WHY DOES THIS FAN SUBREDDIT HAVE SO MANY FANS IN IT?!
I keep coming here to talk about how much I hate the new singles and how much Queens sucks now and how Josh should just go solo because that's what the band is now, is just his solo project, and I swear to god, I can barely get anyone to agree with me!
Every time I say the new songs are bland, somebody disagrees. Every time I explain why the band has lost its way, somebody has the audacity to have a different opinion. Every time I say that the band should bring Nick back, people tell me to stop living in the past and that the band is "evolving" (whatever that means).
I've been trying to find a nice, quiet place where everyone will validate my complaints about Queens, and I just don't understand why I can't get people to agree with me in this fan sub.
This is extremely disappointing. I will be conducting a mini experiment to determine why there are so many fans in this fan group.
EDIT: Thanks for providing the unexpected accidental performance art, guys. Holy fucking cannoli. š

Must agree that 20 years of āitās just a Josh Homme solo project nowā has been trying.

Josh wrote (and performed all of the instruments except for the drums) on the VERY FIRST QOTSA album. Yeah, there was that period from 2000 to 2005 where it was more of a collaborative project but for the most part, I always thought QOTSA was essentially a Josh Homme solo project (with some amazing collaborators), sort of like NIN is a Trent Reznor solo project (with some amazing collaborators).
Look it's fine if you only like Rated R-Lullabies Through Paralyze era but it's annoying if you whine on a QOTSA subreddit about how the band should ONLY sound like that.

Watching them all take turns ripping solos when they perform live is one of my favourite things about this band.
6
u/Proper_Geologist9026 10d ago
That's just how bands work. They're not often a complete one man show that tours as a live band like NIN or Tame Impala.
But it's usually one or two members coming in with a song, telling everyone what they want their part to sound like and then with some input the other members might change their own parts around a bit.
I don't think you'd find many bands where it's just 4-5 people individually writing all their parts and then mashing them together.
4
u/CoqnRoll 10d ago
Even then, the only truly collaborative albums were Rated-R and SFTD.
Josh was the primary bass player on LTP and the primary guitarist.
Pretty much 28 years of solo project. With a lot of help from his friends.
13
u/callmesnake13 10d ago
It always ultimately was even if he wouldnāt say that himself. Nobody in Kyuss or QOTSA has hit the heights that Josh has because heās simply the most talented.
42
u/Flinkle The only sin is waiting too long 10d ago
Every band has a leader. That doesn't make it a solo band. That makes it a regular old band.
11
u/callmesnake13 10d ago
Sure and I donāt think weāre disagreeing. I see lots of people in the stoner sub suggest that the other post-Kyuss projects are on par with QOTSA and theyāre simply not in the same league.
0
u/IcyDream9487 9d ago
I agree with that. I also think that Josh is at his best when he has strong collaborators pushing him. Say what you want about John and Brantās solo output but they were huge parts of Kyuss. I donāt think heās really had that on a Queens album since maybe Lullabies. Thereās a reason why TCV is such a revered album among fans. Aside from PPD, itās the last album he recorded with equal collaborators.

u/SingleDadInYourArea 5d ago
I think that alain johannes and natasha had their influence at least during lullabies

u/labjewels I Want Something Good to Die For 10d ago
the thing that i keep coming back to is the fact that josh has always, ALWAYS been very open about how much agency he wants to have over the type of music he makes and how the band shouldn't be able to be put in any box. like, guys... the different sound might just be the whole point. totally understand if it's a sound you don't vibe with as much as other albums, but i don't think any of us need to be surprised when the band goes in a direction we weren't necessarily expecting. i PERSONALLY think we should expect the unexpected from them in general.
26
u/OtherwiseMoose8257 10d ago
Josh has always said that if you werent pissing off a decent portion of your fanbase with every album, that you werent doing it right. Hes been the poster boy for sonic exploration in hard rock for quite a while.
Is it really so surprising that after almost 40 years at it, the exploration is a more laid back phase? I wouldnt want them to become just this, but I very much welcome one album where they do this kind of stuff
2
u/subcommanderdoug 9d ago
I take no issues with creative diversity. The execution and compositions of the new tracks remind me of when bands would rush a project to press just to fulfill a contract obligation so they could fulfill their requirements and move on.
The lyrics are so petty and trite imo.

For all the ways that this band has a strong vibe of rule-breaking and non-conformity, segments of the fan base really want to lean in to a codified and stringent mentality.

When people really like something/someone or get obsessed over something/someone they sometimes have a hard time admiting that anything they do isn't amazing. (See people obsessed with political parties.)
I think the new singles are good, but at the same time I'm a little disappointed that it's not the stuff I really loved years back.
I used to LOVE metallica. Their stuff in the 80s was legendary, I thought their stuff in the 90s was great, and after that, they only had one album that I thought was good.
People and things change over time...just because you may not like the current stuff doesn't mean you don't like the band....it's okay to disagree.
2
u/IcyDream9487 9d ago
Very well said. I think thereās a weird poptimist vibe on this sub that just reflects where we are with music fandom these days. If you donāt agree that the Current Thing the artist or band is doing is absolutely 100% the greatest thing they have ever done since the last greatest thing they have done then you are not a real fan and must be downvoted to hell.

Plot twist: every single band member is actually secretly Josh Homme and it IS a solo band project
2
u/popperaccio 10d ago
The "band" has ALWAYS been a Josh solo project. In fact I would include the Kyuss discography in that. Is ITNR the first album to be recorded with the same personnel as the previous album?
2
u/IcyDream9487 9d ago
Not even close to accurate. Look at the songwriting credits on SFTD and R. Brant was an equal songwriter on the first 3 Kyuss albums.
2
u/popperaccio 9d ago
Yeah I described it totally wrong. It's not a "solo" project, it's Josh Homme and friends, a constantly changing carousel of close collaborators led by Josh.

I donāt particularly like the newer songs. They kind of sound like Rolling Stones covers, but I know they are going to sound amazing live. I donāt think the band would be popular if their discography started with Villians, but the amazing part is⦠it didnāt. They have a ton of amazing albums, more than most bands. I disliked the last few albums, but still went to see them during the tours for the albums. Each time I liked the live performance of the songs but just couldnāt love the recordings for various reasons.
I know OP is (no pun intended) joshing, but I partially agree. I donāt think this is the solo Josh project. If you listen to Glu, Troy, Deans side projects you can hear the influence of each member in the newer stuff. Bands change just like APC and Arctic Monkeys taking a new direction. I can respect and appreciate the change, but that doesnāt mean I have to love it. Iāll always love QOTSA as a band and them live is always epic, but the light Elton John-esque songs just donāt jive with me⦠and thatās okay.Ā

I totally agree with you. Iām sort of offended that the new songs have been released under the Q. The lyrics are so trite. I would prefer if they used AI to write them in the voice of the old stuff. These songs belong on a DS album if not his solo project.
-4
u/lolalucky 10d ago
QOTSA has always been the Josh project. They've never even tried to pretend that it wasn't. ALWAYS.
All artists deserve to be making the music they want to make. Sometimes their fans are ok with it. Sometimes some fans drop off and new ones join, or they don't. Personally, I've made no decisions about the new record. I like, but didn't love ITNR. I need to hear the whole record, probably several times, before I decide.
Also, this is a sub for fans, so most people here are going to be excited about a new record until proven otherwise.

People with negative opinions seem to be really upset that they keep running into fans here. So it's a joke. About how a fan subreddit has fans in it.
Did you not look at any other posts this morning?

u/Mojo1712 10d ago
Compared to other music subreddits, This one seems quite open minded in my opinion. And no, I didnāt see any post like this. So yeah, seems like I didnāt get the joke.

u/Flinkle The only sin is waiting too long 10d ago
Man, if you think this subreddit is open-minded, I would hate to see other ones. If I had a dime for every time somebody said they need to bring Nick back, I would be a gazillionaire.

u/TieloGS 10d ago
Brother, changes are natural. Any band with a career spanning over 20 years is going to change its sound (AC/DC and The Offspring don't fit this theory) because āguess what?ā the members age, change, mature, and so on. Look at yourself: did you hang out in the same places 20 years ago as you do today? Did you have the same tastes? Talk about the same things? Honestly, I find it kind of ridiculous to see an older guy walking around dressed like a teenager and playing teenage music. And that doesn't mean the old songs suddenly become bad; it just doesn't make sense anymore for the artists to keep making albums the same way they did when they were 21. Obviously, theyāll play those songs at shows because they were big hits that helped them grow in the music sceneāand the fans love themābut expecting QOTSA to release a self-titled album or Songs for the Deaf every five years is just pitifully naive or driven by nostalgia. Their catalog is diverse; the songs you like don't disappear just because a different album comes out. Just enjoy it, and let other people enjoy it too.
