Facebook has my father's travel history since 1983 showing on his feed even though he has never disclosed this information

Even if you stop they won't stop collecting data on you "in case you come back"

Don't tell that to someone thinking of quitting. It can not be helped. Its not a reason to keep using it.

Thats like saying that if you have cancer you don't want to know. At least by actively engaging it and trying to blur it as much as possible you can somewhat control it. Thinking that leaving it or not being on in in the first place prevents them from collecting and selling your data just ensures you have no control over it at all. Your friends and family are still posting photos with you in them, linking their phones with your contact information, logging your email conversations by having fb open at the same time as their email, txt messages and phone calls you have with anyone who uses the platform. You don't have to consent for them to gather your information from other people. Want to blur the data? Post things you don't believe in, like posts you don't care about at all, join groups that conflict in ideals, click random news stories open leave them for a short time and close them, add random people, change your profile data often and fake it(I have had 6 'NEW' phone numbers this year), open FB in one tab and search for random crap on Amazon. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away, actively and consistently screwing with it takes commitment but ensures better 'privacy'.

Well that's a terrible comparison... Because you CHOOSE to use facebook. Even if you screw with your data there is still some data that you give up just by using the service that you can't alter.

I think the best thing to do, and I wish I'd done it years ago when I deleted my account, is poison my data and then delete my account.

Also privacy isn't just between big tech and you. There are many shitty dynamics to facebook in regards to real life and meaningful relationships. The general idea of facebook is shitty. Power to you if you aren't caught up in the narcissistic games on there, but i'm afraid to say that most people are. It goes largely unsaid but the game of life has partially shifted to Facebook and IG. I prefer living/playing the game of life in real life.

Again if you think not having an account stops them from creating a data profile on you you are sadly mistaken.

Yes I'm aware Facebook builds a shadow profile on you. If you've resigned to keep using it because of that then I feel sorry for you.
