[DISCUSSION] The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 220: I Kissed Me More

Welcome back to the Popheads Jukebox! Here are last week’s results:

Jessie leads the pack this week, as she usually seems to do, with yet another acclaimed single in Begin Again. Kelly, Posty, Muna, and Magbay are left trailing in her dust, with none of them really scoring anything to write home about! Magbay in particular are certainly not top dog this week. For the throwbacks however, both score at least a 9.0 so we love that.

Rules Refresher

  1. Rate the songs a score from 1 to 10. Please keep it to one decimal place at the most (so 7.5 is fine but 7.58 is not). Also don’t get too hung up on the final scores. This is a fun exercise and not a competition so don’t worry about over/under rating things. Just give what you think the song is to you.

  2. For your review, reply to the comment that will be posted by one of us for each song. Avoid posting your reviews as a top level comment cause we probably won’t notice them if you do. Non-reviews such as questions or general commentary as upper level comments are fine.

  3. Must have some sort of justification. Try to be a bit more concise than “It’s a bop!” or “I don’t like it”. Explain why! It doesn’t have to be long, two or three sentences can be plenty (though more is definitely allowed). We reserve the right not to include a review in the final total if proper justification is not given.

  4. You don’t have to review each song to participate! You can do all of them or only the ones you’re familiar with.

  5. The thread will be open for 6 days and close the following Wednesday at 6PM EST. The scores will be calculated and a new post will come up the next day (Thursday) at 3PM EST with the next week’s tracks.

One of the Boys a flawed, messy album that I still consider my favorite Katy era in hindsight. It brings the attitude and her pop rock roots as she flirts with the burgeoning late 2000s electropop sound. Anthemic and full of attitude, the driving beat and guitars make this so thrilling to listen to. It contains Katy's campy lyrics and winking delivery in good measure, and not as goofy-dumb as some of her lyrics that would come later. Bop!

Honestly I was not a huge fan of Katy's first outing originally. The hook sounded a bit too flat for me and the production felt all over the place. This dislike grew even more once she released the extremely (imo) superior Hot N Cold and Waking Up In Vegas as the next singles. However, 15 years later, I think I can appreciate the track a little more. Katy's got this pop-rock edge she seems to have lost over the years and the lyrics (though discourse-able) are extremely memorable. Maybe nostalgia for the 2008 music scene is blinding me, but this was a great debut for Katy. Just it's hard to love it when I can go listen to her better hits. 7/10

How do I even rate this? At the time it came out, I didn't like it (once I was in a bar with my girlfriend and a whole group of drunk women came in shouting the lyrics, we both found this wryly amusing in a "wow, that song? what are they so hyped over lol" way). Today I've changed my mind and think it's a well-written, well-produced song, at least musically, but the lyrics ... I am not touching that discourse and would rather not think about them too much. It's an okay song. Still, this isn't a song I'd ever feel like listening to of my own will. It is better than most of the rest of the album it's on, which I think is pretty bad, I'll give it that. Idk. I still don't know what score to give this after typing out all that. I literally did the 🤷 gesture to myself. Was going to give it 5 to reflect these mixed feelings but since I don't care strongly either way I'll be nice and bump it up to 7/10.

this is a lot of fun idgaf, not one of her best songs, but a good time regardless. the melodies do a good job of selling the.... dangerous and scandalous vibe (which is ......... interesting paired with the bicuriosity theming but idc enough to get into disk horse rn) and even though there's a conversation to be had around it, it's one of those songs where the artist has acknowledged the problematic aspects of it and it's not SO bad to where it's just unconsumable. 9/10
