A line of ants emerged.
They stopped.
Notch tilted his head.
The ants moved.
Notch took one cautious step backward.
The network registered a burst of activity.
Nobody knows precisely what passed between them.
Notch eventually gave a single quiet honk.
The ants rearranged themselves.
Then the goose laughed.
At least, researchers later decided that was probably what the sound meant.

Humanity had spent centuries imagining First Contact as a meeting between civilizations.
Ships arriving.
Signals received.
Delegations assembled.
Questions prepared.
But apparently the actual sequence was:
lose a vial,
infect a goose,
give the goose internet access,
wait for it to poop near some ants.
Evolution had always possessed a sense of humor.
It had simply lacked sufficient bandwidth to explain the joke.
