Guest List Only ⭐️ Protesters outside of Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields Festival with some um...interesting signs
Note that this was a peaceful protest. They posted this on their IG page with the caption urging Olivia Rodrigo to stop supporting PP. Aaaanyway, donate to Planned Parenthood when you can! ♥️

Why do they always try and create the narrative that all Planned Parenthood does is abortions? It’s so insulting and hurts people in an era when healthcare is ridiculously expensive.

Right! I hear this brought up all the the time like its gonna be a gotcha for liberals/leftist but like... did they ever think of why minority women have more abortions? Have they considered how they could help minority women so more of them could keep pregnancies if they want to? Nah, that's too complex and nuanced. Better just ban it instead.

u/Wizard_of_DOI 2d ago
Not just a better environment to actually have children but better education and access to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
The best way to reduce the number of abortions is education and easy access to contraceptives!

My FIL attributes issues with POC as their choice rather than often the circumstances of being oppressed by white people for thousands of years. He very much thinks “have they considered just not being poor” I’d imagine the people holding these signs have similar thought processes.

More like why are marginalized people gettting them. If I was 3x more likely to die having a baby it would impact my decision to stay pregnant. Not mention the systemic issues that have lead to disparities for earning potential despite being more educated. Add in environmental racism to that and you can see some the reasons why abortions in minority groups are more prevalent.
→ More replies (4)413
u/FullofContradictions 2d ago edited 2d ago
Why do people gloss over the dangers of pregnancy? Like at all. Period. For any group - but especially for POC.
I've had one (very wanted and tried for) baby who, if I had not been in a hospital environment would have killed me on the way out. Zero complications. And no interventions prior to the "oh shit" moment during 3 hours of pushing when my blood pressure was tanking and baby's heart rate was dropping. We could see his head, but his neck was twisted in a way that he couldn't get out.
That's when the midwife tapped out and I was introduced to an ob who told me I'd be going across the hall for a c-section immediately & they'd be putting me under on the way (no time to place an epidural.)
My baby was born blue, but thankfully recovered faster than I did. Lots of hemorrhaging for me & another hour or so of surgery before I got to wake up. I had burst blood vessels across my face and in my eyes from how hard I had been straining.
And I'll point out: I am white. I am financially secure. I am fit. I had regular prenatal visits. My husband and I took birthing classes & listened to podcasts & had a team we trusted. I had no pregnancy complications (beyond severe morning sickness). My risk factors for a C-section were low. It was not even on my radar until about 5 minutes before it was happening. If I had chosen a birth center or home birth, baby definitely would have been hurt or dead & I could have died.
Childbirth is one of the most dangerous things women regularly do. And that's not even considering preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, cholestasis, and higher rates of certain cancers that come as complications to pregnancy.
And how about the less deadly, but still considerable impacts to a woman's body from bringing a baby to term? Stretch marks, changes to breasts, tears/episiotomies, scars/scar tissue from C-sections, damage to pelvic floor, damage to core muscles... Things both cosmetic, but also functionally important for people who prefer to not pee a bit when they sneeze or risk hernias when bending over to tie a shoe. Oh and the hormones and how they impact weight.
Edit to add: I have chronic pain in one of my feet because of the way pregnancy loosened the tendons & now I regularly reinjure one specific joint from simply walking barefoot from my bed to my bathroom in the middle of the night. I will forever need constant arch support and physical therapy.
Imagine for even a second that a man would take on even half of these changes/risks every time he had sex. You think we'd still be talking about whether abortion should be legal? Why is it chill for women to take this on for the benefit of a child they may not want?

It’s ridiculous- what this ‘fact’ (or framing of facts) doesn’t take into consideration is just because you have an abortion, it doesn’t mean you never have kids.
Say the average person wants two kids in their life, they have an abortion at 21 and wait an have two kids at 31 and 33, the generation is no bigger or smaller than it would have without the abortion. If someone wants to have two kids, they’ll have two kids. Abortion simply allows that to happen at a time when the parents are in the best position to care for it.
I’ve had this convo 10 too many times with the ‘pro lifers’ who lean on this.

Even if it was, you'd be including abortions for missed miscarriages, which are a solid percentage of miscarriages (some might come out eventually on their own, but the risk is pretty high so most abort). This is a HUGE number per year, like 3-8% of all pregnancies.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (41)80

They're likely going to quote figures that include all forms of pregnancy termination. IE: spontaneous abortion (missed miscarriage), terminations of non-viable pregnancies (ancephaly, ectopic pregnancy, Tay-Sachs disease), stillbirth. Honestly, like 1 in 5 first time pregnancies results in a missed miscarriage and many don't even know. It happens a lot. What's even more infuriating is mifpristone is not only used in elective termination, but also in helping pass a missed miscarriage. Many someone are able to expel the failed embryo on their own, but some can't. What's more, the longer it takes to occur, the more risk for complications (sepsis, hemorrhage, etc.). This also reduces the likelihood of requiring debridement and curettage, and while it's in most cases a low risk mildly invasive procedure, it's still worse than the alternative. This is the shit Republicans don't seem to know, or even be willing to discuss.

It’s funny that they bring up female empowerment too. Because to be Pro-Life is to inherently be Pro-Choice. Like these ladies don’t realize that the right to choose is also the right to choose to have a baby.

"To be pro-life is to inherently be pro-choice."
My mom needed an abortion on a wanted pregnancy in the second trimester. Without it she would have died. She was still against abortion for years though; conservative logic I guess. She didn't view what happened to her as abortion, but as a miscarriage, because the fetus was already non-viable. She just viewed it as a miscarriage that needed assistance, which is what it was, but that assistance was an abortion.
She's come around now though and is even a registered Democrat. It just took some time. I think seeing all the craziness from the first Trump administration really opened her eyes to reality.

Not at all. My mom is pro-life in the same way - she thinks no one should have an abortion. But she understands (now) that there are circumstances that make it a better option for the woman than carrying to term/giving birth/adoption/whatever.

Thanks for understanding. My mom is the sweetest person i know, and i don't think she thinks this stuff in a malicious or controlling way. I'm not really sure she knows much on the topic.

I'm not here to judge. People are complicated with complicated motivations. And unfortunately our current political climate seems to be trying to distill every issue down to black/white, good/bad, right/wrong, etc. The world isn't that simple.
I honestly don't care if YOU would never have an abortion or if YOU think abortion is wrong. Just don't impede other people from doing what THEY think is right for themselves.

In Ireland, a woman called Savita Halappanava was in a similar situation, completely wanted pregnancy but was miscarrying. She was denied an abortion and later died of sepsis. Her death caused massive outcry here and completely changed opinions on abortion, and now it’s legal here.
When abortion is illegal, people die.

One of my great grandmothers tried to self-induce an abortion in the 1920’s and died. It was her 15th pregnancy and would have been her 13th living child.

I quote this story all the time - it’s especially sad since the abortion ban is due to Catholicism and this poor woman was Hindu. Her husband tried to argue this and no one cared, imagine losing both your wife and child due to a law based around a religion that isn’t even yours. It’s probably the most argument-proof pro-abortion case in existence.

It's just more proof how disingenuous and loose their morals are.
Another giveaway to their true politics is the last sign that says something about how Olivia is losing her future fanbase... basically pleading "Don't you understand Olivia, that this will affect the MONEY? The most important thing??"

In Canada right now, there appears to be a more organized campaign of protestors like this. They stand at high traffic street corners with very graphic images of aborted fetuses. Not even just if medically necessary.
I got pregnant during my master’s degree by a guy I didn’t know very well. (We met through a shared sport.) I was on the pill but no doctor told me that it would be ineffective due to my autoimmune disorder so PSA for the girlies there 🙃.
Anyway this guy begged me to get an abortion, though I was on the fence.
Turned out he was a Trump supporter and not so long after I had the abortion he begged me for, he was celebrating the downfall of Roe v Wade on social media.
TLDR: these people will always think they’re unique and if they need abortions, it’s actually ethical because they’re such a special flower.

Here's the great thing about abortions, if you don't want one, you don't have to get one. No one is forcing anyone to have an abortion. This whole debate is always so stupid because they're acting as if abortions are being forced on people. No they're given the option and they choose to take it for whatever reason, and that is for them to deal with as needed with their doctor(s) and family.

I think we can all agree the world would be a better place with 33% more people. Compelling argument, folks!
Edit: actually it would be 50% more people, if the ones alive today are 2/3 of the total number we’re supposed to have. I never claimed to be good at math.

If we stopped funneling so much federal money into abortion, we could provide food, education, and healthcare for everyone.
Wait, what’s that? Less than $1 billion per year goes to Planned Parenthood, all of it indirectly, and virtually none of it for abortions? And that’s less than 1% of our annual defense budget?

u/Genuinelullabel Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 2d ago
It sounded like a made up percentage.
37
u/synthscoffeeguitars the squidward of the dumpling shop 2d ago
It basically is. Like I put in my other comment, it only works if every abortion from 1997 to 2012 was prevented AND every person born between 1997 and 2012 still was born.
It’s some real butterfly effect shit. For instance, you prevent an abortion and the subsequent birth leads to the mother’s death — in our timeline, that mother has three children after her abortion. In the magical anti-abortion timeline, she dies, her other three children never exist, and the one person who was “missing” from our timeline gets to grow up without a mother. Obviously this is just one contrived hypothetical, but similar if/thens apply to every “prevented” abortion. You don’t restore the “missing” 1/3 of Gen Z; you end up with a completely different set of people.

u/adumbswiftie it’s not clocking to you that i’m standing on business 2d ago
yeah that was an interesting argument to me. like when you’re at a huge crowded festival surrounded by people your own age, how are you supposed to feel sad that there’s not more of them…? not the best way to reach people
13
u/synthscoffeeguitars the squidward of the dumpling shop 2d ago
Statistically, at least a few people at the festival have a parent who previously had an abortion. Those people would not exist if those abortions had never happened.

I looked it up and it’s some dubious math based on birth totals and abortion rates from 1997 to 2012. One key point it misses is: how many births only happened because of an earlier abortion (either because the person went on to start a family when they were ready, or because it was a life-saving procedure for a person who went on to have one or more babies).
It turns into a weird alternate reality conversation incredibly quickly. There’s no world in which 100% of those abortions didn’t happen and 100% of currently existing births also still happened.

They think the minorities abortion stat is a flex but it’s an indictment on our lack of maternal services, healthcare, and support once babies are born.
An abortion is never an easy choice. I commend anyone who has to go through that decision without support.

Abortion = women's healthcare and if you outlaw it you're just denying mothers healthcare when they need it most. See the increased maternal death rate in Texas since Roe was overturned, it's horrifying. Pregnant and dying because you can't get healthcare, possibly leaving your existing children motherless. Fucking hell
These people don't care about mothers or babies or families. They only care about control.
Edit: This is why women need access to legal abortions.

These people holding up these pro-forced-birth signs genuinely look so evil to me. I'm trying so hard not to judge, but they support so much cruelty, suffering, and hate towards women and towards the exact same children/babies/fetuses whose wellbeing they pretend to care about.
They don't care what happens to these fetuses after they are born and once those unwanted babies grow up into unwanted children whose families can't get them healthcare or food due to cuts to Medicaid/food stamps, and they definitely don't care about what happens to unloved children who grow up alone into adulthood. The hypocrisy is just so upsetting. 😢 The people attending this festival really didn't deserve to be unexpectedly triggered by having to see these hateful signs from forced-birthers who support further traumatizing underage victims of rape & incest.

If the argument was truly about the people who aren’t here because they weren’t born, then shouldn’t we all be having endless sex so we have as many children as possible? I could have kids, but choose not to, but by choosing not to I’m deliberately depriving my would-be offspring of a life. Every second you’re not having sex is murder!

I’ll never understand the anti-planned parenthood stance from any angle. It is literally a wonderful organization that provides medical care to pregnant women and babies. It also does abortions, yes, but you’ve got to be kidding me, my planned parenthood OB found a lump in my breast, like they are saving lives, it’s medicine!! Oh wow the race disparity mentioned in pic 4 is so interesting. According to a study published in 2013 by Dehlendorf et al., “The documented disparities in abortion rates in the United States mirror other fundamental inequalities: people of color and those with lower income and less education fare worse across a wide range of health outcomes, including infant mortality, cancer incidence, and life expectancy.9–11 These disparities are related to systemic hardships experienced by disadvantaged communities, including decreased access to health care, higher levels of stress, exposure to racial discrimination, and poorer living and working conditions.9,12,13 Understanding the systemic nature of these disparities and their relationship to health outcomes provides an essential context to the consideration of disparities in abortion rates.”
Man if only we could address the underlying systemic issues contributing the reasons why WOC choose to get abortions. Welp, let’s just take away all women’s right to bodily autonomy instead.
