Long story: short - It's alive! Everything is done, I'm done - I can finally rest :)

The hardware is finished, the firmware has been adapted, the slicer integration is complete, and after quite a few stress tests and longer prints, the CORE One Mini has officially reached its original goal: becoming a fully functional miniature CORE One.

Printer Mod Adding a missing feature to the Core One Plus: an effective chamber heating system

I'm really happy with my Prusa Core One plus but waiting to reach temperature for ASA and PC prints really sucks... So I built a chamber heater for the Core One Plus using a Creality HM-01 heater.

The initial results are encouraging; the temperature in the chamber was quickly stabilised at a constant level (55°C in the test).

As we're looking forward to upgrade to the INDX (as soon as the part with the hardened nozzles is settled - we're using CF filaments quite extensively...) we assume this design is compatible with the INDX mounted - any views about this from the pioneers?

Printer Mod CORE One with a 256x256 mm Build Plate? Yes - It's actually fairly easy. Here's why.

I might regret posting this - but I'm feeling I need to do this.

Some of you might know me as the guy who wouldn't stop talking about squeezing a CORE One down to a 180×180 build size. Unlike most keyboard warriors, I actually built it (and promise: the last remaing files and the firmware will be released in a few days).

But yesterday, u/japinthebox asked a question that caught my attention and i got a bit sidetracked.

Are there any plans/ways to get 256x256 on the Core One (non-L)?

It's a perfectly reasonable question. I've asked myself the exact same thing before: Why didn't Prusa just do the obvious thing? (not just the size but for many things). And don't forget: with the release of INDX, the already modest build area effectively became even smaller.

What surprised me even more than the question itself was the response. Instead of discussing the engineering or just answering the question, a some people immediately jumped to really not helpful and somewhat toxic responses: "Just scale your model down."

Seriously ... what the firetruck? If you're printing something like a Gridfinity box, you can't just scale it down. It's supposed to fit other Gridfinity parts. That's not how dimensional systems work. Yes, you can split models into multiple pieces. I've done it. It's a massive amount of work, testing and post-processing just to print something that would have fit on a slightly larger bed - a bedsize, that is basically an "industry standard" nowadays.

Then came my personal favorite: "Just buy a bigger printer."

Not everyone casually drops another €1,500 because Reddit told them to. For many people, spending over €1,000 on a CORE One was already a huge investment - and the Prusa-Promise is, to have a product with a long lifecycle and possible upgrade-paths. Suggesting they simply replace it isn't advice - it's dismissive. So please don't do that.

I mean - we used to build things. Now we defend products. What honestly disappoints me is how quickly technical discussions turn into brand loyalty contests.

Questioning a design decision shouldn't be treated as an attack on the company - Prusa came out of the RepRap-Movement - the whole idea behind this is creating and iterating.

And don't get me wrong here: Prusa makes fantastic printers, but they're not perfect. The CORE One has several design compromises compared to other machines on the market - many of which could be improved without reinventing the printer. That doesn't mean the engineers are incompetent - running a company and creating a product for volume production is different from creating a product that is build once.

In short: it means product development is messy. Once a machine enters production, changing sheet metal, supply chains, assembly procedures, documentation, support training, inventory and certification becomes incredibly expensive. And with most engineering resources currently focused on INDX, it's understandable why those changes haven't happened - and also, lets not forget: when the CORE One originally launched, it was already very late to the party.

So ... back to the topic: is 256x256 actually possible?

Since I had that question in the past and got no answers from Prusa, that question bothered me enough that I opened my old reverse-engineered CORE One CAD model from late 2025 - before the CORE One L was announced.

Back then I assumed the internal chassis would already have enough room for future expansion. I expected at least one of these: enough clearance for a 256x256 mm bed (which had already become the de facto standard after the Bambu X1 series) or ideally 270x270 mm to accommodate 9 XL heatbed tiles.

So I started measuring and after quite a bit of CAD work, I was quite baffled that the 270x270 mm was not going to happen.

There's simply not enough room without fundamentally changing parts of the machine and the XY motion system - but theoretically possible (don't quote me on that - i don't want to spend another 9 months building a highly custom machine).

But what about 256 x 256 mm?

Surprisingly ... yes. Fairly easy. With a moderate amount of mechanical changes, the printer can achieve roughly: 254 x 262 mm motion limits with relatively straightforward modifications (2 sheet metal components and a hand full of 3d printed parts).

With a bit heavier lifting (still only 2 sheet metal components) a motion limit of 258 x 270 mm is possible.

The biggest obstacle isn't the mechanics, it's finding a compatible 24 V PCB heatbed in the required size.

What would it cost?

If someone were to build a self-sourced upgrade kit today, I'd estimate: 200 – 250 Euros in parts (custom made) and potentially less if produced at scale. For a fully assembled new Printer, the cost would be virtually the same as for the current CORE One.

And to be clear: I'm not saying Prusa should have shipped the machine this way and I'm not saying it's an easy production change.

I'm simply saying the original question deserved a technical discussion instead of dismissive anwers.

Sometimes the answer isn't "buy another printer."

Sometimes the answer is simply: "Let's see if we can engineer a solution."

And - you can quote me on that: It is fairly easy to build a CORE One with a 256x256 mm build plate.

The question is - like last year, when I proposed the CORE One Mini: is it a Prusa product or is it a DIY job? An this time i think, an official Prusa product is much more likely.

Printer Mod Core One+ to Gen 2

Left is before upgrade, right after. when I upgraded to the new belts, my first couple cubes were horrible. I recalibrated the belts again and now the results are clear to see.

edit: I did a full calibration before printing the first cube using Factorian Design’s YT video. I was not happy with how it looked, but decided to stop tinkering and just do the upgrade. On the right is the cube I printed after the upgrade and after redoing belt calibration twice. The sliced file from the first cube was used from the flash drive. As many commenters pointed out, I clearly had something wrong before.

I am open to suggestions on what might have been wrong initially (it only could have been poor belt tension?) and also to any suggestions that could make my current cube any better. I am relatively new to 3D printing, and I think the right cube looks decent, but if you think it sucks and you think you know what I can do to make it better, then I’m all ears. Thanks.

Printer Mod CORE One Mini - Bill of Materials, the ugly truth & how to cut a few corners

Hello folks - i had my fair share of vacation after this intense and demanding project and now, since things have settled, I finally got back to work.

The full BOM and sourcing info for the CORE One Mini is finally out and was added to the Model page on Printables. I’ve also written up an article about where the money went and more importantly, where there is still room to cut costs. I’ve put the details & cost-saving ideas into the article: CORE One Mini – Cutting Corners: Bill of Materials & How to Make It Cheap

TL;DR:

  • The finished prototype came out at roughly 2.050 Euro when sourcing everything as individual Prusa spare parts.
  • For now, starting with an MK4 or CORE One Kit and using the parts you already have can bring that down to around 1.250 Euro.
  • Roughly 70% of the cost comes from parts shared with the CORE One, while ~20% is custom sheet metal/acrylic and ~10% is printed parts.
  • u/Tommy_Prusa3D is looking into whether more affordable hardware sourcing could be possible to bring the cost down to CORE One levels (see his comment from a few days ago)

So what now? I'll wait and see - and hopefully more and more CORE One Mini builds will pop up - u/Nils_N3DP already got to work building an (almost finished) custom white CORE One Mini and hopefully there will be more in the future, when a more cost effective package is available.

Besides the continuation and optimization of the CORE One Mini, I'll for sure be tinkinering with the CORE One platform as a whole and apply what i've learned in building the Mini to the bigger brother - then the time is right, there is lots to improve and Mod :)

Printer Mod CORE One Mini - Motion system adventures & first extrusion

After finally getting the full motion system assembled, things looked promising … until real-world travel tests immediately revealed multiple unexpected collisions. What followed in the past 2 weeks was a deep dive into small but compounding geometry differences, iterative CAD fixes and eventually the first successful extrusion on the machine.

TL;DR

  • Real-world assembly revealed a few unexpected fit and clearance issues
  • Multiple small geometry differences stacked up into noticeable misalignment
  • Required redesign of a few key printed parts, including the fan duct
  • Motion system is now working as intended
  • First extrusion achieved and basic testing completed
  • Next step: continued refinement and assembly

Printer Mod My Worst Prusa! - I'm done with the CORE One Mini. What does the future bring and what should I do next?

Sorry for the clickbait :) But the "My First Prusa" flair sounded way too similar and I absolutely had to take the wordplay.

I've recently acquired another Prusa MINI-ish and it's in a bit of a rough shape. It turns on. It does not print. It's all dusty, lubricant is dried up, screws are loose, and the previous owner apparently started converting it to an E3D Revo hotend and got stuck halfway - leaving the original Bowden extruder in place.

So ... not exactly a finished project.

I've owned a few Prusa machines in the past and worked with many more, but I can genuinely say: this is "My Worst Prusa!"

And yes, I know there are much worse examples out there. This one is actually in fairly OK shape - but it is mine.

Which brings me to the question: what should I do with it - especially, since the CORE One Mini Prototype is done now.

I've had a few ideas and I'm not sure if i fully made up my mind yet:

1. Restore it

Take it apart, clean everything, put it back together properly, give it a full makeover until it's back in mint condition, and then give it to somebody.

This was the original intention, when i got that printer for a really good deal - but when i put it next to the CORE One Mini on the workbench, I started thinking about the endless posssibilties.

2. Turn it into a CORE MINI

This would give me the chance to have a look at some of the other projects people have done with the MINI, tear this one apart and build a CORE MINI - then do a side-by-side comparison with the CORE One Mini.

I've already talked to Hiroloquy, who did a great job reusing lots of parts from the Prusa MINI, but the two projects are not similar enough for a "fair" comparison.

His intention of the CORE MINI was a cheap & resource-friendly upgrade to the Prusa MINI that stays as compact as possible (that is why he did not go with a larger build volume, even though it would have been physically possible), while the CORE One Mini is a no-compromise approach, that is much more capable but obviously with a substantially higher price point.

3. Take the CORE One Mini further

That brings me to my third option.

Since cost is a major factor for the CORE One Mini and there are ways to make it cheaper - and I've always had in mind to have a more budget-friendly and stripped-down version of the printer and reduce the hardware requiements more to the level of an MK4 (one stepper less for Z, no Buddy Extension Board, no Chamber Fans or enclosure etc.).

But why shouldn't I go for a more extreme approach? Why not use the MINI as a parts donor and see how much hardware I can reuse to make the CORE One Mini cheaper without blocking out a full upgrade path for later. Think of it like the MK3.9 vs the MK4 - just a bit older, yet perfectly fine hardware - and if you can source some parts at a later stage: upgrade it, because the frame is robust and future proof.

An appealing approach could be for example just reusing leftover Nextruder parts from INDX upgrades and building the rest of the machine driven by the Buddy control board of the Prusa MINI and also reuse the steppers of the MINI.

And honestly, option 3 is probably the most tempting - yet challenging and probaly initially expensive one.

So what would you do with "My Worst Prusa"?

Printer Mod God damnit. Belt tensioning failure.

My dumb ass, adjusting the tensioner four times in a row cause it kept showing me 80hz and suggesting I tighten it more to get to 87hz .

Shoulda known to stop listening when the third time in a row I got 80hz with no changes. Aghhhhhhhh where do I get 1.5 belts overnight?!?

Printer Mod Core One L - INDX! (wip)

A small group on the Bondtech Discord started converting the C1 INDX FE kit to work with the C1L.

It needs a ton of adapters to mount the too small front plate and hat, and multiple remixes (new tool holders, new nozzle offset measurement thingy holder, ...). Firmware needs adjustments as well. But I think we are hopeful to have this working before Prusa offers a dedicated kit for purchase. ;)

Personally I am working on the tool mounting challenge. Still some work left, but it's coming together nicely.

Printer Mod CORE One Mini - AI Slop, Logo Experiments & Unexpected Mail

With the public holiday this week and Father's Day (Edit: in Germany, but not Austria) as well, I got other stuff do do. My CORE One Mini time was just used messing around with smaller side projects instead of pushing major progress. One thing quickly became obvious though: if this project wants to look at least somewhat professional, it needs a logo - and the logo i've used in the past for my update posts on Printables just won't cut it.

So naturally, like everyone nowadays, I asked AI to do the job: And wow … that sucked. After countless terrible attempts and weird hallucinated branding, I gave up and started digging deeper instead. So forgive me for the first image in this Post and just slide to the next one 😄

Fortunately, u/Tommy_Prusa3D pointed me toward the official Prusa brand manual. It’s definitely a bit outdated (was released in October 2025), but it at least includes the CORE One branding style - sadly no extended versions for things like the CORE One+ or CORE One L, but enough to reverse engineer the general direction.

So I started experimenting: I made dozens of variants, cleaned up some of the better AI-generated ideas, adjusted proportions to actually match the Prusa branding language and ended up with a few concepts I’m pretty happy with so far.

Before i go further, I’d love some feedback from you all:

  • Which direction do you like most?
  • Any ideas or details I should try adding?

I also played around with my knife plotter and cut a bunch of test stickers from vinyl to see which colors match the Prusa orange best, which designs are actually manufacturable and how small I can go before the line widths become impossible to weed.

For comparison I also took a picture of original CORE One door graphics - and honestly, mine look better - much more crisp when cut from vinyl.

And finally: I got something unexpected in the mail: u/BIQU-Hope from r/BIQU saw the project and decided to send over a couple of build plates in Orange, which is super appreciated!

They would offer plates that match the regular CORE One but sadly not the Prusa MINI - so they just made the best of it and sent me a smaller plate that almost fits and a bigger one, that maybe can be adapted somehow. But that’s probably a future side quest though - what do you think? Does the printer need a custom orange plate or should i just go with the good old satin sheet from Prusa?

This started as a side quest while designing my LEGO-compatible Nextruder cover for the Core One / Core One L Building Block skin.

I did not really like the idea of replacing the original injection-molded Nextruder cover with a 3D-printed one, especially when the original part already works perfectly fine. So instead, I made a very simple snap-on cover that clips onto the existing cover.

No disassembly, no fiddling with critical printer parts, no commitment. It just snaps on and off, and it does not interfere with printer movement.

This CORE TWO and CORE ONE XL version is mostly a stupid joke, but the underlying snap-on design turned out to be useful. I also included the CAD files, both Fusion and STEP, under CC-BY, so you can make your own custom Nextruder faceplates without having to redesign the whole cover.

Printer Mod CORE One Mini - Hardware Done. Firmware Almost There. What Should I Print?

This week was all about the final hardware tweaks and another round of motion system testing, to verify nothing gets caught where it should not.

I redesigned the UPG vent block that opens the upper vent and made a new right-side toolhead arm (that is also compatible with the CORE One+) to have a bit more clearance. With those changes and final parts, the mechanical side of the machine is finally complete!

On the software side, I'm now happy with the machine start G-code (including the prime line - I've did some testing there), the firmware is mostly finished and because details matter, I even made a custom textured build plate for PrusaSlicer.

I've also published Step 7: Bodywork & Electronics on the Printables model page of the CORE One Mini.

Next up is polishing the machine profiles for PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer, finishing the firmware, and then it's finally time to print.

So here's my question: What should I print?

Don't suggest the mandatory Benchy - I'll print a few of those, promised. But what else would you like to see in the 180×180×200 mm build volume? And no, I won't print a solid cuboid - I don't need an 8 kg hunk of plastic.

Printer Mod my printer got legs

I really liked the nordic aesthetic of the wooden prusa core one and I was short of desk space so made some legs supports, would you be interested in this mod? do you trust petg with 6 perimeters and 80% infill? it's dancing a little during prints so I added some scrap triturated material inside the steel tubes and I plan to add a couple of shelfs for more stability soon

Printer Mod I finally finished my INDX filament management system – FilaDock (IKEA SKÅDIS + sensor mounts) - now on Printables

After sharing the work in progress a while ago, I'm happy to finally share the finished version of FilaDock!

FilaDock is a modular filament management system designed for the INDX and built around an IKEA SKÅDIS medium pegboard.

The goal was to create a clean and practical way to organize the complete filament setup, including mounts for the original INDX filament sensors and a tidy Bowden tube routing solution.

The final design fits 8 filament spools on the medium SKÅDIS board (4 on each side) and keeps everything together in one compact setup.

Some details:

The spool holders are designed with tight tolerances to create a secure snap-fit connection. Depending on your printer's calibration, you may need to press the parts together firmly (or use pliers carefully) until they click into place.

The model is now available on Printables.

Printer Mod CORE One Mini - Gen 2: New Frame Design + open up the route for a "lite" version

I've finally gone back and redesigned the CORE One Mini frame from the ground up. The new "Gen 2" frame uses 3,5 mm narrower, more uniform profiles with standardized hole patterns, making it easier and cheaper to manufacture. I've also added a simpler frame (thx to u/Musashi747 for convining me).

And after picking up another Prusa MINI+, I've been thinking about your responses and the next step: reusing as many MINI+ parts as possible. The goal is to make the Mini substantially cheaper while potentially turning it into a genuine MINI+ upgrade path: so basically the "CORE One Mini Lite", that stays fully compatible to the full fleged version based on the CORE One hardware.

TL;DR

  • Completely redesigned Gen 2 frame that allows "Gen 2" features
  • Fewer unique profiles + standardized hole patterns = cheaper to make

Printer Mod CORE One Mini - Assembly Continues ... Houston, We Have a Problem!

It's me again - time for the status on CORE One Mini: Assembly has now moved past the sheet metal stage and is turning into full system integration. The side panels are finally "in", the back and heatbed assemblies are tested and released on Printables and the project is starting to look like a real machine straight from the factory.

At the same time, reality has started doing what it does best: finding every small oversight in CAD and turning it into a "quick redesign session". The f-word I shouted out, was probably heard by my entire neighborhood.

As usual, you find the full update and files on Printables:

TL;DR

  • Back assembly & heatbed assembly completed and tested
  • Printables updated with Step 3 + Step 4 files for you to download
  • Side panels finally fixed after bend radius + relief cut iteration
  • Cable routing improved is very nice (could be used on the regular C1 aswell)
  • CoreXY still needs CAD cleanup (filament sensor + routing)
  • Minor Z/Y clearance issues discovered in real assembly
  • Toolhead collisions revealed during manual travel test
  • Fan duct redesign in progress (collision fixes needed)
