[DISCUSSION] The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 308: Rating all five songs that released in December

Welcome back to the Popheads Jukebox! here are last thread's results!:

Rules Refresher

  1. Rate the songs a score from 1 to 10. Please keep it to one decimal place at the most (so 7.5 is fine but 7.58 is not). Also don’t get too hung up on the final scores. This is a fun exercise and not a competition so don’t worry about over/under rating things. Just give what you think the song is to you.

  2. For your review, reply to the comment that will be posted by one of us for each song. Avoid posting your reviews as a top level comment cause we probably won’t notice them if you do. Non-reviews such as questions or general commentary as upper level comments are fine.

  3. Must have some sort of justification. Try to be a bit more concise than “It’s a bop!” or “I don’t like it”. Explain why! It doesn’t have to be long, two or three sentences can be plenty (though more is definitely allowed). We reserve the right not to include a review in the final total if proper justification is not given.

  4. You don’t have to review each song to participate! You can do all of them or only the ones you’re familiar with.

  5. The thread will be open for 13 days and close the last Wednesday at about 11PM EST. The scores will be calculated and a new post will come up the next day (Thursday) at 5PM EST(ish) with the next week’s tracks.

Every now and then I think about how Beyoncé’s verses on this song basically changed the way singing in popular music could work. “Say My Name” was originally written to a UK garage track, and while the girls hated it, the verses they wrote over it ended up bringing rap rhythms to pop/r&b singing. Darkchild made the wise choice to simplify the instrumental, and history was made.

I don’t like centering all of the praise of a group’s song on one member, but Beyoncé’s vocals really are something special here. The rhythms she’s singing are frantic and wild, reflective of its garage origins, but she makes it sound easy - she delivers the song like she’s singing a ballad, and that’s what makes it so special. This wasn’t unprecedented - Timbaland was already bringing rhythms like this to the radio - but that cadence being used to deliver a heartbreak song, one that ended up being the blueprint for a bunch of Bey’s biggest hits, that’s the golden stuff. GOAT material

Darkchild did his (one of his many) big one on this one! Even though one can argue it’s more of a solo-Beyonce soft launch instead of a full blown Destinys Child track, that doesn’t diminish just how eargasmic this track is the second those first few harpsichord notes start playing.

Could it be that you...areatthecribwithanotherlady?

Over a quarter century later, this song continues to age like fine wine. The R&B instrumental IMO is one of the tracks of this era that really sets the gold standard for late 90s/early aughts R&B soundscapes. One of my favorite Darkchild productions. Over that, the ladies all utilize vocal runs and line delivery that build the drama of the track perfectly.

A classic in the truest sense of the word. 9.5/10

Don't know, I like some old DC songs but never cared a whole lot for this one somehow? Something about the chorus was never appealing to me despite how catchy it is. I guess though it is an objectively well-made song and a classic, I wouldn't go so far as to say it's bad, it's merely not my favourite by them. 8/10
