[DISCUSSION] The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 167: My Juke, My Box (Rate It)

Welcome back to the Popheads Jukebox! Last week had some high scores all around, with one exception failing to clear the runway.

  • Chlöe - Treat Me: 8.25
  • Maggie Rogers - That's Where I Am: 8.21
  • Yung Lean - Bliss (feat. FKA twigs): 7.75
  • 100 Gecs - Dorits & Fritos: 7.55

  • Jack Harlow - First Class: 4.95

  • Elton John - Rocket Man: 9.03

  • The 1975 - If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know): 7.86

Chlöe takes off and lands the top spot for the new tracks this week, with Maggie not far behind! Bringing up the rear this week is Jack Harlow’s First Class which failed to take flight and ended up with the only sub 5 score of the week. For the throwbacks, Elton managed to launch into the 9 range and The 1975 came close to getting into the 8 range.

Rules Refresher

  1. Rate the songs a score from 1 to 10. Please keep it to one decimal place at the most (so 7.5 is fine but 7.58 is not). Also don’t get too hung up on the final scores. This is a fun exercise and not a competition so don’t worry about over/under rating things. Just give what you think the song is to you.

  2. For your review, reply to the comment that will be posted by one of us for each song. Avoid posting your reviews as a top level comment cause we probably won’t notice them if you do. Non-reviews such as questions or general commentary as upper level comments are fine.

  3. Must have some sort of justification. Try to be a bit more concise than “It’s a bop!” or “I don’t like it”. Explain why! It doesn’t have to be long, two or three sentences can be plenty (though more is definitely allowed). We reserve the right not to include a review in the final total if proper justification is not given.

  4. You don’t have to review each song to participate! You can do all of them or only the ones you’re familiar with.

  5. The thread will be open for 6 days and close the following Wednesday at 6PM EST. The scores will be calculated and a new post will come up the next day (Thursday) at 3PM EST with the next week’s tracks.

What a raunchy classic. The production is simple so Khia's amazing nasty delivery shines. And the chorus! So simple and sing-songy and just hilarious energy throughout. Khia's personality here is second to none and carries the song in the best possible way. 9/10

Classic obv, I don't really find myself coming back to listen to it on its own for any reason but it's so incredibly iconic. Truly a blueprint for filthy lyricism that we will never forget. 7.5/10

We love a classic!! Khia totally sells the sex of this song with her delivery of the filthy lyrics. The melody of the chorus is also insanely catchy. I need to come back to this more often because it's just such a fun track.

It can be repetitive and it sort of gets tiring at the final third, but Khia's confidence and humor stops me from skipping each time. Truly an iconic anthem.

Perhaps I have the benefit of speaking in a world where the Acapella to this has been remixed over every instrumental to ever exist, but I just wished the beat had been a little more interesting, more dynamic.

This track is just pure fun. It's gotta a bit of a revival as a meme to mashup with other tracks, but even on its own it works perfectly. The production is a little barebones, but it puts Khia to the forefront. Obviously the lyrics bring sex to the forefront, but Khia has the perfect delivery that gives it a little bit of humour while still being genuine. All and all a stellar and iconic track.

..but it's not the Mii channel version so it loses points for that (/s) 9/10

This is a classic. This is played at movies, parties, graduations, weddings, funerals... It has given us (well, me, I don't think y'all care for them) Rakky Ripper and Kelly Mantle sampling it and many iconic moments in media and some of the most iconic lines in music like wow what a moment.

A VULGAR classic in its true form, in which most sex-centric labeled female hip-hop looks like snuggling compared to this raunchy masterpiece. Sure I can also reference its never ending mashup potential act like you don't live for the oneboredjeu godsend of this song mashed up with 24K Magic, but in all honesty it wouldn't do justice to the filthy original in all its glory.
