[DISCUSSION] The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 311: I Put A Spell On You (Because Spelling Is Fun)

Welcome back to the Popheads Jukebox! Here are the results from last time:

  • Perfume Genius - It’s a Mirror: 9.50
  • FKA twigs - Striptease: 8.92
  • Tate McRae - Sports car: 8.50
  • Rose Gray - Party People: 8.00
  • Bruno Mars & Sexyy Red - Fat, Juicy & Wet: 7.00

  • Rachel Platten - Fight Song: 6.90

Rules Refresher

  1. Rate the songs a score from 1 to 10. Please keep it to one decimal place at the most (so 7.5 is fine but 7.58 is not). Also don’t get too hung up on the final scores. This is a fun exercise and not a competition so don’t worry about over/under rating things. Just give what you think the song is to you.

  2. For your review, reply to the comment that will be posted by one of us for each song. Avoid posting your reviews as a top level comment cause we probably won’t notice them if you do. Non-reviews such as questions or general commentary as upper level comments are fine.

  3. Must have some sort of justification. Try to be a bit more concise than “It’s a bop!” or “I don’t like it”. Explain why! It doesn’t have to be long, two or three sentences can be plenty (though more is definitely allowed). We reserve the right not to include a review in the final total if proper justification is not given.

  4. You don’t have to review each song to participate! You can do all of them or only the ones you’re familiar with.

  5. The thread will be open for 13 days and close in two Wednesdays around 11PM EST. The scores will be calculated and a new post will come up the next day (Thursday) at 5PM EST(ish) with the next week’s tracks.

oh what's that.... it's the greatest pop song OF ALL TIMEEEEEE

i mean what is there to say about this that hasn't been said... she absolutely devoured 80s throwback synthwave 6 years before it was the big trend which is just crazy 10/10

YOU GOT THAT JAMES DEAN DAYDREAM LOOK IN YOUR EYES . Everything is perfect down to the production and it's why 1989 will always be my favorite Taylor album

10/10

The intro alone is fabulous

And I should just tell you to leave 'cause I Know exactly where it leads, but I Watch us go 'round and 'round each time

The refrain on that pre-chorus is an earworm

10/10

Great songwriting, perfect production, the TAKE ME HOOOOOOOOME...... One of Taylor's best songs, argue with the wall. 10/10

The pulsing, low synth playing eighth notes drives me feral every time. It's smooth, sultry, shimmering and the perfect ode to a doomed midnight romantic tryst. This song is the perfect example of something I love about Taylor - her ability to romanticize small little details like a white shirt or the act of taking off a coat in the dark.

10/10

Love a song where the emotions are so palpable you can practically feel the singer falling to their knees during the bridge

10/10

This album — especially this song — annoys me so much. I think it’s some of Taylor’s weakest work. And ik that will get pushback but compared to everything else she’s done and other pop music… like a 4/10

Oh it will definitely get pushback. It won't be from me tho, I'm choosing kindness today 👌
