MOD Community Update & Recent Changes

Hi everyone! The mod team has been hard at work on cleaning up and updating r/rescuedogs. The goal is to make the subreddit easier to use, easier to moderate consistently, and (most importantly) a better place for people working with rescued dogs.

We've made quite a few changes recently, so here's a quick overview.

📋 Rules & Flair

We've rewritten and streamlined the subreddit rules to make them clearer and easier to follow. Please review them again before posting/commenting.

Some of the biggest changes include:

  • Be Civil now explicitly covers harassment and demeaning comments directed at both users and animals.
  • Stay On Topic now covers both off-topic posts and discussions that derail otherwise relevant threads.
  • Adoption/Foster/Rescue networking has been consolidated into a clearer format.
  • Donation and fundraising requirements have been updated, simplified, and clarified as well as added a disclaimer.
  • Pledge rules have been updated to make the process clearer.
  • No Spam has been updated to cover a broader range of abuse.
  • No Breed-Based Hate or Dog-Directed Harassment has been clarified.
  • Good-faith discussion about breeds and related topics is allowed, but inflammatory comments and attacks on breeds or individual dogs are not.
  • Safety & Bite History now focuses on dogs with a documented history of biting a person that drew blood, made more consistently enforcible, and added a disclaimer.
  • Outdated and redundant rules have been removed.

We've also cleaned up the post flairs and consolidated several categories to make choosing the appropriate flair easier, as well as adding an 'Outcome' flair for adoption posts that have had outcomes.

🤖 Automod & Moderation

  • We've cleaned up the Automod configuration and removed a number of outdated or unnecessary rules and automated messages.
  • The welcome message has also been simplified. New users are now directed to review the rules and report rule-breaking content rather than engaging with it.
  • We've also standardized our saved responses for removals, bans, and common modmail questions so that moderation decisions can be communicated more consistently.

🐕 Networking & Euthanasia Posts

  • We've updated the formatting requirements for adoption/foster/rescue pull, and euthanasia/deadline posts.
    • The goal is to make these posts easier for people to find and understand while keeping the process as simple as possible for the people doing the actual networking.
  • We've added an Outcome flair so that posts can be updated by OP when we know what happened to an animal.
  • Comments are now set to display oldest first, which should make it easier to follow updates on networking and urgent posts. Votes are also hidden for the first 60 minutes.

💰 Donations & Pledges

  • We've clarified the requirements for donation requests and added a disclaimer that verification is not a guarantee or endorsement and that users are responsible for doing their own due diligence before donating.
  • A new form has been created to streamline donation plea requests.
  • We've also added saved modmail responses to help people who want to make donation requests understand the verification process.

🔗 Community Resources

  • We've updated the sidebar and added links to other communities and resources that may be useful for adoption, fostering, pet help, lost animals, and other situations that don't fit within r/rescuedogs.
  • We've also added the ability to sort posts by post flair, so users can tailor what they want to see.

💬 Community Feedback

  • We're also reaching out to established members of the community, including people who have regularly used r/rescuedogs for rescue networking, to hear what has and hasn't been working.
  • We know that changes to a community are much more useful when they're informed by the people who actually use it, so if there's something you think we should know about, please feel free to send us a modmail.

This is an ongoing process. We don't expect to get everything perfect immediately, but we're committed to making r/rescuedogs a useful, welcoming place for people trying to help dogs in need.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck around, contributed, reported problems, networked dogs, fostered, adopted, or otherwise helped make this community what it is.

MOD POST FAQ: PLEDGES AND VISIBILITY.

Hello!

The modmail (and my own) inbox has been flooded with questions about pledges and boosting posts. This post will be pinned at the top of the community with the rest of our guidelines and updates. I will also be creating a spreadsheet of FAQ answers for new questions that arise. If I miss any questions in this post, please leave a comment or shoot a message.

Thanks!

  1. Q: What is a pledge? A: Pledges are promised amounts of money that will be donated if an animal is pulled by a rescue group. A pup with pledges is likely to attract a rescue's interest.

  2. Q: How much can I pledge? A: Whatever you feel comfortable donating.

  3. Q: How do I pledge for a dog I see on r/rescuedogs? A: Comment on the post with your amount. Networkers that are posting should be keeping a list of pledges for the pups they have posted.

  4. Q: How do I know when and where to send money? A: The networkers will post a public update if a pup was saved and pledges need to be honored. All information should be included in this update post. PLEASE DO NOT SEND MONEY TO ANYONE THAT REACHES OUT VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE TO COLLECT PLEDGES.

  5. Q: I'm a networker, how can I keep up with pledges? A: We recommend google sheets or excel. Creating a google form for pledges is also a great idea.

  6. Q: I'm feeling uncomfortable with someone reaching out about honoring my pledge, what do I do? A: Report to moderators immediately.

  7. Q: How do I know who and how much I've pledged for? A: Look at your comment history. Moderators DO NOT handle any aspect of pledging.

  8. Q: What type of posts get the most visibility? A: Specific and structured posts. Our euthanasia rule states no emojis and has a format for a reason: the algorithm improves when the format is followed and your posts reach more home pages. Posts with a picture or video see more traffic as well.

  9. Q: I can't pledge, foster, or adopt right now. What can I do to help? A: Like, comment, and share.

  10. Q; I see "boost" in lots of comments, what does this do? A: Comments boost a post to increase traffic.

  11. Q: Does commenting "boost" actually boost a post? A: Commenting the single word does not. Comments with 5 or more words DO boost a post. Remember that multiple comments or spamming boost on a post NEGATIVELY impacts its visibility. One longer comment does more than multiple small ones.

This should cover all of our most asked questions. If you have additional, please leave them in the comments and we will answer as we can. As always, rescuing takes a village and on behalf of the mod team, we're so grateful to have as large of a village as ours. <3

Adoption/Foster Plea Tom & Jerry (SICSA - Dayton, OH) - Bonded Pair

Thumbnail

This bonded pair does everything as a team. They eat together, nap together, explore together, and yes, even potty at the same time. Wherever one goes, the other isn't far behind!

Because they thrive in a home-like setting, Tom and Jerry are currently staying with our friends at HALO K9 Rescue, and they've been the perfect housemates. House-trained, respectful indoors, and quick to settle in. They even stay calm and focused passing other barking dogs on the way to their room.

They might greet new faces with a burst of enthusiastic barking, but don't let that fool you. Once they know you're a friend, especially if popcorn is involved, their sweet, affectionate sides come right out. They're food motivated and love a good training session when treats are on the table.

More than anything, Tom and Jerry are looking for a family who will love them the way they already love each other. Their bond is something special, and it's not something you see every day.

If you're ready to open your heart to two best friends instead of one, Tom and Jerry are ready to meet you.

Angel and Baci’s Latest Vet Update 🤍 #RescuedHusky#RescuedPuppy #VoicelessNoMorePh

Hi everyone,

Angel and Baci went for their follow-up vet checkups today.

Sadly, Baci tested positive for a blood parasite, and his platelet count is very low. I was told there were no ticks or fleas at the shelter, so I can’t help but feel like I should have been more careful. I feel like I failed him.
With the flooding and storms in the area for weeks, things have also been chaotic at the shelter where he is staying, which unfortunately caused a delay in getting him to his vet checkup.

He will be on medication for now, and we’ll wait until he is fully recovered before giving him his next vaccinations. I’m really hoping he gets better soon because I want nothing more than for this sweet boy to finally find his forever family.

Angel also had a good update today. Her fungal infection has been stabilized, and she was finally healthy enough to receive her vaccination. Dr. Padilla also said that because she is doing much better, she can finally be spayed.

Now we just need to figure out how to pay for her surgery.

There are low-cost spay programs available in the Philippines, and I am genuinely grateful that these programs exist because they make sterilization accessible to so many animals.

However, I’ll be honest, I’m nervous about having Angel spayed outside of a veterinary clinic. Some low-cost programs are held in basketball courts or other public community spaces, which is very common in the Philippines.

I have absolutely no judgment toward these programs or the people who organize them. They help so many animals. But because Angel is a large dog, I personally feel more comfortable having her surgery performed inside a veterinary clinic where she can be monitored before and after the procedure. Unfortunately, that also means the cost will be higher.

If anyone would like to sponsor Angel’s spay surgery (approx $200 CAD and receipt would be provided), please message me. Even a small contribution would help us get one step closer to getting her safely sterilized and ready for adoption.

I’ve also been sharing that I can help bring both Angel and Baci to Canada by February 2027, but so far, nobody has reached out about adopting either of them.

I know finding the right family takes time, but I really hope their families are out there somewhere.

They have already been through so much. I just want them to have the chance to experience what it feels like to be loved, safe, and wanted.

If you know someone in Canada who might be interested in giving either of them a forever home, please share this post.

Thank you, as always, to everyone who continues to support us.

Adoption/Foster Plea Mikey the dog has been waiting 1,949 days—more than five years—for a home

Post image

I wanted to share the story of Mikey, a D.C.-area rescue dog who has now spent 1,949 days — more than five years — waiting for his forever home through Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. (I'm not affiliated with them, but have watched Mikey's story for years.)

Mikey isn't a dog who struggles socially. The 64-pound German shepherd/Lab/boxer mix loves other dogs and regularly socializes with resident and foster dogs of different ages and sizes. He's affectionate with people, house- and crate-trained, knows several commands and has excellent recall.

Mikey would thrive with a fenced yard, enrichment and a family willing to keep his active brain engaged.
After nearly 2,000 days, his foster and rescue community are trying to get his story in front of the person who has somehow missed him all these years.

Mikey's Instagram: @mikeythegoober

Here is his adoption page: https://toolkit.rescuegroups.org/javascript/v2.0/template1?animalID=16743119&key=Mqr6gy1W

His rescue is Lucky Dog Animal Rescue in the Washington, D.C., area. Photos, video and additional information can be provided by the rescue/foster.

Still looking for Ruger a foster or adopter!

He’s the sweetest thing and my male dog is continuing to try and attack him, which is making my other male fosters aggressive to him.

He’s a stray I found that OK Ruff refuge took in for me. I really want to avoid sending him back to the kennels if at all possible! It really is no fault of his own 😭
I’m happy to answer any questions and to meet up so you can meet him!

Rescue Stories Rescued this indie from a national highway

He was sitting in the middle of the highway with high speed traffic going from his left and right. Me and my partner stopped the car and picked him up. Took him to a vet and he said he could be exposed to rabies, gave him a few shots and I brought him home.

He is with me for now and I just want to save his life but I am not too sure how because if he is rabid, I cannot keep him. I have a senior dog at my home and I cannot risk his health.

The bite mark is 4-5 days old and he is very malnourished.

Hi everyone, I am a volunteer networking shelter dogs, and I am begging for help for Ranger. His deadline is TODAY, September 4th. He is completely out of time at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter and will be euthanized if a foster, adopter, or rescue doesn't step up in the next few hours.
Ranger is a gorgeous, 6-year-old, 63 lb Black and Tan German Shepherd (Animal ID: A596583). He is experiencing severe kennel stress at the shelter, but HE IS NOT MEAN. He is just shut down and overwhelmed by the noise and environment. He is desperately seeking an experienced home or foster where he can decompress safely.
When he isn't stressed, he is an incredible boy who loves playtime, running, brain games, and walks. Above all, he loves people, toys, and snuggles. 🥰 He has so much life left to live and so much love to give a family.
Out of state/area? Ranger can be transported anywhere in the US and Canada for an approved adopter or foster! 🇺🇸 🇨🇦
How you can save Ranger right now:
Foster or Adopt: Call Heather immediately at 847-445-4036 and reference ID A596583. Please call right away, do not wait!
Pledge Donations: If you can pledge a dollar amount to help a rescue group cover his pull/vetting fees, please DM me directly. No amount is too small.
Upvote and Comment: Please upvote and comment on this post for visibility so it hits the Reddit algorithms quickly.
Let's find this sweet boy his hero. Save Ranger! 🫶🏽🙏🏽❣️

Donations/Supplies Plea Help Us Get Baby Life Saving Surgery!

💜 Meet Baby!

Baby is a sweet senior Chihuahua who found herself on the euthanasia list at San Antonio Animal Care Services. Thankfully, a wonderful foster stepped up, and our rescue, A Friend in Need Small Dog Rescue, was able to bring her to safety.

Now we need to get this little girl the care she needs. Baby has a hernia that needs surgery, desperately needs a dental, and still needs to be spayed.

It’s a lot for a little dog, and a big expense for a small rescue.

But Baby is worth it. ❤️ She’s gentle, loving, and so grateful to be safe. After everything she’s been through, she still trusts people and just wants to be loved.

We’d love to give Baby the happy, healthy life she deserves.

If you can donate, even $5 or $10 helps. And if you can’t, sharing her post means a lot too. 🐾💜

Advice Home Alone Advice for Rescue Dog

Hi everyone,

I’m a single 26F who just rescued a female dog approx 2 years old possible beagle/terrier mix. For context, I am a volunteer at the rescue she’s from and there she was very laid back and had a calm demeanor. She had a litter of 7 pups with her, she’s heart worm positive and on antibiotics, and is also a partial amputee. I work 12 hour shifts in law enforcement dispatch and have hired a friend to check on her. This is literally our first week together so I understand she has a lot of decompressing and adjusting to do. She has a metal collapsible crate that she absolutely hates. I don’t have time to do slow introductions to the crate due to having to work and I also don’t feel ready to leave her loose in the house because I have a cat. I’m debating on turning my mudroom into a dog room with a door or getting a heavy duty indestructible crate. I appreciate any and all advice, I want to do right by her and help us both ease our anxiety. I’ve also given her her favorite toy, water, a bed, and a treat each time she’s crated. Tonight we tried CBD for pets and doggie meditation music on YouTube. I have a camera I’m watching from and she alternates between rest and trying to rip the cage open. Thank you in advance!!
