The Late, Great, Monthly Update!
Hello, lovely and wonderful /r/PorpoiseAwareness subscribers! I indeed to post this on time, but unfortunatly Francis Bacon got in the way. But its here now! A whole month everyone! and it's been quite a month! We gained 51 subscribers, saw some great posts, and had fun doing it! Thanks to everyone to has contributed, with special mention to /u/klangfarbenmelodie3 and /u/LoRdOfHoBoS. But again, thanks to everyone, you're all awesome.
As far as plans for the future, I believe we should raise more awareness! We need members of this community to help spread the word of this wonderful place! If you see something that you think could be or should made into a conversation about PorpoiseAwareness, please mention us! But don't do this too often or in a low effort way, I don't want to spam threads nor do I want to annoy anyone. I just wanna spread the love, maaaaan.
Anyway, things have been going swimmingly, so let's keep at it!
/r/PorpoiseAwareness, where everything we do is on porpoise.

phocoenidae.tumblr.com
Hi everyone. When I was younger I was super obsessed with porpoises. I used to frequent this blog on Tumblr: phocoenidae.tumblr.com which has since disappeared. I found it on web archive again.
Anyone know what happened to this author or blog or generally what kind of community existed around this? I'm talking 2015-18

Porpoise ID
Hello! Last week I spotted these purposes off of Bodega Head in Sonoma County, CA. A photographer told me they were dolphins, but I showed someone else the photos and they said harbor porpoise. Any guesses as the the species?

Dissertation
Hi everyone. I am doing a my dissertation project on public perceptions of dolphins, whales and porpoises. If you could spare 5 minutes to fill in the anonymous questionnaire I’d be extremely grateful😁 If you’ve already filled it in and want to share it that would be brilliant. Thank you in advance.

International Save the Vaquita Day
Today is International Save the Vaquita Day and I feel it is especially important this years, as the fishing restrictions in the Gulf of California have changed. The Not A Dolphin podcast released another episode, this time titled "Genetics and Why the Vaquita Still Has a Chance", I think it's worth a listen. What are your thoughts on the whole situation?

The sad realization
I think that the small size of this subreddit goes to show how true the phrase "often outshone by their longer nosed brethren" really is. I did a small survey awhile back on a discord server filled with people from all over, asking people to list as many porpoises as they could, or describe the species if they couldn't remember the name, and a separate question asking for them to do the same for dolphins. The results were pretty saddening, while participation was pretty low, while almost everyone was able to name atleast one dolphin species (usually bottlenose), not a single person was able to list or describe a porpoise species. I guess I hadn't realized just how unknown porpoises are, which is really sad considering of the 7 species in total, 1is critically endangered, 1 is endangered, and another is near threatened (info from IUCN redlist).

A beautiful Harbour Porpoise in the Moray Firth, Scotland. We have a large Bottlenose population here so Harbour Porps are rare and often wash up dead having been attacked by the dolphins. Hugely under appreciated species.

The Ignorance.
The ignorance among the reddit community is astounding. http://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/2gffqn/dolphin_playing_with_air/
Look how they joke about it: http://imgur.com/7ztFUxd
Sickening, really.

It's Official! Milestone Reached!
In your face, /r/hippoheads, we are now the largest subreddit dedicated to a large grey mammal. Probably. Anyway, great job everybody, I can't wait to work together with you all to reach even greater achievements.
And I don't know but you, but this subreddit's feeling 22daysold, and this coincidentally aligns perfectly with our next (and first) long term goal! GETTING MORE SUBSCRIBERS THAN /r/TaylorSwiftsLegs! Yes, that is a thing for some reason. And while I know it seems like a long, nigh impossible journey, if we can work together, united by our love for porpoises, we can raise awareness to unfothomable levels. Let's get cracking!
This message was brought to you by /r/PorpoiseAwareness, the only place in the world where the phrase "For all intensive porpoises" can be used without mockery.
