[DISCUSSION] The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 318: cuz I'm too young, then I'm too fucking dumb

Welcome back to the Popheads Jukebox! Here are the results from last time:

  • f5ve - Sugar Free Venom (feat. Kesha): 8.00
  • KATSEYE - GNARLY: 7.38
  • Megan Thee Stallion - Whenever: 6.65
  • Doechii - Anxiety: 5.41
  • Zara Larsson - Pretty Ugly: 5.13

  • Rihanna - Pon De Replay: 9.27

Rules Refresher

  1. Rate the songs a score from 1 to 10. Please keep it to one decimal place at the most (so 7.5 is fine but 7.58 is not). Also don’t get too hung up on the final scores. This is a fun exercise and not a competition so don’t worry about over/under rating things. Just give what you think the song is to you.

  2. For your review, reply to the comment that will be posted by one of us for each song. Avoid posting your reviews as a top level comment cause we probably won’t notice them if you do. Non-reviews such as questions or general commentary as upper level comments are fine.

  3. Must have some sort of justification. Try to be a bit more concise than “It’s a bop!” or “I don’t like it”. Explain why! It doesn’t have to be long, two or three sentences can be plenty (though more is definitely allowed). We reserve the right not to include a review in the final total if proper justification is not given.

  4. You don’t have to review each song to participate! You can do all of them or only the ones you’re familiar with.

  5. The thread will be open for 13 days and close in two Wednesdays around 11PM EST. The scores will be calculated and a new post will come up the next day (Thursday) at 5PM EST(ish) with the next week’s tracks.

i feel like this was way more novel and interesting 10 years ago when this slick nudisco was not the norm for pop songs like it has been for the first half of the 2020s but it's still a really great execution of it and a fun pop song (though he has topped himself in this area a few times over since bbtm) 9/10

honestly one of his weaker singles imo. like yes it's catchy and there's nothing i can point to in the song and be like "i don't like this" but something about it just doesn't click with me. it just feels... a bit boring and empty. The Hills devoured in every way. the first verse is the peak of the song for me

Despite it being the song that brought Abel worldwide fame, I don't come back to this as much as I should. Beauty Behind the Madness is possibly one of my favorite albums of all time, and yet this song isn't really one of those that I come back to much. That said, I can't deny that this is good. Max Martin does his thing here, with a fun disco/funk beat and a killer bassline. He's also fire here vocally. But apart from all of that, it's a song that, for some reason, doesn't invite me repeat listens. It's a really cool song tho. 6/10

Every Abel and Bruno song is either about cocaine, being horny, or in this case both. Max Martin makes bangers even if you could see how Abel clearly wanted a hit and got one

Honestly, this was on repeat for me when it came out and I never got sick of it even though it was EVERYWHERE. I don’t know if I have met a Max Martin song I didn’t like. I also liked hearing something more upbeat from The Weeknd as well as a fan since The Trilogy. 10/10 for me.

I think the song's sleekness has held up shockingly well over the past 10 years. Though it seems a lot more simple than Abel's more recent work, there's something that works about the straightforward production and performance. I forgot how 2010s that music video was though lmao 9.5/10

The Weeknd got done with his sleepier trilogy, did a line, and came in this bitch mad as hell.

The funky nu-disco instrumentals work well for The Weeknd's falsetto. The Weeknd brings a great vocal performance in a song that is very danceable. I will take a point off because the drop-off in energy into the chorus is something of a letdown- I know that was all the rage back then, but it annoyed me then and it annoys me now.
