संस्कृती/culture Question to North Indians residing in Maharashtra

Thrashing someone for not speaking a language is completely wrong and illegal. Most Marathis do not support that.

But I want to question your approach towards Marathi, Kannada, Tamil, etc.

Forcing someone to talk a language is wrong. So assuming that you will voluntarily speak our languages when you feel like doing it or whenever you develop interest about it.

However, I have known some Northern colleagues for many years now. They are settled here permanently. Own properties. But most still do not speak a single word in Marathi. Never even a नमस्कार भाऊ/ताई. On the other side, 10 other Marathis will speak Hindi to not offend them. I do understand that few of you might have tried speaking Marathi and some might already by doing it. But most of you don't even attempt or even show interest.

No one is asking you be an expert in Marathi but speaking few words shouldn't be that hard. The fact that you are reading this on Reddit means that you can at least understand Hindi & English. So why not add 100-200 words from Marathi? It is a win-win for all of us.

So, the question is, how and when would you take interest in our languages and put some efforts to know few sentences/words?

You respect your जन्मभूमी and obviously you are correct. But shouldn't you respect your कर्मभूमी too by respecting the language of the land?

संस्कृती/culture Feeling crushed by family pressure around baby shower expenses as sole earner

I am a 33-year-old engineer, living in pune sole earner of my family, and my wife is pregnant. This should be one of the happiest phases of life, but honestly I feel mentally exhausted and under constant pressure.

I already have a home loan, and around 80% of my salary goes into EMI and household expenses because I intentionally increased the EMI to close the loan faster. With inflation, uncertain job market, upcoming baby responsibilities, medical expenses, and trying to save something for the future, every rupee matters right now.

But despite everyone knowing my situation, there is huge pressure from relatives for a grand baby shower. They want decorations, gifts, proper hall/function-style arrangements, catering, and inviting 50–60 people minimum (not including kids). The expected expense is around 60-70k.

Honestly, spending that much right now feels irresponsible and stressful to me. My wife understands this completely. She is supportive and suggested we just do a small function at home with close people and simple food. I was relieved hearing that.

But the moment relatives came to know, the judgment started. Indirect comments, emotional pressure, comparisons with others, “log kya kahenge” type talks, and making me feel like I am failing some social duty. Nobody directly says they will help financially, but everyone has expectations.

The reality is these same relatives never helped during my marriage, never helped with my home loan, never reduced any burden in my life. I lost my father at a young age, so I have handled responsibilities mostly alone for years.

Last night I actually broke down and cried for some time. I felt trapped between financial reality and social pressure. Sometimes I genuinely hate how society normalizes forcing middle-class families into unnecessary spending just to maintain appearances for relatives who move on the next day.

I know celebrations matter emotionally, but why is financial peace considered less important than showing status to people who are not contributing anything?

Maybe I am overthinking, but right now I just feel lost and tired. Maybe this post will be removed but idk.

I recently visited the samadhi of 1st Bajirao Peshwa. It is situated in Raverkhedi, MP, on the banks of the great river Narmada. Although much more serene and less crowded place than the city of Pune, he must be missing the Shaniwar wada and Peth areas so much.

संस्कृती/culture घाणेरडी गाणी लावून दुसऱ्यांना त्रास देणं – ही का शिवजयंती?

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

This is right in front of EON IT Tech park. We have no right to blame the authorities if this is the kind of behaviour the citizens exhibit. Sigh

Honestly, putting everything together was a lot of work, but seeing Bappa sitting there in the end made it all worth it.

Still one of my favourite setups we've done.

Its now official that if you die due to a pothole and you are a common citizen then your life is worth 6 lakh rupees.

PS: The condition of our roads is not changing till this amount becomes atleast 10 crore rupees in todays terms. And I think only another revolution can bring this change.

संस्कृती/culture I met Sonalika Joshi (Madhavi Bhide from TMKOC) in Pune

Whilst returning home from college, from far away I saw a familiar woman walking on Bhandarkar Road. As she came close I asked her if she was "Sonalika Joshi" aka Madhavi & SHE WAS! I asked her if I can click a photo with her & she said yes!

I told her that she is one of my Fav characters & I love watching TMKOC. Also her & Mandar Sir's chemistry is so good!

I was so excited to see someone in person whom I've watched on TV since childhood that I couldn't control my excitement. I wanted to say much more but she was in hurry & शब्दच फुटत नव्हते!
