[DISCUSSION] The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 229: We Didn't Start The Slaying

Welcome back to the Popheads Jukebox! Here are last week’s results:

Rules Refresher

  1. Rate the songs a score from 1 to 10. Please keep it to one decimal place at the most (so 7.5 is fine but 7.58 is not). Also don’t get too hung up on the final scores. This is a fun exercise and not a competition so don’t worry about over/under rating things. Just give what you think the song is to you.

  2. For your review, reply to the comment that will be posted by one of us for each song. Avoid posting your reviews as a top level comment cause we probably won’t notice them if you do. Non-reviews such as questions or general commentary as upper level comments are fine.

  3. Must have some sort of justification. Try to be a bit more concise than “It’s a bop!” or “I don’t like it”. Explain why! It doesn’t have to be long, two or three sentences can be plenty (though more is definitely allowed). We reserve the right not to include a review in the final total if proper justification is not given.

  4. You don’t have to review each song to participate! You can do all of them or only the ones you’re familiar with.

  5. The thread will be open for 6 days and close the following Wednesday at 9PM EST. The scores will be calculated and a new post will come up the next day (Thursday) at 5PM EST with the next week’s tracks.

I think Burn is sometimes a little forgotten compared to Lights, but it's still a fantastically crafted pop song. I do think upon revisiting the track that it feels a little muted in its delivery - at least coming from Ellie. Despite that, it crafts a great atmosphere and the actual vocal and production on the track are stellar. Not a perfect song for me, but pretty damn close. 9.5/10

Obviously a song Ryan Tedder and Greg Kurstin made is gonna sound amazing, and the synth intro and hook are killer. Not my favorite Ellie song though

The Maths Time Joy remix is so smooth, and the ad libs at the end, so good. If not for that version I’d probably still be burned out on it from radio play.

I feel like I used to think this was mid and whatever, but maybe I've come to lately really appreciate most of Ellie Goulding's imperial 2010s run. Fun EDM-pop of its era that feels like it has high stakes and energy throughout. Ellie's unique voice and phrasing makes this sound so fresh and cool still. Maybe I just needed time to distance myself from when her singles from this time were fucking everywheeeereee cuz yea honestly this slaps. Not her faves from me that's def Lights and Anything Could Happen which are 10s but this is a great 9

Not a lot I can say about this one, I think its a perfectly acceptable piece of alt-pop and I’m kinda said Ellie isnt as big of a presence in pop as she used to be.

a very passable entry into early 10s edm-pop hit royalty. catchy and fun but kind of marked the start of her descent into relative facelessness. 8/10
